We're discussing X-Files : I Want To Believe (2008)
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
08/20/21 • 41 min
I was a MASSIVE X-Files fan back in 1994. As a young student, the whole flat used to get the beers in, camp out on the couch, eat Doritos, and dream of working a job with Gillian Anderson every Thursday night. Invariably we'd end up heading to the pub, discussing the episode, then staggering home at 1am because that's what students do.
Now, 27 years later, at the end of our Alphabet Movie Challenge, I found a way to revisit those glorious student days with my kids (without the excessive drinking and staggering). "I Want To Believe" is classic X-File storytelling - psychics, weird science, experimental procedures, and Mulder and Scully arguing over the validity of what they're doing.
We discuss the original X-files series, Pilot Episodes, Dr Isla gives us the low down on stem cells (its really interesting), getting up for school and Nieve nearly breaks down in tears at the thought of watching Top Gun....and it being good.

We're Discussing Gladiator (2000)
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
10/04/21 • 46 min
Once Upon A Time ...... There was a general, who commanded the Emperors armies, but when a new emperor rose, the general was cast down and became a slave, only to return to as a Gladiator, and seek vengeance for the wrongs done to him.
Sounds pretty bloody awesome!!
Nieve starts our TOP 100 Movie Challenge with the Oscar winning sword and sandals EPIC Gladiator. I love this movie. I saw it five or six times in the cinema when it came out because it had that big screen, classic movie look and feel, but is it still as amazing to today's teenagers? Does the subtle politics, the shifting mental state of the Emperor, and the gladiatorial action still stir the soul?
Costumes, camera crews, quotes, as well as new sections where have I seen them before, bang for your buck and cinema side dishes ..... and an appearance by Uncle Argyle.

Daddy tries to fix The Tomorrow War (2021)
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
09/08/21 • 28 min
The Tomorrow War does a descent job as a sci-fi film - it's not bad, but its not great. In short though, it's not $200million well spent. Would it have made back its budget in the cinema? We'll never know, but what could be done better?
Are there story issues that could be fixed?, SFX looking a bit ropey?, acting issues? In this episode Daddy casts his critical eye, and calls upon his film knowledge to try to improve, and 'fix' the Tomorrow War, and maybe even deliver a sequel or two!.

We discuss Total Recall (1990)
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
11/19/21 • 35 min
Once upon a time ...... A man went to have a memory of a holiday imprinted in his mind...and then Isla lost track of what was happening!! No seriously. She had NO IDEA what was going on!!It's still one of the greatest "is it real/isn't it?" movies of all time. Is Doug Quaid a construction worker having a schizoid embolism after having a memory implant, or is he actually a spy from Mars, sent to Earth to infiltrate the resistance on Mars after going for a memory implant that ERASES the previous memory implant.....wait - that sounds like Bullshit!!
In this episode, besides Isla getting annoyed at the film ending without explaining if its true or not, we discuss death by vacume, how the ozone layer works, how vape is one step up from Apple Juice (on for the 'young audience') and how to deliver the movies greatest line!!

We discuss Transformers (2007) and our Alphabet Challenge
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
08/31/21 • 44 min
Loads of stuff get's blown up, there's swoopy camera shots, massive robots, bad jokes, gratuitous 'Hot Girl' shots and a terrible plot - it can only be a Michael Bay film, so let the #Bayhem commence.
Daddy talk about his love for Gen1 Transformers and recounts Isla's birth. Nieve talks about how much she hates Transformers, and how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is so much better (yes, the Michael Bay produced one), and Isla talks sentience, war and George Clooney for President!!
For those of you that have listened regularly (we REALLY appreciate it), you will know about our alphabet challenge, and that this is the final letter of that challenge. We will be doing a recap/review episode later in the week, and discussing our next challenge there.

We're talking about The Lost Boys (1987)
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
10/18/21 • 35 min
Once Upon A Time ...... In an overly 80's Santa Clara, there was a Vampire problem.
Michael, who has just moved to the town with his family, meets David and his friends, who are not what they seem, all because he has the hots for Star. It's up to his brother Sam and the Frog Brothers, a couple of comic shop workers, to save Michael, and the town.
Everyone who was anyone in the 80's watched the Lost Boys. It was the definitive vampire movie of the decade....is WAS the 80's - we discuss how 80's it is!!. But how does it stand up against modern sparkly vampires, and against modern horror films - is it even considered a horror film.
As our TOP 100 Movie Challenge continues, we look at the fashion, the gore and talk about the music. Does this deserve to be on a 'Classic' film list?. Listen in and find out, and if you enjoyed the show please leave a review in Podchaser - it helps us grown and makes us look good. Otherwise please review us wherever you listen to us.

We're discussing Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
10/25/21 • 43 min
Once upon a time ...... There was a water ride at a Disney theme park that someone thought would make a good film (??!?!), so they grabbed a pen and some paper, and set about writing a script filled with curses, pirates, love and swashbuckling.
The film was very OTT, everyone loved the main character who was a drunken bum, there was indeed swashbuckling, rum, love, curses, pirates, rum and strumpets, and thus began a franchise.
This week, our TOP 100 Movie Challenge continues as we talk about Captain Jack Sparrow, Barbosa, Norrington, Turner, Swan, over inflated budgets and rum. Uncle Argyle tells us a story, we talk Bang For Your Buck and play Are you Not Entertained!!. Here's the handy link to our original episode on Pirates 1, 2, 3 (4 & 5). If you enjoyed either show please leave a review in Podchaser - it helps us grown and makes us look good. Otherwise please review us wherever you listen to us.

Daddy quickly reviews Martyrs Lane (Limited Spoilers) - an Edinburgh Film Festival Review
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
08/25/21 • 15 min
Back for a third time this week, and I'm talking ghost stories, but very much like The Devils Backbone, there's a mystery to solve along the way. Certainly more Supernatural Thriller then horror, but not in a The Conjuring type way. However in a very Conjuring 2 / Annabell Creation way, this film has great performances by the two young girls (Kiera Thompson &
Sienna Sayer) as both the ghost and the daughter solving the mystery.
Hat's off to Ruth Platt for a having a really interesting and original ending - I didn't see it coming, but then I'm thick. Don't worry though, its not spoiled, so go watch the movie first, then come back here and listen to the show.

We're discussing John Carpenters Halloween (1978)
Kids, what are we watching tonight?
10/31/21 • 65 min
Once upon a time ...... There was a boy called Michael Myers.
And he killed people!!.
This week, our TOP 100 Movie Challenge continues as we talk about one of the original slasher movies, and the film that created new type of horror 'monster'. Michael Myers has endured for over 40 years, but do the teenagers of today still find the original scary?. Do they understand its relevance to modern horror?. Do they care?
We talk about his first kill, his escape, how much driving he has to do, why women in the 70's didn't wear bra's, why no one uses light switches, and how the hell did Dr Loomis not notice his stolen car across the street!!!
