SPECIAL: To Punch Or Not To Punch a Nazi?: Chad Mummert
Losing Our Religion
08/16/17 • 83 min
Due to the tragic and violent events taking place in Charlottesville Virginia this past weekend. We are taking a break from our regularly scheduled programming to address a conversation around hate, dealing with it, and growing past it.
We all are expressing our anger, grief, pain, remorse, and disappointment differently. It's important to feel those emotions. Expression of our emotions is extremely healthy for us all. But how should we express our distaste for the beliefs of others and our disgust with hate, indifference, white supremacy, the KKK, and Nazi's?
Is violence the answer? Is punching a Nazi justified? Is it helpful? Some would say yes. Some would say it doesn’t matter. Some would say no.
This is a conversation condemning hate, white supremacy, Nazism, and the KKK, all the while asking ourselves, how should we suppress hate and defend human rights?

EPISODE 036: Hyperdrive Jew: Grace Strachman
Losing Our Religion
03/30/16 • 77 min
This is a pun-filled joy ride of laughter and conversation about how we grew up in Jewish and Christian religious homes. Our first Losing Our Religion episode with Tequila, well, mezcal. In cocktail form of course, since we were recording at the posh Hotel Vintage in downtown Portland Oregon. The cocktail was called Up In Smoke, and we had the best time.
My wife Jen joins us again in this episode and uses her Peanut Gallery powers to draw us back into more important things rather than our happy rabbit trails. Grace's story of being Jewish but not Jewish enough to be accepted by some Jews is a story relatable to many of us.
We spend some time trying to talk out what we're going to do when each of us has kids. Cause both our parents made us go to the church building and synagog, and we learned some great life lessons there.
Grace and I share an affection for Daniel Johnston, so we highlight some of his work in this episode. As well as Slayer, which is hilarious to me that Grace likes Slayer.
We finish this episode hoping to do a part 2, but I got swamped with work and Grace moved to Chicago before we could make it happen. We will have to set up another time to have Grace on the show again to talk about the different Messiah's of Judaism and Christianity.
True Love Will Find You In The End By Daniel Johnston
True love will find you in the endYou'll find out just who was your friendDon't be sad, I know you will,But don't give up untilTrue love will find you in the endThis is a promise with a catchOnly if you're looking can it find you'Cause true love is searching tooBut how can it recognize youUnless you step out into the light?Don't be sad I know you willBut don't give up untilTrue love finds you in the end.

THINKING THURSDAY: The Satanic Temple Has the Moral High Ground: Zac Gandara
Losing Our Religion
12/06/18 • 17 min
Thinking Thursday’s are about critically thinking, breaking out of boxes, and discussing new ways we can live this life together.
Living a life of inclusivity means we have to consistently get outside of our comfort zones to engage the stories, lives, and ideologies of others. How do we get over the fear of doing this? How do we engage others we don't understand. When we do, we will often we will find that their view is more beautiful than ours.

EPISODE 048: Religious Deconversion: Part One: Lori Fazzino, M.A.
Losing Our Religion
06/22/16 • 64 min
Lori Fazzino M.A. is a Ph.D. Candidate and Graduate Instructor with the Department of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Lori and I have church past together. Meeting in the megachurch fresh out of high school, in different ways, we pursued the hype within the machine together, and now both find solace outside of religion.
Her studies and research are fascinating. This will be a pair of episodes that will encourage those leaving religion and fascinate those in or outside of it. Lori is an agnostic but takes the time to explain why she has taken on a more atheist identity. She feels strongly about being a humanist, in which I too am finding great joy.
Lori has an amazing story of being kicked out the church, and now a present and future as a college professor and soon to be Ph.D. in Evangelical Deconversion. She currently teaches Sociology of Religion at UNLV.
WE TALK ABOUT:- Our Common experience in the same mega-church and interaction with Casey & Wendy Treat at Christian Faith Center.
- Lori’s conversion story through a mega-church, Covenant Celebration Church, Champions Centre in Tacoma, WA.
- Losing Religion.
- Her labeling me a “none” as far as my religious beliefs go.
- Her doctoral dissertation on the atheist community of Las Vegas. How atheists navigate Las Vegas and the tension she found between religious and non-religious communities.
- The commonality between the religious community and atheist community.
- What is truth?
- Why many unbelievers stay in religion.

Losing Our Religion

Thinking Thursday’s are about critically thinking, breaking out of boxes, and discussing new ways we could live this life together.
When we leave a religion, tribe, or team are we really growing and changing or are we just jumping into another? Call out culture, politics, our need to be better than others, and scapegoating, heaping all the negative onto others, so we don't have to look at ourselves.
