play

05/28/21 • 194 min

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum finally get around to dedicating a whole episode of the podcast to Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer, otherwise known as the highest selling manga title of last year! And of course, who better to have on to discuss this momentous series then our friends from the Demon Slayer Podcast (Vlord, Marion & Sakaki)! Demon Slayer is a series that was just too big for the Mavericks crew to ignore, not just because we've constantly been covering its rise to fame, but also because we covered the first few chapters when they initially premiered as apart of Shonen Jump's Jump Start initiative all the way back in 2016 on our third episode of the podcast! We discuss just why its become so popular and how the story's poignant themes and messages have managed to capture the hearts of readers around the world and especially Japan, as well as our feelings on the final arc of the series and how much of an exciting and emotional roller coaster it was despite a few criticisms of certain story beats here and there! Join us as we finally slay (talk about) possibly one of the biggest demons (series) we've ever covered!! Enjoy! Manga Mavericks - Manga Mavericks EP. 139: "Our Dreams at Dusk"
play

11/08/20 • 102 min

Our Dreams at Dusk is a beautiful manga that explores characters across the LGBTQ+ spectrum in different phases of their life, struggling to be accepted for being themselves, and finding a community and support network in one another. It made waves when Seven Seas released it in English last year, and after reading it we knew we had to talk about it on the show! We’ve also brought on a very special guest to discuss the series with us - Jocelyne Allen, translator of Our Dreams at Dusk and so many other amazing manga! Jocelyne shares her insights on the series as its translator, shedding some light on some pivotal scenes and language used in the story. She also discusses her career history in translation, including her early career as a translator for Honda, differences between translating novels and manga, her experiences interpreting, and so much more! We had a delightful conversation with Jocelyne, discussing everything that makes this manga such a dream come true for queer manga fans of all ages! But our dream doesn’t end with this podcast! Throughout this month we’ll be releasing podcasts about different LGBTQ manga in a loose theme month we’re calling LGBThanksgiving! Look forward to more interviews with translators and creators and discussions of beloved series about love in the coming weeks! Manga Mavericks - Manga Mavericks @ Movies #16: Blade Runner 2049
play

05/15/18 • 82 min

Manga Mavericks @ Movies month continues as the Mavericks discuss two 2017 films with the word "blade" in their title: Blade Runner 2049 and Blade of the Immortal! But that is not their only connection; both films feature acclaimed directors using their distinctive styles to bring a fresh take to a beloved story. Is Denis Villeneuve's exploration of how to define humanity as artificial intelligence increasingly resembles genuine consciousness superior to Ridley Scott's original take? Beneath its bloody chambara stylings, does Takeshi Miike's adaptation of Hiroaki Samura's manga cut to the heart of its meditation on the futile cycle of revenge and the moral paradox of taking a life to protect another? The Mavericks discuss how these films reflect upon the themes of their original work and expand on them to communicate new ideas - their ideas - through them! It's finally time to dig up and release those dozen reviews we recorded over the summer I never got around to releasing! Since The Ancient Magus's Bride anime has finally premiered on Crunchyroll, it seemed high time to post our thoughts on the first three episodes of the series, which we watched back in July thanks to Crunchyroll's Anime Movie Night. Was The Ancient Magus's Bride as enchanting as its reputation suggests? It won't take you long to find out! That isn't the only review on this episode though! We also share our thoughts on Takeshi Koike's badass new Lupin III flick The Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa. This is one of the rare Lupin III features to focus on the theif's iconic samurai sidekick, but was the movie really about him? We discuss the pros and cons of the film as well as what we'd like to see from the Lupin III Koike-verse in the future! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:00 - Intro 1:39 - The Ancient Magus’s Bride 16:20 - Children of Ether 19:47 - Theater Experiences 27:52 - Lupin III: The Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa 47:28 - Wrap-Up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube. I think our guest is a translator! Oh, who am I kidding? You already know he is! Leo McDonagh is a multimedia translator who's worked on innumerable projects, including two incredible standout queer manga, Okura’s heartwarming I Think Our Son is Gay and Keito Gaku’s empowering Boys Run the Riot! It’s a rare occasion that two remarkable and resonant queer manga such as these both come out within weeks of each other, much less sharing the same translator, and we really wanted to celebrate the occasion by spotlighting these works and getting Leo’s intimate insights on them! Leo shares his career journey as a translator, and his perspective on both series as their translator and as a gay transman who can appreciate and relate with both series in different ways. We talk in-depth about how both works explore and speak to real-world struggles queer youth face with optimism and encouragement, defying heteronormative social structures with community and validation, and how resonant and important these messages are for young queer readers and are so cathartic to older queer readers who can relate with these experiences. There’s a lot to love about these series, and we had a wonderful time discussing them with Leo. There's no shame in our game, it’s a riot!
