SF Giants Beat Braves Behind Hayden Birdsong, Three Blasts

The San Francisco Giants needed to keep their recent momentum going, but it was looking like a tough task as they began a difficult road trip through Atlanta and Cleveland. Hayden Birdsong made just his second career start, and he was going up against a pitcher with an ERA in the 1.00s. It was Birdsong, however, who earned the win and propelled the Giants to a huge series-opening win against the Braves.
On the offensive side, despite falling down 2-0, the Giants had great at-bats all game. Matt Chapman was absolutely robbed in center field twice, including on a line drive that would've tied the game. But the SF Giants kept coming, and back-to-back homers by Jorge Soler and LaMonte Wade Jr. tied the game, and Heliot Ramos later added a big insurance run with another blast.
Meanwhile, Mike Yastrzemski returned from the injured list and collected two hits. SF Giants manager Bob Melvin made a difficult decision to pinch-hit for Yaz in a big spot later in the game, but Luis Matos ultimately got the job done in his place. The Giants also sent out a list of injury updates, with several pitchers on the mend and set to return in the coming weeks. The Giants' injury report is discussed.

He got some decent run support from the San Francisco Giants offense today, as they launched three home runs on their way to victory. Jorge Soler, who hit one of the home runs, has really been playing well lately and added to his hot streak today.

It's hard to believe, but the San Francisco Giants have passed the halfway point of the 2024 season. The Giants entered the year with high expectations, and there's no doubt they've fallen short of those expectations so far. The SF Giants have played inconsistent baseball, at times playing great and at times playing quite poorly.
The Giants have certainly had their bright spots. Heliot Ramos has been the best story of the season so far, as the former top prospect has finally blossomed into what looks like a solid everyday MLB player—perhaps more. Patrick Bailey has built off his strong rookie season with an even better 2024. LaMonte Wade Jr. was great before missing a month with a hamstring injury.
Injuries have played a key role in the SF Giants' overall disappointing first half performance. Mostly on the pitching side, but also on the position player side, the Giants have been ravaged by injuries. Right now they essentially have only Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks (who's performance has been another bright spot) as regular members of the starting rotation. The good news: the San Francisco Giants have multiple high-caliber arms returning soon, which could—and must—propel them to a better second half.
