SF Giants Midseason Recap: Heliot Ramos Breakout, Injuries, Help on Horizon

It's hard to believe, but the San Francisco Giants have passed the halfway point of the 2024 season. The Giants entered the year with high expectations, and there's no doubt they've fallen short of those expectations so far. The SF Giants have played inconsistent baseball, at times playing great and at times playing quite poorly.
The Giants have certainly had their bright spots. Heliot Ramos has been the best story of the season so far, as the former top prospect has finally blossomed into what looks like a solid everyday MLB player—perhaps more. Patrick Bailey has built off his strong rookie season with an even better 2024. LaMonte Wade Jr. was great before missing a month with a hamstring injury.
Injuries have played a key role in the SF Giants' overall disappointing first half performance. Mostly on the pitching side, but also on the position player side, the Giants have been ravaged by injuries. Right now they essentially have only Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks (who's performance has been another bright spot) as regular members of the starting rotation. The good news: the San Francisco Giants have multiple high-caliber arms returning soon, which could—and must—propel them to a better second half.

SF Giants Beat LA as Spencer Bivens Dazzles in First MLB Start, Offense Erupts
The San Francisco Giants entered this homestand reeling. The Giants had lost five of six games on its most recent homestand, and they faced a four-game series against a competitive Cubs team followed by three against the dreaded Dodgers. What did the Giants do? They took three of four from the Cubs and two of three from LA.
Spencer Bivens was the story on Sunday, as he dazzled in five innings of one-run ball against an extremely potent Dodgers lineup in his first major league start. The Giants are starved for innings right now, so Bivens pitching so well over five innings was huge. Bivens showed a ton of emotion as he struck out Shohei Ohtani—for the second time—to complete his fifth brilliant inning of work.
The Giants were essentially one swing away from sweeping the Dodgers. The Giants had the bases loaded and one out in the 10th inning of the middle game of the series with Patrick Bailey at the plate. Bailey could've ended the game in a number of ways, including via a sac fly. But Bailey struck out, Matt Chapman popped out, and the Dodgers went on to score seven runs in the top of the 11th to salvage a win in the series.
