Living Beyond ADHD

Living Beyond ADHD

Dr B - Barbara A. Cohen, Ph.D., MFT, innovative educator, coach & therapist

ADHD is one of the most researched yet least understood conditions of our time. Living Beyond ADHD host, Dr B, is here to explore relevant information that just isn't making it from the experts to the general public, and to close that gap. Those diagnoses missed in earlier years and made in adulthood, add many burdens to the discovery. Failed marriages, bankruptcy, unemployment, academic failure, underachieving, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and a deep mistrust of self, are just the tip of the iceberg. In order to live a happier, more productive and successful adult life in today’s world, you must learn the essential executive function skills and strategies. Those under-developed skills and strategies rather than just your ADHD could be what are driving your greatest challenges.

Living Beyond ADHD - The Importance of Executive Function Pre-Skills – 120
play

05/24/23 • 33 min

How often do you do the prep work for your tasks? Do you know what I mean by prep work? Most people I know really dislike the prep work and just want to get down to doing the task. They even feel that the prep work is a waste of their time because it isn’t getting the job done. And, they are short on time as it is, so this is just a non-essential thing to do. But is it really? Everything in life needs prep work and maintenance. If you are the cook in your family or home, you need to prep the meal before you can make it and then eat it. If you are going to work on an art project, you need to prep and make sure you have all the supplies you need for your project before you embark or you’ll be running out to the store or aborting the project when you find out that you don’t have what you need. What about leading a meeting at work? Do you just show up and talk, or do you need to prep for the meeting so you stay on topic for the purpose of the meeting and are clear on what you will present? Like I said, prep work and maintenance is just part of life.

Prep work can include many Executive Function skills or Executive Function pre-skills. And, if you don’t have solid pre-skills, then building your Executive Function skills on a flimsy foundation isn’t going to get you sustainable results. The 3 Executive Function pre-skills that I feel are essential are your relationship with time and how you manage yourself and time itself, procrastination and how you eliminate it from your life, and decision-making since you are making decisions every day, and sometimes all day long. Do you trust yourself with time and the decisions you make? Have you eliminated procrastination from your life?

In this episode, I talk about:

  • Executive Function pre-skills development
  • The importance of developing a dynamic plan with a strong foundation
  • What it's like to work with Dr B
  • And more!

Developing your Executive Function Skills and shifting your limiting beliefs is the fastest and most effective way to overcome ADHD limitations, find focus, gain confidence, and a newfound freedom in your life! My mission is to put an end to the worldwide needless suffering of adults with ADHD and those with under-developed Executive Function Skills - whether from ADHD, chronic depression or anxiety, trauma, addictions, or chronic illnesses. Welcome to the thirty-ninth episode of Harness Your ADHD Power.

I’m so glad you could join me today. One of the episodes you all are listening to the most is 027, figuring out where to start when so much needs your attention now. That said, I decided that it’s important for you to understand what some of the steps are you need to be taking in order to be successful in getting a handle on all the moving parts of your life that need your attention now.

I talk a lot about pre-skills. What do I mean by this term? Pre-skills are whatever skills you need to learn or master in order to do what you want or need to do and you won’t be able to do so without the pre-skills.

I posed a question years ago. It was, if you were able to focus on what you need to focus on, when you need to focus on it, and how you need to focus on it and complete your tasks, AND, if you were able to regulate your moods or emotions when you needed to, and how you needed to so you didn’t become overwhelmed or derailed by your emotional life, would those two solutions address the majority of the challenges you experience from your ADHD? The answer I got years ago was a definite YES. What about your answer? A definite YES?

Imagine being able to master these two areas of your life. This is truly what I mean by pre-skills. They are the pre-requisites to your success in so many areas of your life. I can teach you strategies for following through or prioritizing or organizing or better communication with loved ones, however, if you can’t regulate your focus and emotional state, you’re going to have difficulty mastering the strategies and tools.

Something else I’ve noticed is a lack of a sense of urgency in those with ADHD until the urgency comes crashing in on you from the outside; but no sense of urgency to get into action and follow through from within yourself, in most cases.

And what about your “criteria” for the decision you need to make? Do you have any? Or rather, do you have the type of “criteria” that will empower you to make good decisions and know why you’ve made them? Without that, how can you possibly learn from your mistakes or outcomes?

In this episode, I’m going explore the many pre-skills that are essential to you designing, cultivating and mastering a happier and more productive life across all areas of your life.

Being an Achiever isn’t just about developing your EF Skills; you also need to become the person who is the Achiever, instead of thinking of yourself as the person who is the ADDer. Saying “I am an Achiever” is the first step to taking on an empowering new Identity, just as saying “I am an ADDer, is a step that reinforces keeping the same old disempowering Identity.

Are you telling yourself stories or reliving your past failed attempts and making that your reality today? You’re probably not doing this consciously, however, many of us base our current reality on possibilities of what you’ve done in the past. Statements like, “this is just how I am” or “this doesn’t feel like me” or “I can’t see myself living that way” are common.

The good news?

Executive Function skills can be learned, no matter what age you are. No matter where you are located in the world. All it takes is the right training, strategies and support.

In this episode Dr B talks about:
  • What can happen when ADHD and under-developed executive function skills are lumped together for diagnosis and treatment
  • Giving a new meaning to ADHD and under-developed executive function skills
  • The importance of celebrating your wins
  • Enrollment opening now for the January 2021 ADDventures in Achievement Foundational Skills program

Developing your Executive Function Skills and shifting your limiting beliefs is the fastest and most effective way to overcome ADHD limitations, find focus, gain confidence, and newfound freedom in your life!
