A Night on the Orient Express and History of Railroads | Sleepy Train Ride
Lights Out Library: Sleep Documentaries
04/28/24 • 51 min
This bedtime story is about the mythical Orient Express service and the history of railways. Discover where the Orient Express came from: the story takes us to the early development of trains in Great Britain, the railroad mania of the 19th Century, the conquest of the Far West, the invention of luxury sleeping cars in the US by George Pullman, and the creation of the Compagnie des Wagons-Lits. For almost a century, the Orient Express was a link between two corners of Europe and connected capitals from the Belle Epoque to the 1970s, adapting to wars, the redrawing of frontiers, political changes, and technical revolutions. Relive this epic that inspired artists, adventurers, and writers like Agatha Christie.

Stonehenge and its Ancient Mysteries | Sleep History
Lights Out Library: Sleep Documentaries
02/18/24 • 58 min
In tonight's story, I discuss the long history of Stonehenge, from the first works on the site by people from the Windmill Hill culture around 3100 BC, to the multiple works and rearrangements that took place until 1600 BC. After this, Stonehenge continued to live a life of its own and was adopted by the druids, became a legendary monument, and revealed extraordinary secrets since the 20th century. After Stonehenge, I also tell you of Skara Brae, a very well preserved neolithic village in the Orkney Islands (Scotland), and we explore its 5000-year-old houses.

History of the Silk Road | Sleep History Story
Lights Out Library: Sleep Documentaries
07/21/24 • 70 min
Tonight, I take you on a journey along the Silk Road. We explore how and why this route or network from China to the Mediterranean opened at the time of the Han Dynasty and Ancient Rome.
Given the distances and costs, long distance trade was limited to light, expensive and exotic goods, like silk, glassware, fine crafts, perfumes and spices. It adapted to changes over centuries: the rise and fall of dynasties in China, the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the struggles of Byzantium, the Muslim conquest, the Mongol invasion, the rise of Italian merchant republics...
I also tell you about how the Black Death epidemic spread along the Silk Road in the 14th Century and the rediscovery of land routes to the Far East by European travelers of the Middle Ages, especially Marco Polo.

Mystery of the Lost Legion | Historical Mystery for Sleep
Lights Out Library: Sleep Documentaries
02/23/25 • 63 min
The Ninth Legion (Legio IX Hispana, also sometimes called the "Lost Legion") had a long history. It served under the command of Julius Caesar during the First Century BC, on the side of Octavian in the civil war against Mark Antony and Cleopatra, and was sent to Spain, Germania, Pannonia, and Britain. In Roman Britain, it fought against rebellions, including the rebellion of Queen Boudica in which it narrowly avoided destruction. But its trace was lost in Northern England in the early Second Century AD, which is highly unusual for such an important unit at a time when the Roman Empire was in good shape overall. Was it destroyed in Britain by Celtic tribes, sent to the Netherlands, or did it disappear in a later conflict in Judea or Cappadocia? In this story, we examine the hypotheses and historical context, which provides a good opportunity to explore what Roman legions were, the conquest of Roman Britain, and other aspects of Roman history.
