Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

I started Modem Mischief because I've always had a deep fascination with cybercrime and computer hacking. I often joke that, if I was smarter, I'd be hacking computers instead of producing a podcast about hacking. I also think there's a deep ethical debate about hacking that needs to be had. Also, I love taking complex information and turning it into a fast moving narrative that anyone can understand and appreciate.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

I hope listeners will understand that there is much more to the Internet than just social media. There's a deep web of people doing important work in cybersecurity and just as many bad actors out there.

Which episode should someone start with?

I still love our first two episodes on The Silk Road. We don't do multi-part series often but, when we do, we swing for the fences.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

My Top 5 Favorite Modem Mischief Episodes: 1. Episode 1 & 2 - Rise & Fall of the Silk Road - The insane story of Ross Ulbricht 2. Episode 12 - The 414's - The story of a few teenagers in the 1980's who got in deep trouble when they hacked the Los Alamos nuclear facility. 3. Episode 7 - Gary McKinnon - The man who hacked NASA and uncovered some crazy stuff. 4. Episode 34 - Titan Rain - Part one of our four part series on Chinese state hacking. 5. Episode 25 - Julian Assange - Part 1 of 4.

Which episode are you most proud of?

Episode 4 about Edward Snowden is one of my favorites. Back then I also used to edit and co-write the show and that one was a labor of love. Like our early shows, it took many drafts to get it right. When we did, we knew it.

What is your vision for your show?

Modem Mischief is a dark, immersive show about cybercrime. Our focus is on the story, allowing the listener to be a fly on the wall rather than regurgitating technical jargon that only a few can understand.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

Disgraceland. I love the way that show is produced and Jake Brennan gives A+ narration.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

I played around with the name for a long time before I finally got it. I had two other names which I also had art drawn up for but it was never right. Modem Mischief came to me in a dream and I knew that was it. I'm also a sucker for alliteration.

Tell us a bit about yourself

By day I run the BloodStream Media podcast network which is the largest rare disease podcast network in the world. I also produce and oversee Marc Summers Unwraps which is a celebrity interview show. I podcast by day and also by night!
