We know it’s important to be ourselves, but for many of us, it’s complicated. On this week’s episode of Love Space, we joined Mycall Akeem Riley to talk all things queerness, gender, style, safety, intersectionality, and self-expression. We covered:

  • Mycall’s experience growing up as a queer Black person in the Minneapolis suburbs;
  • How we can learn to trust ourselves, even when society seems to tell us we shouldn’t;
  • Getting clear and intentional about what we need, and setting boundaries about the people and places we choose;
  • Dismantling hegemonic structures;
  • Intersectionality, privilege, and the nuances of all of our various identities and experiences;
  • Visibility, representation, and safety;
  • “Possibility models” who can inspire new forms of expression and how we carry ourselves;
  • Style, self-expression, and feeling powerful;
  • Why it’s time to stop commenting on people’s bodies, and let people live;
  • Mycall’s hopes for the future... and more.

Mycall Akeem Riley is a liberatory inclined educator and style consultant based in Chicago, Illinois. Currently serving as the inaugural LGBTQIA+ Resource Center Coordinator for DePaul University, Mycall works to uplift and support those who hold marginalized genders or sexualities. Mycall also is an adjunct faculty in the LGBT Studies minor program. The interplay of gender identity, sexuality, and Blackness continues to be a major focus in his work. Outside of the academy, Mycall works to continue to uplift marginalized communities rather than consulting or creating. A major focus has been the Blaq Agenda Project, a multiform project highlighting Black Queer experiences. Mycall can find joy in thrift shopping, conversations on taboo topics, artfully curated playlist, and striving for a re-imagined world. Join us as we examine the (not-so-radical) notion that if we plan less, and live more freely in the present moment, our lives will unfold in the most beautiful ways -- without the need to force specific outcomes. We explored:

  • the frequency of human emotions, also known as the "map of consciousness" - and the work of Dr. David Hawkins
  • how you can manifest anything you truly desire for your life,
  • the energetics of this post-internet era, and how things continue to change more rapidly than ever,
  • loving yourself exactly where you are,
  • how you can experience more peace and acceptance, and where to begin...

With a background in psychology, a master's in creative and experiential arts therapy and trained as a psychedelic-assisted therapist, Australian-born Avá-Joy Sloan self-describes as a meditation teacher with a passion for dancing and poetry.

In 2017, Avá founded Laprana– an integrative, experiential companioning practice supporting individuals in opening into the infinite present moment, to discover for themselves, the sacredness of all of life. With a home base in Melbourne Australia, Avá is currently living a nomadic life, companioning individuals around the world to connect to the present moment through the innate medicine of the natural world in combination with contemplative, creative, and experiential forms of self-inquiry.

Avá sees a future where exploration into the depths of one's own being is the norm, taught and understood from an early age. Until then, Ava plans to continue companioning individuals to fearlessly break beyond self & societally imposed illusions and limitations of mind to find a greater sense of purpose, joy and lasting inner peace.

You can read Ava's poetry, find her latest offerings and connect with her for 1:1 online sessions via her website www.laprana.com.au.

Emily Blackwell joins Aryn for a heartfelt conversation about the power of being ourselves--so fully--in all of our humanity...embracing the full range of emotion--the good, the bad, and the ugly.
What would it feel like to truly express the fullest, truest version of yourself? Or more importantly, how much harm are we causing ourselves when we deny and stuff down our true feelings?
When we authentically express ourselves, and welcome in our shadow, our hurt, our anger-- we can more fully accept others, and live more authentically. We covered:

  • What life looked like before Emily found yoga
  • The modern phenomenon of email apnea
  • Pleasure and pain as portals
  • Breath awareness and our nervous system
  • Why we love a big SIGH
  • Unlearning the habit of silencing ourselves
  • The cathartic power of sound and movement
  • Tantric wisdom, and how our divinity lies in our humanity
  • "Sacred Rage" and letting it all out

To help us integrate this conversation (at 35:00) Emily guides us in a beautiful visualization meditation to close our conversation.

Emily Blackwell is an International E-RYT 500-hour Yoga and Meditation Teacher, Educator, Mentor, and Breathwork Facilitator based in Chicago. Her mission is to use her classes to educate others on how to integrate somatic tools, breath awareness, and the wisdom of Yogic and Tantrik philosophies to realize and embody the power that lies within.

Through her workshops, membership, classes, and adventurous retreats, Emily creates a space where participants can come and uncover their own ability to cultivate true inner peace and unconditional self-love.
