Let's Talk Greek

D: Εμπρός;/ Hello?

E: Γειά σου Δανάη μου εγώ είμαι η Έμιλυ / Hey Danai, it’s me Emily.

D: Εμιλύ μου, τι κάνεις; / Emily, how are you?

E: Όλα καλά. Εσύ πως είσαι; / Everything good, how are you?

D: Καλά... δηλαδή είμαι πολύ στεναχωρημένη. / Good.. I mean I am a little sad.

E: Γιατί αγάπη μου τι έγινε; / Why my love what happened?

D: Ε Δεν μπορώ άλλο. Κάθε μέρα κάνω τα ίδια πράγματα. Σηκώνομαι πολύ νωρίς. Ξυπνάω τον Αλέξη και το παιδί. Ετοιμάζω το πρωινό, ντύνω το παιδί, το πάω στο σχολείο, πάω στη δουλειά μου, γυρίζω αργά το μεσημέρι και μαγειρεύω. Μετά ξανά έξω, πάω το παιδί στα αγγλικά ή στην πισίνα ή στο ωδείο. Το φέρνω ξανά στο σπίτι, έρχεται και ο Αλέξης, τρώμε όλοι μαζί και κάθε μέρα τα ίδια. Τώρα ο Αλέξης βλέπει τηλεόραση και ο μικρός λέει οτι διαβάζει αλλά εγώ νομίζω ότι παίζει στον υπολογιστή. Νομίζω χρειάζομαι χρόνο για μένα... χρειάζομαι διασκέδαση. / I can’t do this anymore. Everyday I do the same things. I get up early. I wake up Alexis and the kid. I prepare breakfast, I dress up the kid, I take him to school, I go to work,I get back late in the afternoon and I cook. Then I take the kid to English class or to the pool or the the music school. I bring him back home, Alexis comes hom too, we eat all together and everyday the same. Now Alexis is watching TV and the little one says that he is studying but I think that he is playing on his computer. I think I need some me time, I need to have fun.

E: Σε καταλαβαίνω Δανάη μου. Τι λες πάμε σινεμά αύριο; / I understand Danai. What do you think, shall we go to the movies?

D: Βεβαίως! Τι ωραία! Αχ, αύριο δεν μπορώ θα πάμε με τον άντρα μου στο σπίτι του διευθυντή του για φαγητό. / Of course, how nice! Ah, tomorrow I can’t, we will go wit hmy husband to his boss’ house for dinner.

E: Μεθαύριο; /What about the day after tomorrow.

D: Μεθαύριο ευχαρίστως! Α όχι μεθαύριο δεν μπορώ, θα πάω με μία φίλη μου σε μία έκθεση φωτογραφίας. / The day after tomorrow of course! Oh nooo the day after tomorrow I can’t, I will go to a photography gallery with a friend.

E: Τέλος πάντων! Την παρασκευή; / Anyways, Friday???

D: Ε τώρα... ξέρεις. Κάθε παρασκευή βράδυ βγαίνω με τον Αλέξη για βραδινό. Ίσως το σαββατοκύριακο... ΑΧ όχι θα πάμε εκδρομή στον Παρνασσό. / Umm, you know.. Every Friday we go out to dinner with Alexis. Maybe on the weekend!

E: Δανάη μου, όταν έχεις χρόνο, μου τηλεφωνείς και βγαίνουμε! / Danai, when you have time just call me and we will meet.

D: Αχ μπράβο είσαι η πιο καλή φίλη του κόσμου! / Bravo! You are the best friend in the world

E: Μεθαύριο; /What about the day after tomorrow.

E: Τέλος πάντων! Την παρασκευή; / Anyways, Friday???

E: Δανάη μου, όταν έχεις χρόνο, μου τηλεφωνείς και βγαίνουμε! / Danai, when you have time just call me and we will meet.

D: Αχ μπράβο είσαι η πιο καλή φίλη του κόσμου! / Bravo! You are the best friend in the world

E: Παρακαλώ; / Hello?

D: Γεια σου Εμιλυ, η Δανάη είμαι! Τι κάνεις; / Hi Emily, Danai here! How are you?

E: Αχ, γεια σου Δανάη μου! Καλά είμαι,εσύ; / Oh hi Danai! I am good, you?

D: Πολύ καλα! Έχεις χρόνο το απόγευμα για καφέ; / Very good! Do you have time this evening for a coffee?

E: Ναι, αμέ! Τί ώρα λες; / Yes, sure! What time?

D: Κατά τις 6 είναι καλά; / Around 6, is it good?

E: Τέλεια! Στη γνωστή καφετέρια; / Perfect! At our regular coffee spot?

D: Ναι. Θα σε δω εκεί! / Yes, I will see you there

E: Φιλιά! / Kisses

[a few moments Later]

D: Γεια σου! / Heyyy

E: Γειαααα! / Hiii

D: Τι κάνεις; Καιρό έχουμε να βγούμε για καφέ! / How are you? Haven’t been out for a coffee for a while.

E: Πω πω όντως! Καλά είμαι, εσυ; / Po Po (greek phrase) indeed! I am good, you?

D: Πολύ καλά! Ήμουν άρρωστη την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα. / Very good! I was sick last week.

E: Αμάν! Τι είχες; / Oh no! What happened?

D: Είχα πυρετό, συνάχι, βήχα και πονούσε ο λαιμός μου. / I had a fever, a runny nose, a cough and a sore throat.

E: Χρειάστηκε να πας στον γιατρό; / Did you need to go to the doctor?

D: Ναι. Μου έδωσε ένα σιρόπι για τον βήχα, παυσίπονο για τον πυρετό και καραμέλες για τον λαιμό. / Yes, they gave me a syrup for coughing, fever reducer and cough drops.

E: Ακούγεται σαν να ταλαιπωρήθηκες πολύ βρε! / It sounds like you went through a lot.

D: Ε! Έτσι είναι όταν κρυώνεις.. / Em it is like this when you catch a cold.

E: Ε! Έτσι είναι όπως τα λες! Τώρα όμως είσαι καλά έτσι; Indeed you are right! Now you feel better right?

D: Ναι! Τώρα είμαι καλά! Πες μου εσυ τα νέα σου! / Yes! I am good now! Tell me your news!

E: Εμείς ετοιμαζόμαστε να πάμε εκδρομή στην Αθήνα. / We are getting ready to go on a trip to Athens.

D: Αχ! Τι ωραία! Μου αρέσει πολύ η Αθήνα. / Aaah! Nice! I love Athens.

E: Ναι κι εμένα! / Yeah me too!

D: Τι θα κάνετε εκεί; / What are your plans (for Athens)?

E: θα πάμε να δούμε το μουσείο της Ακρόπολης, θα πάμε θέατρο και άμα προλάβουμε θα πάμε και για ψώνια. / We are going to see the Acropolis museum, we will go to a theater and if we have time we will go shopping.

D: Μου έχει λείψει να δω θέατρο. / I miss going to the theater.

E: Μμμμ και εμένα πολύ! / Yeah same here

D: Για πόσες μέρες θα πάτε; / For how many days are you going?

E: Θα πάμε για 3 μέρες. / We are going for 3 days

D: Ε τότε πρέπει να βγούμε για καφέ όταν γυρίσεις να μου πεις πως περάσατε! / Then we have to go out for a coffee when you come back to tell me if you had fun.

E: Εννοείται! Αγάπη πρέπει να φύγω. Να προλάβω να ετοιμάσω τα πράγματα! / Of course! I have to go love. I have to pack the things on time.

D: Ναι ναι! Πήγαινε θα πληρώσω εγώ. / Yes yes! Go, I’ll pay.

E: Σε ευχαριστώ πολύ! Την επόμενη φορά θα πληρώσω εγώ! / Thank you! I’ll pay next time!

D: Ενταξει! Φιλία πολλά και καλά να περάσετε! / Okay! Many kisses and have fun!

E: Ευχαριστούμε! Φιλάκια! / Thank you, kisses

D: Παρακαλώ; / Hello?

E: Έλα Δανάη, η Εμιλυ είμαι. Τι κανεις; / Hello Danai, Emily here, how are you?

D: Καλα Εμιλυ μου, εσυ; / I am good Emily, and you?

E: Πολύ καλά! Άκουσα στις ειδήσεις ότι είχατε πολύ άσχημο καιρό εκεί στο Illinois με πολύ χαμηλές θερμοκρασίες και χιόνι. / Very good! I heard on the news that you had bad weather in Illinois with low temperatures and snow.

D: Αχ άσε... έχει τώρα δύο εβδομάδες που η θερμοκρασία έχει κολλήσει στους -25 με -30 βαθμούς Κελσίου! / Yes! It’s been two weeks since the temperature is stuck on the -25 to -30 degrees celsius!

E: Πω πω μα τι λες τώρα! Πως πηγαίνετε στις δουλειές σας; / Po po what are you saying? How are you going to work?

D: Ε στην αρχή ήταν δύσκολα γιατί έπεσε απότομα η θερμοκρασία αλλά μετά τις πρώτες τέσσερις πέντε μέρες το συνηθίσαμε. / At the beginning it was very difficult because the temperature dropped but after the first 4-5 days we got used to it!

E: Μα καλά, συνηθίζεται τέτοιο κρύο; / but how do you get use to this cold?

D: Όχι εύκολα! (laughing) / Not easily

E: Το σκυλάκι σας πως το βγάζετε βολτα; / how do you take your dog out for a walk?

D: Στην αρχή και εκείνη είχε σοκαριστεί πολύ από το κρύο. Δεν μπορούσε να περπατήσει. / At the beginning she was in shock from the low temperatures, she couldn’t walk.

E: Πω πω! Ρεεε το καημένο το σκυλί! / Po Po! Reeeee poor dog

D: Άσε! Εσάς εκεί τι λέει ο καιρός; / How is the weather over there?

E: Πωωωω και εδώ τα ίδια αλλά όχι σαν εσάς. Εδώ έφτασε μέχρι -10 το πολύ αλλά δεν είμαστε συνηθισμένοι στα κρύα. / Pooooo here the same but not like over there. Here it reached -10 the most but we are not used to the cold.

D: Είδαμε και εμάς που είμαστε. Για να βγω έξω φορούσα σκουφί και γάντια εννοείται, μακρύ μπουφάν μέχρι τον αστράγαλο, τρεις τεσσερις μπλούζες, παντελόνι του σκι και μπότες με γούνα. / Yeah we are not used to it either. In order to go out I was wearing a beanie and gloves of course, long jacket till my ankle, 3-4 t-shirts, ski pants and boots with a fair.

E: ΧΑΧΑ σαν κρεμμύδι ήσουν ντυμένη. Απορώ πως περπατούσες. / Haha you were dressed like an onion! I am wondering how you were able to walk.

D: Πραγματικά! Ευτυχώς το σαββατοκύριακο λέει ότι θα έχει λιακάδα. / Indeed! Hopefully it says that it will be sunny on the weekend.

E: Άντε ευτυχώς! / Hopefully!

D: Λοιπόν αγάπη σ αφήνω γιατί ξύπνησε το παιδί. / So I am going to go because my kid just woke up.

E: Πήγαινε πήγαινε. Τα λέμε αύριο φιλιά. / Go go. Talk to you tomorrow. Kisses.

D: Έλλλα φιλάκια. / Ela, kisses
