The Social Dilemma
Last Exit on Mainstream
04/30/24 • 73 min
In which our heroes talk s*** about social media.
Repost from 2023
We've changed the format of the podcast since we first dabbled with it in 2023 but i feel like the conversations we had then are still very much in keeping with the general feel of the show and in particular this episode we recorded in March 2023 about the Netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma"...time may have moved on but the presence of social media and it's impacts continue
I (Rob Jones) sat down with Jamie Onolfo to watch the 2020 Netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma".
Rather than a scene for scene review of the documentary, this is a more of a conversation informed by the topics raised in the film.
We get into our history with various social media platforms and how our relationship with social media has changed over time and then some of the issues raised in the documentary - Addiction, Surveillance Capitalism, radicalisation, trolling and the impacts of social media on traditional media.
Finally we discuss what we think the future hold for a society so influenced by these platforms and also for the platforms themselves as the first waves of users grow older and the next generations come through.

"I Ain't No Bum" - Sylvester Stallone
Last Exit on Mainstream
04/16/24 • 33 min
In which our heroes talk s*** about the 2023 Netflix documentary "Sly"
In our first episode looking at Sylvester Stallone we focus on the documentary film Sly, produced by and released on Netflix in 2023 which catches up with our hero as he's moving house from LA back to his home town of New York and he's reflecting on his career and the body of work he's created over 50+ years on the silver screen. We'll look at his childhood and relationship with his father, his most iconic roles and his subsequent career which defines genres, creates the ultimate underdog and an almost 50 year franchise.
This is episode 1 of a 4 part miniseries in which we'll take a deeper dive into the Rocky-verse, look at the impact of Rambo on 80s Action Movies and look into what happens to a career when the star begins to fade.

"it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward" - Copland and the search for credibility
Last Exit on Mainstream
04/16/24 • 29 min
In which our heroes talk s*** about phoning it in, reboots and chasing critical acclaim
In our final episode about Sylvester Stallone we talk about what happens when a star begins to fade and after a run of financially successful movies in the 90s, Stallone goes looking for credibility with Copland. We look at other instances of career pivots and comebacks and also at Stallone's post Copland career of rebbots and sequels, before chatting about his recent run on TV with Tulsa King
This is the 4th and final episode in our Stallone miniseries... previous episodes have covered the Netflix documentary "Sly", the impact of the "Rocky-verse" and Stallone's place in the pantheon of 80s action heroes

"All I wanna do is go the distance" - Almost 50 Years of Rocky
Last Exit on Mainstream
04/16/24 • 23 min
In which our heroes talk s*** about Sylvester Stallone's most iconic character - Rocky
In this episode we dive into a movie franchise that has so far spawned 9 movies over almost 50 years and with more spin offs in the works, shows no sign of stopping. This week we get into the Rocky-verse!
So while Rocky famously loses the fight but wins the girl in the first film, he gets another shot at the title in Rocky 2, loses and reclaims the belt in 3, avenges the death of Apollo Creed in 4, retires and becomes a trainer in Rocky V, is brought out of retirement to lose an exhibition fight in Rocky Balboa before working with Apollos Son in the Creed series...on top of that theres a Creed 4 in the works, a Drago film, talks around Rocky 7 as well as a Rocky prequel series so it seems even nearly 50 years since the first film Rocky is still a license to print money.
This is episode 2 of 4 in our look at the career and impact of Sylvester Stallone, our first episode focused on the 2023 documentary film "Sly" while the remaining shows will look at 80s Action movies and then his somewhat fading star power

The Stone Masters of Dope Lake
Last Exit on Mainstream
04/23/24 • 14 min
In which our hero talks s*** about a plane crash which inspired a movie.
In this extra episode and companion to our recent Stallone series I wanted to expand on the story behind the movie Cliffhanger, which I briefly mentioned a couple of times in those episodes.
It's tale of a plane crash high in the mountains, of the world finest rock climbers and Hollywood's need to change absolutely everything!!
Climbing Gold - Dope Lake - a wonderful 4 part podcast about the events I briefly get into
Valley Uprising - A truly great documentary about the history of rock climbing in Yosemite Valley
