When I worked with the sustainability team of a large manufacturer, I encountered a massive challenge that is widespread across many industries. Manufacturers, for example, of electrical and electronic products, rely on countless pre-manufactured parts—steel bolts, aluminum casings, electronic boards, and chips, all these essential components. Yet, the CO2 data for many parts was incomplete or simply unavailable. Doch die CO2-Daten für viele Teile waren unvollständig oder schlichtweg nicht verfügbar. Anstatt präzise Berechnungen durchzuführen, mussten Unternehmen auf grobe Schätzungen zurückgreifen, indem sie versuchten, die Kosten eines Teils in seinen CO2-Ausstoß umzurechnen. Um echten Fortschritt bei der Dekarbonisierung zu erzielen brauchen wir zuverlässige Daten für jedes Teil und jeden Lieferanten.

Im Kern dieses Problems steht die Herausforderung des Reifegrads und des Vertrauens. Unternehmen stehen heute unter immensem Druck, ihre Emissionen zu reduzieren, insbesondere in ihren Lieferketten. Aber diese Emissionen können nicht direkt von den Lieferanten selbst reduziert werden. Die Lieferanten müssen Änderungen in ihren Verfahren und Lieferketten vornehmen, und das erfordert Investitionen. Vertrauen ist gegenseitig — die Lieferanten müssen darauf vertrauen, dass der Hersteller ihre emissionsarmen, verbesserten Teile kauft, und die Hersteller müssen den Emissions-Daten vertrauen, die sie von den Lieferanten erhalten.
