In today’s podcast, you’ll hear a very special interview from our 2019 online summit with Dr. Neal Barnard.

In this episode, you’ll hear him speak about the connection between the foods you eat and your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Barnard has written an authoritative book on the topic of cheese. So we asked him why it’s so addicting and why cheese is so bad for your health.

He gave us some insight into the connection between casein from cow’s milk and type 1 diabetes

Dr. Barnard and his team at PCRM conduct a lot of scientific research that’s published in top journals. In this interview, we asked about his research findings and the underlying cause of insulin resistance based on his experience.

And of course, we talked all about ketogenic diets, including the plant-based version of a ketogenic diet.

There is a lot of gold in this interview so make sure to listen all the way to the end.

Before we get started, I’m quite excited to announce our 2021 summit.

So Cyrus and I have been running Mastering Diabetes summits since 2017. It’s a highlight of our year getting to bring together the world’s top experts in so many disciplines for one jam-packed event.

Today we are excited to be joined by Dr. Vivian Chen.

Dr. Chen has 14 years of experience as a doctor in the UK. She trained in internal medicine and dermatology in London before moving into Family Practice.

Today’s show is a bit different than many of our others because our conversation with Dr. Vivian Chen focuses on food, but also on specific environmental contaminants that can increase your risk for insulin resistance as well as other metabolic diseases.

It’s true that excess saturated fat is one of the most potent and reliable triggers of insulin resistance, as many published studies have shown

But beyond the saturated fat equation, there are many other aspects of daily life that can increase your risk for IR, including:

    • Weight gain
    • A sedentary lifestyle
    • Overconsumption of calories
    • Living in a high stress environment
    • A suppressed immune system, and
    • Excess alcohol intake (to name a few)

In today’s show, we’ll talk with Dr. Vivian Chen about the role that chemicals in your environment play in “disrupting” your endocrine health

We’ll talk about animal foods, tupperware, plastic bags, receipts, packaged food products, plastic water bottles, flame retardants, fish, and much much more

You can learn more about Dr. Vivian Chen by visiting her website at www.platefulhealth.com or stalking her on Instagram at plateful.health

Mastering Diabetes Audio Experience - The Hidden Heart Disease Risk Factor Few are Talking About with Joel Kahn – E111
play

03/09/21 • 37 min

We are excited to be joined by Dr. Joel Kahn.

Dr. Kahn is a cardiologist and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a Summa Cum Laude graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School.

He’s known as “America’s Holistic Heart Doc,” and has authored many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He writes articles for MindBodyGreen, Thrive Global, and Reader’s Digest and has five books in publication including The Whole Heart Solution, Dead Execs Don’t Get Bonuses as well as The Plant-Based Solution.

He has regular appearances on Dr. Phil, The Doctors, and Fox 2 News. He also recently debated with Chris Kresser about the evidence in support of plant-based diets on the Joe Rogan Experience and has been featured with Larry King Live in a recent special about heart health.

He also owns 2 health restaurants in Detroit and a food truck in Austin, Texas. How he accomplishes all of this is a complete mystery to us, but suffice it to say that Dr. Kahn is a MACHINE, he’s our favorite stand-up comedian, and we’re honored to call him a friend.

In this episode of the Mastering Diabetes Audio Experience, we’ll cover:

  • An article he recently wrote in which he referred to low-carbohydrate diets as “high-coffin” diets, because there is ample scientific evidence that low-carbohydrate diets actually increase your risk for premature death.
  • Why, despite this, many health professionals teach people to INCREASE their intake of meat, cheese, fish, eggs, and vegetable oil, claiming that it’s the best way to “reverse” type 2 diabetes specifically because they are low in carbohydrate energy.
  • What benefits would someone gain from becoming a plant-based low-carbohydrate eater?
  • What are the exact benefits of short-term ketosis referenced by Dr. Valter Longo and how do those benefits change over time?
  • What happens to blood lipids and specifically LDL cholesterol following a plant-based low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet?
  • What happens to diabetes risk and blood glucose control following a plant-based low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet?
  • If there was ONE THING you could say to teach people the truth about nutrition to clear up the confusion that the Internet promotes, what would it be?

You can find Dr. Joel Khan on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drjkahn/

And on his website: https://www.drjoelkahn.com/

Our improvement in insulin sensitivity has decreased or risk for developing common chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and kidney disease. Additionally, living in an insulin-sensitive state allows us to control our blood glucose with precision and live active, joyful lives!

We address all this and much, more in our brand new book titled Mastering Diabetes. I could not be more excited to announce to you all that the book hit #6 on the New York Times Bestseller list and is also a USA Today, Publishers Weekly and Audible bestseller!

We worked on this book for over 2 years. It’s a true masterpiece and we are just incredibly proud of it. We tell our personal stories in great detail, we cover the science of insulin resistance in a way that is easy to understand yet incredibly thorough. There are over 800+ citations, 30 recipes, two 21-day meals and so much more. It’s a true road map for maximizing your insulin sensitivity. The hardcover can be purchases anywhere books are sold. The digital version can be found on Kindle, Apple Books Nook and other digital readers. We also read our own audiobook which is available on Audible, Google Play and anywhere audiobooks can be purchased. We also added bonus material before each chapter in our audiobook which was really fun.

  • What foods promote optimal microbiome health?
  • What are short chain fatty acids? What do they do, where are they made, what tissues do they affect?
  • What foods increase intestinal permeability?
  • Why are bacterial endotoxins? Where do they come from? How do they affect the lining of your large intestine? What negative effects do they create?
  • How does the microbiome affect diabetes health? Type 1 diabetes? Blood glucose control? Insulin secretion?
  • How fiber helps with gut function? How does fiber affect BG control?

We have a gem for you today! We sat down with Dr. Jim Loomis who is one of the most knowledgeable doctors we’ve ever met and he was actually our medical director at our last in-person retreat in Costa Rica.

We had him booked and ready to go for our next retreat in Costa Rica, but that has been postponed. So we have created a virtual retreat!

Canceling was disappointing, but we’ve take this opportunity to create a better and more affordable immersive experience!

We have three different pricing options and a ton of bonuses. The whole thing is super exciting.

Making changes in your home environment is going to be a game changer. Simply go to masteringdiabets.org/retreats to learn more.

Now before we get into the interview, we want to let you know what you'll learn.

Why are people so confused about fructose?

Is fructose dangerous?

Does it contribute to type 2 diabetes?

Does it contribute to other diseases?

What is the difference between refined and non refined fructose?

We hope you all learn a lot and enjoy this episode. If you think others should learn this information, make sure to share a screenshot on your Instagram story and tag us (@masteringdiabetes)!
