In this episode I focus in on an issue I’ve been discussing with clients recently – testimonials. I cover:

  • Why service business owners really need testimonials
  • How to get over the icky feeling!
  • How to ask for them

Marketing For Introverts - 36. What’s working on social media right now with Gus Bhandal
play

06/20/22 • 33 min

Gus Bhandal is a social media manager and trainer, and an introvert who has found a way to stand out through creating a very specific online personal brand. While he works across many platforms for his clients, for his own business he focusses on long form content.

Gus is a big advocate of using social media content to build the “know, like and trust” factor. We talked a lot about the changes on LinkedIn and why we are all showing more personality in our posts. We discussed the need for virtual water cooler moments and how to decide which bits of your personal life to share and what to keep private.

We had a great chat about how he uses social media, where he draws the boundaries and who he’s inspired by on social media right now. I hope you enjoy this episode!

Book recommendations

Gus recommended 3 of his favourite marketing books:

Marketing For Introverts - 37. Help! What do I do when my marketing isn’t working?
play

07/04/22 • 16 min

In this episode I answer a call for help! This is a conversation I have sometimes when I first talk to new clients. It’s rarely about a crisis, it’s not that everything is falling to pieces but they often have a feeling that it’s all a bit bleugh, and they need to fix it – but they honestly aren’t quite sure of the problem so they aren’t exactly sure how.

This is the episode you need when you are feeling a bit fed up that you don’t seem to be getting any results, that things aren’t working, or you aren’t making an impact. Maybe you feel you are doing all the marketing things and you just can’t see the difference it makes.

I’m going to ask you 4 questions to help you get back on track. Take a listen and let me know what answers it brings up for you.

Marketing For Introverts - 38. Mindset for Introverts with Emma-Louise Parkes
play

07/18/22 • 29 min

Emma-Louise is an online business coach and strategist and host of The Ambitious Introvert podcast. After a successful career as long-haul cabin crew and as an air traffic controller she trained as a coach and set up her business just before lockdown. She now helps ambitious introverts create the strategy and mindset for massive success. Emma-Louise defines mindset as “the thoughts we have and how they serve us” so I was very keen to talk to her about the mindset challenges that introverts face around visibility.

We discussed the point that as introverts we don’t feel compelled to share every aspect of our lives and also we don’t need the external validation – so getting more visible on social media, for example, can feel very “show offy!” We can also be very self-critical about how we look or sound, so if content is less than perfect we don’t always want to share it. And how many of us worry that our former colleagues will see our content and judge us harshly?

Emma-Louise shared some ways to think about visibility to help us take the steps we need to market our business, as well as some practical tips. She shared the power of accountability in her journey to get more visible and emphasised the need to take action, even if it is small steps to grow our comfort zone a little bit every day.

Resources and books

She shared her reading list, all recommended to her by her podcast guests, which you can find here: https://www.emmalouiseparkes.com/readinglist

She particularly recommended:

Billion Dollar Loser by Reeves Wiedeman

play

I’m talking in this new series about visibility – what it is, why it’s important and how to do it in a way that feels comfortable and even fun.

In this episode I talked to Rachel Extance, a former journalist turned copywriter and content marketing strategist. We talked about why creating your own regular content as a business owner is a great strategy for visibility, particularly if you are in a highly competitive industry. She suggested the best way to get started and gave some great advice about regular blogging. She also revealed herself as a fan of Schitts Creek and Miss Marple – and why it helps to share that content even if it’s nothing to do with your business!

I took a brave step and handed over the interviewer’s seat for this episode to my good friend Wendy Harris, so she could ask me about my 25 years in PR and marketing!

We talked about how the industry has changed massively, but how actually we are all still trying to achieve the same things we were in the 1990s. I revealed my favourite job of the last 25 years, why I love a client with a real purpose and why I never want to do a full-time job again.

I also shared how I first knew I was an introvert and how a complete moment of self-doubt led me to want to create marketing for introverts. And if you are feeling swamped by all the bright and shiny marketing tactics, listen to my top tip for marketing as an introvert.

This week I’m re-sharing a conversation with you that I had in March 2020, with video expert Danielle Bayes of Videos Undifficulted.

Live video is the perfect way to talk to your ideal clients, and most social media platforms have a way to do this. It shows the person who runs the business (people buy from people remember!) and it’s a great way of answering questions your clients have, or showing what goes on behind the scenes.

But, hands up who is scared of doing live videos? Danielle is keen to help us overcome our fears and this episode is full of tips to encourage us to get started with live video.

Marketing For Introverts - 30. Email marketing with Natalie Rockall
play

02/28/22 • 38 min

Before I invited her on the podcast, Natalie hadn’t really considered that she was an introvert. However our conversation helped her realise that her preferred solo work style and her love of noise cancelling headphones indicate her introvert tendencies!

Natalie outlined the benefits of email marketing, from its ease in getting started, to the impressive return on investment and the range of free tools that help you send professional email marketing campaigns.

We talked about good ways to build a mailing list, from pop ups and QR codes to adding new clients and inviting personal connections. We also talked about the value exchange, offering valuable information such as a digital download in return for asking for an email address.

Finally we covered the essentials of GDPR and where to go if you need more advice.

Books

Natalie recommended two books:

GDPR for Dummies by Suzanne Dibble

Eat that Frog Get More of the Important Things Done Today by Brian Tracy
