Searching for that parenthood balance so when our kids are old they look back and say, "yeah, my dad (or mom) was awesome," however we get there. And while we love our kids unconditionally, that doesn't mean we're wimpy pushover dads who have lost every shred of dignity and respect in the home. Let's find that balance together. We are Max Valverde and Matt Naylor. We are MILKLESS.

Max and Matt get honest about parenting on autopilot—when you're technically doing everything right but feel totally disconnected from your kids. They unpack the invisible exhaustion that builds up from work, stress, and just keeping the family machine running—and how easy it is to slip into a mode where you're reacting, not connecting. They talk about how small moments of presence (like a 15-second eye gaze!) can rewire your entire day, why we confuse doing "enough" with actually showing up, and how a toddler’s sheep-scented toot became the emotional reset one dad didn’t know he needed. They also get into parenting guilt, meditation, sibling rivalry, and how sometimes the biggest shift is the smallest gesture. Let’s gooo!

Max and Matt sit down with guest Bettina Schultz-Jobe to explore one of the hottest parenting questions out there: What should school actually look like? They dive into homeschooling, hybrid models, micro-schools, and the wild world of education alternatives beyond the standard public school path. Bettina shares her journey from therapist to school founder, what she’s learned about how kids learn best, and why some traditional school settings might be killing our kids’ natural love for learning. From balancing structure with freedom to the challenge of building real social-emotional skills, they talk about how different environments shape kids—not just academically, but as full humans. They also tackle hard questions about socialization, bullying, screen time, and the myth that there’s one “right” way to educate your kid. Let’s gooo!

Just a little somethin' between seasons 2 & 3 of the show. Matt tells a story about his daughter, and about the man who told him - long before Matt had kids - that being a father is "the best thing you'll ever do."

#45 This is 40
MILKLESS
04/04/24 • 33 min
Holy sh*t, The Boys are turning forty. This one's literally coming out on Max's 40th birthday. Is it just a number, or an opportunity to look at life in a whole new way? Maybe both? Maybe neither? Maybe it's what you make of it. But all the research shows that having a positive perspective on getting older makes the back half of your life a whole lot better (not to mention healthier and longer). So, how do we get there, in spite of the aching joints and inevitable humbling that life deals out? Matt and Max dive in, looking for ways to embrace what's coming whether we like it or not. Also, they talk about death for a while, cause that's always a crowd-pleaser (apologies in advance). But it's one of our favorite episodes already. Let's do it!

Look, Frozen is great! Bluey is unbelievable! Paw Patrol is... an incredibly lucrative business. But by the 11th viewing, they are all the worst thing you've ever seen - and mostly your kid ends up watching them alone while you zone out on your phone. Max and Matt are diving into an alternate take on screen time with your kids - one filled with great films, dope music videos, and sketch comedy that's just as funny to you as it is to a five year old. With a little research (and some time on Common Sense Media), this can be a truly shared experience - instead of a way to kill an afternoon. So, grab some popcorn and settle in. Tonight we're gonna watch something GOOD.

#93 The Work Trip
MILKLESS
02/18/25 • 22 min
Max and Matt dive deep into the emotional complexities of work trips — how they feel before, during, and after leaving their families behind. The lead-up is filled with guilt and anxiety, and while the trip itself might offer a bit of relief, there’s no escaping the emotional rollercoaster of being away from the kids and the tension with partners. From the chaotic reentry period to the guilt of missing milestones, they talk through how to manage these feelings of guilt while balancing their roles as dads and professionals. They also discuss the dynamics with their partners and kids, the expectations that come with travel, and why sometimes, the family routine takes a little detour when dad's away. Max and Matt explore the mixed emotions of being away — the pangs of leaving your partner with the kids, the inevitable "tantrums" when you come back, and how these trips impact family life and the overall family dynamic. Let's gooo!

There's no denying it: everybody is worse at everything when they're tired. And that may be more true of parenting than pretty much anything else. We're less patient, less fun, and quicker to snap at our kids when we're gassed. We all know it, and yet a large percentage of us consistently self-sabotage by staying up later than we should. Whether it's doom scrolling in bed, vegging on the couch watching TV, or worst of all: doing both at the same time, the phenomenon of "revenge bedtime procrastination" is widespread and growing. There has been a good deal of recent research into the topic, and Matt and Max are going to dig into it. They'll also speak quite a bit from personal experience - which, unfortunately, they've got a lot of. These two night owls share humiliating stories of self-inflicted sleep deprivation, trade strategies for avoiding those own-goals, and try to figure out why they just can't make themselves let go of the day. This may feel like a strange topic for an entire episode. But if you're chronically underslept, getting even one more hour a night could give you a bigger quality of life bump than just about anything else you could do. So, if you’re bingeing this episode at 2:30am... go the F to sleep and listen tomorrow morning! Otherwise, pour yourself a coffee (early in the day) and buckle up. It’s a fun one. Let’s go!

#83 Lost Boys
MILKLESS
11/01/24 • 52 min
We're diving into the sticky topic of boys today. We tackle the often-overlooked struggles boys face in today’s world, inspired partly by Richard Reeves from the Brookings Institution (youtube link below). While we wholeheartedly celebrate the progress made for girls and women—a movement that is crucial and long overdue—we also need to shine a light on the alarming new statistics regarding boys: declining college graduation rates, slipping school performance, and the fact that 4 out of 5 suicides are male. What does modern masculinity look like? Is there still a place for masculinity in our modern society? And how do we define it when so much of historical masculinity needs to evolve or be left behind?
This topic is undeniably sticky. It can feel like supporting boys somehow detracts from empowering our daughters, but we’re here to set the record straight: lifting up one group doesn’t mean leaving another behind. We can—and must—do both!
As we explore these complex issues, we’re excited to announce that today, November 1, coincides with the kickoff of Movember! Max is diving into the spirit of the month by growing his first mustache to raise funds for men’s health issues. Join us in making a difference: you can donate to Max's Movember campaign below or be a part of the inaugural Milkless Mo team to help raise awareness and funds.
