Local Color - Episode 72 - Amanda Mack
play

05/10/20 • 43 min

If I were a venture capitalist I'd fully fund Amanda Mack's brand, Crust by Mack. Why? Because unlike SOME PEOPLE who think pie FILLING is the most important part of a pie, Amanda focuses on the ACTUAL IMPORTANT PART of the pie, which is the CRUST. I can't STAND it when crusts are all flimsy and weak; I need a hearty crust on my pies and desserts. Listen as Amanda talks about the key to a good crust, the lessons (and disguised blessings) she's received on her entrepreneurial journey, and why one 4-letter F word is as important to her as another 6-letter F word.

Local Color - Episode 69 - Erica Bentley
play

03/22/20 • 37 min

A huntress is always at the ready; like a forward scout, they have a bow in hand and an arrow ready to fly. Erica Bentley calls herself a huntress, and she's always looking to add the next piece to her collection @keepersvintage. The hunt for vintage has always been in Erica's blood; when she was young she studied the monthly texts. As she got older, she gained experience from the fashion high scholars and artisans, and for a short time ran with a band of other huntresses. Eventually, Erica had enough experience and knowledge to start her own hunt, one that continues to this day...

Local Color - Episode 76 - Doz Of Fitness
play

07/07/20 • 32 min

i was scrolling through my IG feed between sets at the gym and happened upon Chidozie's IG acct. He's more shredded than a julienne salad and his videos show beginner to advanced fitness routines and exercises. Even though he doesn't live in Baltimore I decided to reach out for an interview because it's been a long time since I've interviewed anyone in the fitness world, and his story is quite interesting. Listen as we discuss Chidozie's early life, a trip to Nigeria that almost claimed his life, going to school during COVID, and of course, stuff about fitness, nutrition and discipline!

Local Color - Episode 57 - Andrea Boston
play

09/09/18 • 38 min

Andrea is that one friend that's always down to explore what life has to offer. Aside from starting her own pop-up happy hour event with fellow Baltimorean Nia Johnson, Andrea has contributed to the social and creative fabric of Baltimore City. Listen as Andrea talks about finding a creative outlet independent of her siblings, travelling from the Midwest to the East Coast, and still finding purpose even when your life's vision takes a left turn.

Local Color - Episode 71 - Angela N Carroll
play

04/26/20 • 41 min

Let's get something straight off the rip. Angela Carroll is NOT a critic. Why? Well, you'll have to listen to find out. I was going to split this into two separate episodes, but the knowledge Angela graces us with is best received in a single sitting. The Maryland native went to the West Coast, and among the eldritch redwoods did she receive an education in the art of critical theory, and had her train of thought challenged in a way the East Coast could not challenge her. Angela brought that experience with her back home, and works as an artist-archivist in Charm City. She wants to give DMV artists the credit they deserve, and celebrate bodies of work that are decades in the making, and far from finished.

Local Color - Episode 81 - I Am Mentality
play

12/07/20 • 38 min

I first connected with Darren Rogers in 2018 after sending him an episode of a podcast project I started a few years back (and still have yet to finish...). We're on separate paths and have the same goal: to make Baltimore a better place. Two years later, we re-connected to talk about the big changes we've had in our personal lives, the growth and maturation of our passion projects, and look to the future.

Local Color - Episode 87 - Media Rhythm Institute
play

03/23/21 • 60 min

The Media Rhythm Institute is a collaboration born from the minds of two Baltimoreans (one by way of Florida) that combined their love of hip hop, and passion for youth education. MRI blends media literacy, STEM, and artistic expression into a program that's spawned mini-documentaries, compilation mixtapes, and perhaps most importantly, a level of understanding and camaraderie with two communities that were headed fast down a path of mutually assured destruction.

Local Color - Episode 84 - Rob Lee
play

02/09/21 • 58 min

This was an easier episode to edit because my guest Rob Lee is a podcaster. A native of East Baltimore Rob stood out from other kids when growing up, and looking back it was a formative experience that helped him find his voice. Listen as we chop it up about the art of podcasting itself, being a black podcaster in Baltimore, his experiences in the professional world as a data analyst, and fasting (yes, fasting).
