Episode 33 - 'Hunky Dory' by David Bowie (1971)
'Oh, You Pretty Thing'
Diving deep into the occult, dealing with his brother’s mental health and preparing to become a father for the first time - David Bowie spent early 1971 with these thoughts in his mind whilst writing songs and music for other artists to use. When he realised that this material was too good, he headed to the studio and recorded his signature Art Rock album, ‘Hunky Dory’.

With the piano arrangements of Rick Wakeman and the orchestration of Mick Ronson combined with Bowie’s honest lyrics and expressive voice, ‘Hunky Dory’ would be one of his most down-to-earth albums. It painted us a picture of his mind at that stage of his life and gave us “an honest account of a man struggling to make sense of his life”.
