Land by Hand - Whole Systems Design + Buckminster Fuller
play

07/03/20 • 72 min

In this episode, I am highlighting the interdisciplinary work of Buckminster Fuller and his emphasis on whole systems design. His approach of doing more with less has had a huge impact on folks both within and outside of Permaculture Design practice - including myself long before I heard the word Permaculture, I learned about Bucky Fuller, Geodesic domes, the Whole Earth Catalog and the whole systems design movement of the early & mid 20th Century. I also really identified with his discipline of learning for oneself, from direct experience - He states that "man must learn to think for himself, rather than follow blindly what he has been taught." I hope enjoy another show digging into the roots of Permaculture...

About the Show:

  • 01:00 - 01:38: Intellectual Outlaw
  • 01:38 - 05:02: 3 Minutes w/ Bucky Fuller
  • 05:02 - 01:00:11: 1974 Interview
  • 01:00:11 - 01:08:15: Doing more with less
  • 01:08:15: - 01:11:57: Do your own thinking

R. Buckminster Fuller was a renowned 20th century inventor and visionary. Dedicating his life to making the world work for all of humanity, Fuller operated as a practical philosopher who demonstrated his ideas as inventions that he called “artifacts.” Fuller did not limit himself to one field but worked as a 'comprehensive anticipatory design scientist' to solve global problems surrounding housing, shelter, transportation, education, energy, ecological destruction, and poverty.

“I AM NOW CLOSE TO 88 and I am confident that the only thing important about me is that I am an average healthy human. I am also a living case history of a thoroughly documented, half-century, search-and-research project designed to discover what, if anything, an unknown, moneyless individual, with a dependent wife and newborn child, might be able to do effectively on behalf of all humanity that could not be accomplished by great nations, great religions or private enterprise, no matter how rich or powerfully armed.” —Bucky Fuller

Throughout the course of his life Fuller held 28 patents, authored 28 books, received 47 honorary degrees. Fuller's true impact on the world today can be found in his continued influence upon generations of designers, architects, scientists and artists working to create a more sustainable planet...Learn more, watch the videos from the audio clips, and get a free download of his book Grunch of Giants here >

Land by Hand - The Greater Reset | Exit and Build
play

05/23/21 • 72 min

Cultivate more freedom in your life and for those around you...This episode is an audio interview from the video: The Agorist Strategy of Exit and Build or Better Yet, Build and Exit - The Conscious Resistance & John Bush. This is an example of many inspiring talks to come from some incredible speakers in the 2021 Greater Reset Activation event on May 24-28, 2021. If you miss the live event, check out the videos afterwards.

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
Buckminster Fuller

The Greater Reset Activation is the world’s collective response to the World Economic Forum’s Initiative: The Great Reset. This is an alternative to the WEF’s top-down, centralized, authoritarian vision. The desire is to help all people find community and liberty by providing practical steps and knowledge for co-creating a world that respects individual liberty, bodily autonomy, and choice.

In this episode, I talk with David who is a dear friend, mentor & elder that has been very inspiring for us on our own journey of cultivating a creative and resilient livelihood that flows with the nature within us. He shares about his journey from growing up with artistic parents, to traveling the world on scientific field expeditions, refining his art + craft of professional nature photography, family homesteading, his deep love of the natural world, to publishing many books over the years to share these beautiful stories. Don’t miss this one...

David Cavagnaro was born and raised in California. He spent much of his childhood roaming the hills, exploring creeks, meadows and beaches, and backpacking in the mountains. Fascinated by insects and plants, he became intimately familiar with what he later called “the land of the small,” - by the age of l4 he had his first 35mm camera for recording what he found there. A decade of international travel as a scientific field worker, educational tourism leader, and photography instructor greatly expanded his knowledge of natural history opportunities to photograph. Photo assignments and seminar teaching led David to some of the most beautiful wilderness regions of the United States. His photographic work has become widely published in nature calendars and magazines, including Audubon, National and International Wildlife, Natural History, Ranger Rick, and Life., culminating in the publication of five books.

David is also the founder of the Pepperfield Project, a Non-Profit Organization located in Decorah, IA, promotes the health and development of body, mind, and spirit through food and gardening in harmony with nature. Pepperfield Farm serves as a living example of wellness, including an environmentally sensitive lifestyle and its symbiotic relationship with the surrounding community and natural ecosystems. The farm serves as an education and retreat center focused on wellness and the teaching of intelligent choices that support sustainable systems. In honor of our wintertime in our neck of the woods, we are focusing on different themes of making the most of long winter downtime in the Northern parts of the world. To start things off, we begin this series with introducing the concept of Slöjd (or Sloyd) which is a Swedish word that for many hundreds of years has referred to being self sufficient through the act of craft. Simple hand tools, simple techniques to build anything. Hear some interviews with several folks of the Scandinavian Slöjd tradition of woodworking and beyond to American, English & Japanese traditions as well.

"Slöjd is part of the self-sufficient household, how people survived before industrialization. Slöjd is the work method farmers used when they made tools for house building, farming and fishing, and objects for their household needs. For thousands of years, the knowledge of the material has deepened, and the use of the tools has evolved along with the understanding of how function, composition and form combine to make objects strong and useful. The word slöjd derives from the word stem slög, which dates to the 9th century. Slög means ingenious, clever and artful. It reflects the farmers’ struggle for survival and how it made them skilled in using the natural materials surrounding the farm: wood, flax, hide, fur, horn and me- tal. I have picked up a dialect expression from my home county, Västerbotten, that has become a personal motto. We say Int’ oslög, “not uncrafty,” about a person who is handy and practical. Slöjd in its pure self-sufficient use is characterized by an individual using simple tools with great skill, a deep knowledge of raw materials, and the ability to solve functional problems. The resulting objects are intended for the maker’s personal use." - Jögge Sundquist

It's that time of year to make some hay for the winter so we thought it would be a good idea to get into the weeds of making hay on a small-scale traditionally by hand. This episode is for all the folks who don't have the land or tractor to make hay on a larger scale, but want to mow their lawns, fields or meadows to make hay or bedding for their animals. In this episode, you can learn about different types of grass hay, alfalfa hay & tree hay for nutrients for livestock and of course, the methods of taking up a scythe and learning one of man’s oldest agricultural arts: cutting hay by hand and storing it loose for the winter. Hear from folks like Anarchy Acres, Jim Kovaleski, Tap o' Noth Permaculture Farm & more. Hope you enjoy!

"Let us make hay while the sun shines." - Proverb"If I'm honest, the thing I am proudest of is my varieties of wild flowers in the hay meadow." - Monty Don"A Song of the good green grass! A song no more of the city streets; A song of farms - a song of the soil of fields. A song with the smell of sun-dried hay, where the nimble pitchers handle the pitch-fork; A song tasting of new wheat, and of fresh-husk'd maize." - Walt Whitman

Land by Hand - Growing a Holistic Orchard + Michael Phillips
play

04/29/22 • 189 min

In this episode we are honoring the work & life of Michael Phillips, the 'beyond-organic' holistic orchardist, teacher, writer & consultant, who recently passed away. The audio in this episode is from the "Successful Biological Orcharding" workshop Michael facilitated in an organic apple orchard grown by Pat Tompkins. There is much wisdom to learn from Michael's lifelong legacy connecting with the biological world. To support Michael's work and his family, visit their memorial page here > Thank you! We hope you enjoy the nutrient-dense biological wisdom Michael has to share!

As above, so below. As below, so above. A diverse plant community bound by an array of mycorrhizal fungal species will form a 'common root being' throughout the orchard. The trees produce healthy fruit in accord with how we revere this sacred soil partnership. - Michael Phillips

Growing 'organic' has always been a given. Understanding how Nature does health fascinates me to no end. Working with biology and nutrition produces flavorful apples that are good for us. Compare that to the visually-pleasing orbs produced by toxic chemistry. That I choose not to certify our farm as organic with the USDA makes for good discussion over a glass of cider. Check out my network grower profile to better understand what a holistic orchardist does to bless up this earth. - Michael Phillips

Michael Phillips was a farmer, writer, carpenter, orchard consultant, and speaker. He lived with his wife, Nancy, and daughter, Grace, on Heartsong Farm in northern New Hampshire, growing apples and a variety of medicinal herbs. Michael is the author of Mycorrhizal Planet, The Apple Grower (Chelsea Green, 2005) and The Holistic Orchard (2011), and teamed up with Nancy to write The Herbalist’s Way (2005). His Lost Nation Orchard is part of the Holistic Orchard Network, and Michael also led the community orchard movement. Learn more at Grow Organic Apples > (bio from Chelsea Green Publishing)

People know in their hearts that our food can be good for us. That how that food is grown matters. That the people growing that food need to be supported. That local is indeed the answer. - Michael Phillips

Land by Hand - Natural Farming + Masanobu Fukuoka
play

05/22/20 • 54 min

This is the first of many shows exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else I can find. I will still continue to record interviews as frequent as I can with incredible folks, but these shows are going to be more about the elders and roots of this movement. I could not think of a better person to start with than a wise sage from Japan named Masanobu Fukuoka and explore what 'Natural Farming' is all about...

"The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings."

About this show:

  • 1:10 - 24:00: One Straw Revolution documentary about Masanobu Fukuoka - Credit: Rodale Press
  • 24:00 - 47:30: Masanobu Fukuoka and Natural Farming interview with Larry Korn - Credit: City as Nature
  • 47:30 - 53:40: Masanobu Fukuoka : The Limits of the Scientific Mind - Credit: Krishna McKenzie

Masanobu Fukuoka is considered a pioneer and father of the 'Natural Farming' movement. His ideas were also a leading inspiration for the concepts and principles of Permaculture. In this show I share some audio clips from different videos and interviews with and about Fukuoka explaining his natural farming philosophy. If you listen to this show in entirety, you will begin to understand his ideas extend much further beyond agriculture and apply to life and our relationship with Nature. Because of that, his unique approach has also been an incredible influence on our own relationship with Nature...Learn more and get a free download of his book, One Straw Revolution here >
