It was widely reported Monday afternoon that former LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri, who won a national championship with the Tigers in 2009 and got them back to a College World Series final in 2017, is expected to come out of retirement to fill the South Carolina head coaching vacancy.

Mainieri retired after the 2021 season and although he has been an advisory for Miami and another former team Notre Dame in their respective coaching searches, Mainieri has remained retired. However, the Gamecocks parted ways with their head coach Mark Kingston after the Gamecocks were eliminated by James Madison in the Raleigh regional. The hiring is expected to be made official after the South Carolina Board of Trustees meet to officially approve the hire.

Can Mainieri be successful at South Carolina? He is a proven commodity who has won championships and competed at a very high level for an extended period of time shown throughout his time at LSU. However, Mainieri has never existed in the NIL-era of collegiate athletics; Mainieri retired in June 2021, just one month before the Supreme Court unanimously voted to allow college athletes to benefit from the names, images, and likenesses. Is the former Tiger skipper ready to fully embrace the new wild west of college baseball, and is South Carolina going to give him the tools to be successful?

The spring transfer portal window opened on April 16th and now players across the country have until the end of the month to decide if they want to stay or leave from their current team before the 2024 season kicks off. As for LSU, head coach Brian Kelly said Saturday after the Tigers' spring game that they will focus on defensive tackles in the portal, a dire need after former LSU DTs Mekhi Wingo and Maason Smith declared for the NFL Draft. So who is out there for Kelly and company to get?

We are officially at the midway point of fall camp for the LSU Tigers and less than three weeks away from kicking off the 2023 season against the Florida State Seminoles on Labor Day weekend. So how is the LSU offense shaping up leading into the season?

This past week of practices starting quarterback Jayden Daniels has strung together some of his best days in camp. He has been accurate and in control of the offense all while combining a strong arm with one of his greatest and most unique strengths: his legs. Returning stars like WR Malik Nabers and TE Mason Taylor have, to no surprise, continued to prove themselves as integral weapons in the offense while improving and building upon their 2022 campaigns. But it doesn't stop with the biggest playmakers from last season; other role players looking to serve larger roles this season such as Chris Hilton, Brian Thomas, and Kyren Lacy have also been putting in work and getting their fair share of targets from Daniels and backup QB Garrett Nussmeier.

While the passing game has evolved and looks strong, no position group is as strong as the running back room. The Tigers have eight RBs on the roster, half of which have taken valuable snaps at the college level and can contribute right away. Returning Tigers such as Josh Williams, Armoni Goodwin, John Emery and Noah Cain are sharing snaps with Notre Dame transfer Logan Diggs along with true freshmen Trey Holly and Kaleb Jackson. How will offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock balance all eight of those backs and how will they be used? Could the running back position be LSU's X-factor offensively?
