Prepare for an episode with so much realness you may find yourself nodding along the entire time. Today’s guest, Sammi Tatarsky, chats on all things anxiety, mental health, therapy, and disordered eating all while sharing her own experiences (and I even share mine too!) Although anxiety is commonly seen as a struggle for late teens and adults, Sammi shares the backstory of her anxiety and how it started when she was merely a child in elementary school. This journey through the years of anxiety and school leads to Sammi sharing her thoughts on therapy and I hop into the conversation to share my experience with EMDR therapy. The discussion on mental health explores why it’s seen as ‘taboo’, how to support mental health, and what practices Sammi utilizes on a daily basis. In this she shares her experience with disordered eating, navigating college diet culture, and battling body dysmorphia as well as what finally pulled her from that lifestyle. It’s a loaded episode with so many inspirational tidbits to take away so listen close and let us know what you think! Find us on instagram: Sammi @_sammibrooke and me @emilyfeikls

As a Physician's Assistant and Integrative Nutritionist, Katie Lemons has had a long journey to the present. With years of schooling and experience, Katie shares what it takes to turn a love for health into a deepened education and future career path. In this she shares why she chose to not take the RD route and what it was like to get a masters + attend PA school. Her commitment to education is what allows Katie to now fuse both western and integrative medicine all while navigating the oftentimes confusing field of health. She was also faced with expectations along the way of what a ‘healthy’ body should look like and felt let down by the expectations she had set for her school and career path. We discuss how she overcame these ‘let down’ expectations and continued to thrive. Katie is a prime example of someone willing to persevere through the hard times for the eventual sweet ending.

In this episode we discuss:

The impact of diet culture on health can have long and lasting effects. Today’s guest, Sam Gwazdaukas, was first introduced to the diet culture mindset as a child and continued to struggle with it for years to come. The messaging she received was to lose weight, be smaller, eat less, workout more, and this caused her to become obsessive, restrictive, and out of control with both food and exercise. Sam shares her journey from then to now and displays the radical mindset shifts that helped heal her relationship to health. This episode is a prime example of how diet culture can take over our life and yet we can still overcome it with time. Sam shares fitness and body confidence content on her instagram and continues to shed light on the dangers of obsessive health.

In this episode we discuss:

  • The impact of diet culture on youth and adults
  • How ‘health’ shifts when diet culture is involved
  • The pressure to change body shape and size
  • How media influences our health standards
  • The isolation of disordered eating
  • How to identify what’s normal behavior vs disordered eating
  • Reclaiming your life after an ED
  • The starvation and surplus mindset
  • Why words and comments matter
  • Questions to ask yourself in recovery

What does success mean to you? In today’s episode with Cameron Rogers of @freckledfoodie we discuss what it means to redefine your definition of success to live a happier life and stress less. As the building blocks of what most consider ‘successful’, Cameron and I chat about what it means to find success in things outside of work, money, and external validation. As a former employee of JP Morgan Cameron has felt the radical transition from working a job associated with status and money to becoming a self-made entrepreneur in the health and wellness scene of NYC. Her values of finances had to shift in order for her to make this new life work and in that process she redefined what success looks like to her. As another part of that journey Cameron shares what it took for her to overcome limiting beliefs, value her self worth, look past societal standards, and find her voice in her work. We discuss what it means to be honest with ourselves and brands when placing a value on our work and how to ask for the appropriate compensation. As well as how to ‘not’ compare ourselves and work with a past version of things but instead make a new standard to follow. Cameron also shares what it was like to start this work process while healing from severe heavy metal poisoning. Her health journey was a confusing time for her and she advises on how to be your own advocate in the health field while not becoming obsessed with the outcome. The final topic we discuss is of Cameron’s podcast, Freckled Foodie and Friends, and what to expect from it. We chat of the fun and work we put into our podcasts and Cameron displays why Freckled Foodie and Friends is not your average show.
