D: Γεια σας! Πως μπορώ να σας εξυπηρετήσω; / Hello, how can I help you?

E: Μπορείτε να μου πείτε η παράσταση «Όρνιθες» ποιες μέρες παίζει και τι ώρες; / Can you please tell me what are the days and times for the play “Ornithes”?

D: Βεβαίως! Η παράσταση παίζεται κάθε Τετάρτη στις 6 το απόγευμα, Πέμπτη στις 6 και μισή, Παρασκευή στις 7 το απόγευμα και το Σάββατο έχει μια παράσταση στις 5 το απόγευμα και μια στις 8 το βράδυ. / Of course! The play is every Wednesday at 6pm, Thursday at 6:30pm, Friday at 7pm and on Saturdays there is one at 5pm and one at 8pm

E: Χμμ... Είμαι ανάμεσα στην παράσταση της Παρασκευής και του Σαββάτου την βραδινή. Υπάρχει κάποια διαφορά στην τιμή; / Hmm I am between the one on Friday and the one on Saturday night. Is there any price difference?

D: Όχι, η τιμή είναι ίδια όλες τις μέρες εκτός κι αν είστε φοιτήτρια. No, the price is the same everyday unless you are a (university) student.

E: Μμ όχι δεν είμαι. Βγάλτε μου 2 εισιτήρια για αυτο το Σάββατο, την βραδινή παράσταση. Ποσό κάνουν; Em no I am not. Can I have 2 tickets for this Saturday at night? How much is it?

D: Το σύνολο είναι 30€. Θα πληρώσετε μετρητά ή με κάρτα; / The total is 30 euros. Will you pay cash or card?

E: Με κάρτα παρακαλώ. Ορίστε. / With card please.

D: Ευχαριστώ! Ορίστε τα εισιτήρια και η απόδειξη σας. / Thank you. Here are your tickets and your receipt.

E: Ευχαριστώ. Πόση ώρα πριν ξεκινήσει η παράσταση πρέπει να έρθουμε; / Thank you. How long before the play should we be here?

D: Καλό είναι να είστε εδώ τουλάχιστον μισή ώρα πριν ξεκινήσει η παράσταση ώστε να έχετε χρόνο να βρείτε τις θέσεις σας και να πάρετε κάτι να πιείτε αν θέλετε. Το φαγητο απαγορεύεται κατά την διάρκεια της παράστασης. / It is good to be here at least half an hour in advance so you have time to find your seats and to get something to drink if you want. Food and drinks are prohibited during the show.

E: Ωραία! Σας ευχαριστώ για τις πληροφορίες! / Nice! Thank you for the information

D: Παρακαλώ! Καλή σας μέρα! / You’re welcome! Have a good day

E: (Phone ringing) Έλα Δανάη, τι κάνεις; Τώρα θα σου έστελνα μήνυμα./ Hi Danai, how are you? I was just about to text you.

D: Αλήθεια; χαχα τι ωραία. Όλα καλά αγάπη. Ετοιμαζόμαστε σιγά σιγά για να περάσουμε τα Χριστούγεννα με την οικογένεια. Εσύ, πώς είσαι;/ Really? How nice! All good love. We’re getting ready to spend Christmas with the family. How are you?

E: Είμαι πολύ καλά! Απολαμβάνω τις διακοπές των χριστουγέννων. Έχω άδεια μέχρι αρχες Ιανουαρίου./ I’m very good! Enjoying the Christmas Holidays. I’m off work until the beginning of January.

D: Τι ωραία, ελπίζω να ξεκουραστείς. Έχετε κανονίσει κάτι για τα Χριστούγεννα;/ That’s great, I hope you rest. Do you have any plans for Christmas?

E: Αχ ναιιιι! Τα Χριστούγεννα θα έρθει η ξαδέρφη μου από την Ελλάδα για διακοπές στην Νέα Υόρκη. Θα πάμε σε πολλά μέρη για να τους δείξουμε την πόλη και σίγουρα θα περάσουμε από το γνωστό rockfeller center να δούμε το χριστουγεννιάτικο δέντρο και τα φώτα. Κάθε χρόνο μου αρέσει να πηγαίνω εκεί και να νιώθω το πνεύμα των Χριστουγέννων. Την ημέρα των Χριστουγέννων θα έχουμε οικογενειακό τραπέζι στο σπίτι του αδερφού μου. Η μαμά μου θα κάνει σίγουρα τους παραδοσιακούς λαχανοσαρμάδες και αρνί στον φούρνο με πατάτες για τον άντρα μου. Του αρέσει πάρα πολύ το αρνί χαχα! Έχει κάνει ήδη μελομακάρονα και κουραμπιέδες και ίσως κάνει ένα ελληνικό cheesecake για γλυκό./ Yes! My cousin is coming from Greece for the Christmas holidays. We’ll visit many places to show her the city and of course we’ll visit the famous Rockefeller center to see the Christmas tree and lights. On Christmas Day we’ll have dinner at my brother’s house. My mom will make the traditional cabbage rolls and lamb in the oven with potatoes for my husband. He really likes lamb! She’s already made melomakarono and kourabiedes and she’ll maybe make a Greek cheesecake for dessert.

D: Ναι ξέρω το ελληνικό cheesecake είναι το καλύτερο, χωρίς αυγό, απλα με τυρί κρέμα και είναι τόσο δροσερό. Θα ήθελα να έχω κι εγώ τη μαμά μου εδώ να κάναμε μελομακάρονα και κουραμπιέδες. Την πρωτοχρονιά τι θα κάνετε;/ Yes, I know of the Greek cheesecake it’s the best, without egg, just cream cheese and so refreshing. I would love to have my mono here too and bake melomakarono and kourabie. What will you do for the New Year?

E: Αχ την πρωτοχρονιά δεν ξέρω ακόμα. Σίγουρα θα αλλάξουμε χρόνο όλοι μαζί και θα φάμε βραδινό όπως κάθε χρόνο. Εσείς τι πλάνα έχετε;/ Ah I don’t know yet. For sure we’ll change the year all together and eat dinner like every year. How about you?

D: Καλή ερώτηση! Χαχα! Δεν ξέρω ακόμα τι θα κάνουμε τα Χριστούγεννα. Έχουν έρθει τα πεθερικά μου από Ελλάδα και ίσως πάμε στην αδερφή του άντρα μου ή στον μικρότερο αδερφό της πεθεράς μου. Ως κλασικοί Έλληνες το αφήνουμε πάντα για την τελευταία στιγμή. Χαχα! Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι θα υπάρχει η παραδοσιακή Ζακυνθινή κουλούρα στο τραπέζι. Αλλά πιο πολύ ανυπομονώ για τα πρώτα Χριστούγεννα με την Αννάλια μας./ Good question! I don’t know yet what we’ll do for Christmas. My in-laws came from Greece and we’ll either go to my husbands sister or to the house of the younger brother of my mother in law. Like classic Greeks we always wait until last minute to decide. The only sure thing is the traditional cake bread from Zakynthos. But most of all I can’t wait for Annalia’s first Christmas.

Ε: Αχ να περάσετε τέλεια! Τα πρώτα σας Χριστούγεννα με την μπέμπα θα είναι τα καλύτερα!/ Have fun! The first Christmas with your baby girl are going to be the best!

D: Ναι ανυπομονώ και εγώ! Χάρηκα που τα είπαμε. Να περάσετε και εσεις όμορφα με την οικογένεια και καλώς να δεχτείτε την ξαδέρφη σου. Φιλάκιαααα./ Yes, I can’t wait either! I’m so glad we spoke. I hope you have a great time with your family and your cousin. Kisses

D: Πώς ήταν η βάφτιση του Αχιλλέα; / How was Achilleas’ baptism?

E: Αχ, πάρα πολύ ωραία! Περάσαμε τέλεια! / Ah it was amazing! We had a lot of fun.

D: Στολίσατε την εκκλησία και την κολυμπήθρα; / Did you decorate the church and the baptistery?

E: Δεν στολίσαμε την εκκλησία, ούτε την κολυμπήθρα γιατί δεν μας άφησαν. Στολίσαμε όμως το εξοχικό μας που έγινε το πάρτυ μετά την βάφτιση. / No we didn’t decorate the church, neither the baptistery because they didn’t let us. We decorated our beach house though where we had the party after the baptism.

D: Ο Αχιλλέας πώς ήτανε; Έκλαψε καθόλου; / How was Achilleas? Did he cry at all?

E: Άσε, έκανε πολλή ζέστη και ήταν γκρινιάρης. Όταν βγάλαμε τα ρούχα και οι νονές βάλανε το λάδι ήταν ήρεμος. Αλλά μόλις ο παπάς τον έβαλε στο νερό άρχισε να κλαίει πολύ. Μετά του έκοψε τα μαλλιά και φόρεσε τα βαφτιστικά του. Του έδωσα και ένα μπισκοτάκι και ηρέμισε. / It was extremely hot and he was fussy. When we took his clothes off and his godmathers put the oil on him, he was calm. But when the priest put him in the water he started crying a lot. After that we gave him a cookie and he was calm.

D: Αχ ψυχή μου! Πως περάσατε στο πάρτυ; / Aww my heart! How was the party?

E: Περάσαμε αξέχαστα. Είχαμε μπομπονιέρες και σαμπάνια στην είσοδο για τους καλεσμένους. Είχαμε πολύ φαγητό, σουβλάκια, μπριζόλες, κοτόπουλο ψητό, σαλάτες και πατάτες. / We had a great time. We had the baptism favors and some campaign in the entrance for our friends. We had a lot of food, souvlakia, steak, chichen, salads and potatoes.

D: Πω πω ακούγονται νόστιμα. / Po po they sound delicious.

E: Ήταν όλα πεντανόστιμα. Είχαμε και δύο φωτογράφους και βγάλαμε πολλές φωτογραφίες. Ο Αχιλλέας όμως ήταν πολύ κουρασμένος και πήγε για ύπνο νωρίς. Μετά εμείς ξεκινήσαμε τον χορό και τα κοκτέιλ. / Everything was delicious. We had two photographers and we took a lot of pictures. But Achilleas was very tired and he went to bed early. After that we started dancing and drinking cocktails.

D: Φαντάζομαι και πολύ καλά κάνατε. Ο μικρός είμαι σίγουρη ότι ήταν πολύ κουρασμένος. Τώρα θα αρχίσω να ετοιμάζω και εγώ την βάφτιση της μικρής μας. / I can imagine and you did the right thing. I am sure that the little one was very tired. I have to start planning my daughter’s baptism as well.

E: Ναι να ξεκινήσεις νωρίς! / Yes, you need to get started soon.

D: Γεια σου Εμιλυ, η Δανάη είμαι! Τι κάνεις; / Hi Emily, Danai here! How are you?

E: Αχ, γεια σου Δανάη μου! Καλά είμαι,εσύ; / Oh hi Danai! I am good, you?

D: Πολύ καλα! Έχεις χρόνο το απόγευμα για καφέ; / Very good! Do you have time this evening for a coffee?

E: Ναι, αμέ! Τί ώρα λες; / Yes, sure! What time?

D: Κατά τις 6 είναι καλά; / Around 6, is it good?

E: Τέλεια! Στη γνωστή καφετέρια; / Perfect! At our regular coffee spot?

D: Ναι. Θα σε δω εκεί! / Yes, I will see you there

E: Φιλιά! / Kisses

[a few moments Later]

D: Γεια σου! / Heyyy

E: Γειαααα! / Hiii

D: Τι κάνεις; Καιρό έχουμε να βγούμε για καφέ! / How are you? Haven’t been out for a coffee for a while.

E: Πω πω όντως! Καλά είμαι, εσυ; / Po Po (greek phrase) indeed! I am good, you?

D: Πολύ καλά! Ήμουν άρρωστη την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα. / Very good! I was sick last week.

E: Αμάν! Τι είχες; / Oh no! What happened?

D: Είχα πυρετό, συνάχι, βήχα και πονούσε ο λαιμός μου. / I had a fever, a runny nose, a cough and a sore throat.

E: Χρειάστηκε να πας στον γιατρό; / Did you need to go to the doctor?

D: Ναι. Μου έδωσε ένα σιρόπι για τον βήχα, παυσίπονο για τον πυρετό και καραμέλες για τον λαιμό. / Yes, they gave me a syrup for coughing, fever reducer and cough drops.

E: Ακούγεται σαν να ταλαιπωρήθηκες πολύ βρε! / It sounds like you went through a lot.

D: Ε! Έτσι είναι όταν κρυώνεις.. / Em it is like this when you catch a cold.

E: Ε! Έτσι είναι όπως τα λες! Τώρα όμως είσαι καλά έτσι; Indeed you are right! Now you feel better right?

D: Ναι! Τώρα είμαι καλά! Πες μου εσυ τα νέα σου! / Yes! I am good now! Tell me your news!

E: Εμείς ετοιμαζόμαστε να πάμε εκδρομή στην Αθήνα. / We are getting ready to go on a trip to Athens.

D: Αχ! Τι ωραία! Μου αρέσει πολύ η Αθήνα. / Aaah! Nice! I love Athens.

E: Ναι κι εμένα! / Yeah me too!

D: Τι θα κάνετε εκεί; / What are your plans (for Athens)?

E: θα πάμε να δούμε το μουσείο της Ακρόπολης, θα πάμε θέατρο και άμα προλάβουμε θα πάμε και για ψώνια. / We are going to see the Acropolis museum, we will go to a theater and if we have time we will go shopping.

D: Μου έχει λείψει να δω θέατρο. / I miss going to the theater.

E: Μμμμ και εμένα πολύ! / Yeah same here

D: Για πόσες μέρες θα πάτε; / For how many days are you going?

E: Θα πάμε για 3 μέρες. / We are going for 3 days

D: Ε τότε πρέπει να βγούμε για καφέ όταν γυρίσεις να μου πεις πως περάσατε! / Then we have to go out for a coffee when you come back to tell me if you had fun.

E: Εννοείται! Αγάπη πρέπει να φύγω. Να προλάβω να ετοιμάσω τα πράγματα! / Of course! I have to go love. I have to pack the things on time.

D: Ναι ναι! Πήγαινε θα πληρώσω εγώ. / Yes yes! Go, I’ll pay.

E: Σε ευχαριστώ πολύ! Την επόμενη φορά θα πληρώσω εγώ! / Thank you! I’ll pay next time!

D: Ενταξει! Φιλία πολλά και καλά να περάσετε! / Okay! Many kisses and have fun!

In today's episode you will learn about the Greek carnival season and Clean Monday! Emily and Danae will first engage in a conversation organising Tsiknopempti's grill and then will explain various traditions regarding the period before the Lent.

E: Εμ Δανάη, πλησιάζουν οι Απόκριες και πρέπει να οργανωθούμε! Τι λες να κάνουμε την Τσικνοπέμπτη; / Well, Danai, Carnival is approaching and we need to get organised! What do you think we should do on Tsiknopempti?

D: Σκεφτόμουν, όπως κάθε χρόνο, να μαζευτούμε σπίτι και να ψήσουμε στην αυλή. Θα πάρω τα κρέατα από την Τετάρτη και θα μπορούμε να στήσουμε την ψησταριά από νωρίς. / I was thinking, like every year, we should gather at my place and grill in the yard. I’ll get the meat on Wednesday so we can set up the barbecue early.

E: Τέλεια! Εγώ θα φέρω τα ποτά τότε. Ρετσίνα, κρασί και κανένα αναψυκτικό. Α! Θα φέρω και τις πίτες. Πόσοι πιστεύεις θα είμαστε; / Perfect! I’ll bring the drinks then. Retsina, wine, and some soft drinks. Oh! I’ll also bring the pies. How many do you think we’ll be?

D: Ωραία! Λογικά θα είμαστε γύρω στα 10-15 άτομα. / Nice! We’ll probably be around 10-15 people.

E: Ο Κώστας θα ψήσει και στο μαγαζί; / Will Kostas be grilling at the shop too?

D: Εννοείται! Έχουν κανονίσει με τα άλλα μαγαζιά της γειτονιάς και θα στήσουν μία μεγάλη ψησταριά όλοι μαζί. Θα έχουν και Dj, οπότε θα κρατήσουν το πάρτυ όλο το βράδυ. / Of course! They’ve arranged with the other shops in the neighborhood, and they’ll set up a big barbecue together. They’ll also have a DJ, so the party will go all night

E: Τέλεια, οπότε αφού φάμε στο σπίτι σου, μπορούμε να κατέβουμε στο κέντρο για το πάρτυ. / Great, so after we eat at your place, we can head down to the center for the party.

D: Ωραία ιδέα! Τι λες να ντυθείς φέτος; / Great idea! What do you think you’ll dress up as this year?

E: Σκεφτόμουν να ντυθώ πιλότος. Εσύ; / I was thinking of dressing up as a pilot. What about you?

D: Φέτος λέω να ντυθώ μέλισσα. Έχεις κανονίσει τίποτα για Καθαρά Δευτέρα; / This year, I think I’ll go as a bee. Have you planned anything for Clean Monday?

E: Θα πάμε στο βουνό με την οικογένειά μου για πικ νικ. Θα φτιάξω ταραμοσαλάτα και ντολμαδάκια. Θα πάρω και λαγάνα, ελιές και ίσως κανένα ψάρι ή θαλασσινά. Θες να έρθεις μαζί μας; / We’re going to the mountain with my family for a picnic. I’ll make taramosalata and dolmades. I’ll bring lagana bread, olives, and maybe some fish or seafood. Do you want to join us?

D: Ναι, θέλω! Θα φέρω τον χαρταετό και θα φτιάξω μελιτζανοσαλάτα. Πώς σου φαίνεται; / Yes, I’d love to! I’ll bring the kite and make eggplant salad. How does that sound?

E: Τέλειο. Την ξέχασα την μελιτζανοσαλάτα. Επομένως κανονίστηκε. Τσικνοπέμπτη θα τσικνίσουμε σπίτι σου και Καθαρά Δευτέρα στο Σέιχ Σου. / Perfect. I totally forgot about the eggplant salad. So, it’s settled. On Tsiknopempti, we’ll grill at your place, and on Clean Monday, we’ll be at Seih Sou.

D: Ωραία. Άντε και Καλά Κούλουμα! / Nice. Well, Happy Carnival and Happy Clean Monday!
