06/26/23 • 21 min
Lynn Schusterman is a Billionaire and the Founder and Chair Emerita of Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, which strives for a world where the United States and Israel live up to their highest ideals and achieve more just and inclusive societies.
Lynn has been active in Jewish communal and philanthropic affairs for over 40 years. She and her late husband, Charles, established their family foundation in 1987. Through her philanthropy, she has been recognized as a proud supporter of the Jewish people and Israel, as a leading advocate for the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect, as a champion of educational opportunities for all young people, and as a pioneering funder of inclusion and equality. Her work is grounded in a firm belief that we must all do our part to help repair our communities and our world.
Lynn served as Chair of the Schusterman family’s philanthropic work from 2000 until 2018, when she became Chair Emerita. Lynn prioritized building and supporting Jewish organizations dedicated to serving Jewish youth and young adults. These include BBYO, the leading pluralistic Jewish teen movement; Hillel, the largest Jewish campus organization in the world; and Moishe House, which supports young Jewish adults worldwide in turning homes into spaces for innovative and engaging community programming. She also helped to launch Repair the World, which mobilizes young Jewish adults and their communities through service and volunteerism, and is a leading philanthropist in the Birthright Israel program. Lynn also established an office in Israel, as well as three operating programs to engage influential young leaders: ROI Community, REALITY and the Schusterman Fellowship.
As a philanthropist, Lynn became an outspoken advocate for inclusion and equality, with a particular focus on the LGBTQ community in the U.S. and Israel. In 2010, Lynn made a groundbreaking decision to only fund organizations with formal non-discrimination policies that explicitly covered both sexual orientation and gender identity. She has also been a pioneering funder of the multi-disciplinary academic field of Israel Studies, believing that students deserve the opportunity to study modern Israel with thoughtfulness and intellectual rigor. Among her key investments were establishing the Israel Institute, as well as centers of Israel and Jewish studies at Brandeis University, University of Oklahoma and University of Texas – Austin.
In addition to her passion for shaping vibrant and inclusive Jewish life, Lynn focused on strengthening both Tulsa, OK, and Israel. One area of deep investment she pursued was investing in efforts to promote child welfare and safety. She helped launch both the Haruv Institute in Israel and Haruv USA at University of Oklahoma’s Tulsa campus to provide professional education and training for students and professionals who work with children and families to increase the identification, prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.
Lynn has written articles and opinion pieces for a variety of publications, including the Washington Post, Huffington Post, Jewish Week, JTA, eJewish Philanthropy and Tulsa World. On this episode, Host Krish Kumar sits down with Chris Helfrich, President and CEO of Stephen and Ayesha Curry's Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation (ELP), which he helped launch in July 2019.
With a mission to unleash the potential of every child, Eat. Learn. Play. is committed to bettering the lives of kids and families in Oakland, the Bay Area, and across the country. The organization supports children by fighting to end childhood hunger, ensuring students have access to a quality education and providing safe places for children to play and be active. To-date, Chris has expanded the foundation with over 30+ community partnerships including Kaiser Permanente, Workday, Salesforce, World Central Kitchen, and the Alameda County Community Food Bank. Additionally, he has played a pivotal role in facilitating the delivery of over 25 million meals to Oakland students and families struggling with food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to this, Chris served as CEO of the Starlight Children’s Foundation, the nation’s leading organization working to transform the hospital experience for millions of seriously and terminally ill children across the U.S. In this role, Chris oversaw the creation of two major, innovative programs which fueled Starlight’s success. First, Starlight Gowns, an effort to revolutionize children’s hospital gowns by replacing ugly, uncomfortable and embarrassing gowns with ones that are soft, comfortable, and a source of joy for the kids who wear them. Lucasfilm, Marvel, Major League Baseball and Disney are among the brands that have featured their iconic designs on almost 500,000 gowns that have been distributed to hospitalized kids since the beginning of 2017. Chris also spearheaded the creation of Starlight Xperience, a groundbreaking new program built in collaboration with Google that brings the magic of virtual reality to hundreds of children’s hospitals across the country. The inspiring program makes it possible for kids to be virtually teleported out of the hospital to almost anywhere in the world – or beyond – they dream to go. Chris made a significant impact in his time as CEO with a nearly 400% growth in fundraising and program spending for the foundation.
Before joining Starlight, Chris worked for the United Nation Foundation, where he spent over five years leading Nothing But Nets, the world’s largest global, grassroots campaign to defeat malaria. During his tenure, the campaign delivered more than five million life-saving bed nets and other malaria interventions to families across 30 sub-Saharan African countries, and served as a leading global health advocate on Capitol Hill, reducing global malaria deaths by 60%. While leading Nothing But Nets, Chris recruited Stephen Curry to become an ambassador for the campaign, and the two traveled together to refugee camps in Tanzania in 2013 and the White House in 2014 in support of the fight to defeat malaria.
Chris is a graduate of Trinity University where he was named Young Alumnus of the Year in 2018. He is a member of the Board of Directors for Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Leadership Council for Classy. He currently resides in the Bay Area with his wife, Kate, and three children.

Considered by many to be among the leaders of the game, D-backs President, CEO & General Partner Derrick Hall has turned the organization into a model franchise within the sports industry and throughout the business world during his 18 years at the helm of the club. Hall is the fourth-longest tenured CEO in Major League Baseball behind Atlanta’s Terry McGuirk, St. Louis’s Bill DeWitt Jr. and Cincinnati’s Bob Castellini, each of whom have a controlling ownership interest in their respective franchises.
Hall, a 2019 inductee into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, focuses the organization’s efforts in five areas he has called the “Circle of Success” - fan experience, performance, community, people & culture and financial efficiency - each of which has seen tremendous growth during his tenure. He has also developed the team’s B-U-I-L-D Values, which stand for belonging, unified, integrity, longevity and development, a series of beliefs to drive and motivate behavior and a framework for effective decision-making.
The success of the franchise during Hall’s tenure has led to numerous honors, while Hall’s leadership has helped guide the D-backs to three postseason appearances - two National League West Division Championships (2007, ‘11), one NLCS (2007) and the Wild Card (2017).
Hall and Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick hired Executive Vice President & General Manager Mike Hazen in October 2016 to oversee the franchise’s baseball operations and tasked him with remaining competitive at the Major League level, developing an analytics department and rebuilding the farm system to build a sustainable model. Entering the 2023 season, the D-backs’ farm system was ranked second by ESPN and fourth by MLB Pipeline and The Athletic, boasted at least four Top 100 prospects for the fourth straight preseason and were one of two teams, along with the Orioles, with three prospects in the Top15 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospect rankings.
With a focus on creating the best fan experience in all of sports, Hall has succeeded in accomplishing that goal at both Chase Field and at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, the D-backs’ Spring Training home near Scottsdale. Stadium enhancements at Chase Field that have taken place under Hall’s guidance include the APS Solar Pavilion, Guy Fieri’s Downtown Phoenix Kitchen + Bar, Caesar’s Sportsbook, Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers, HD scoreboard in center field, the Sandlot, the Coors Light Strike Zone, All-You-Can-Eat Seats, Casamigos Bar and DJ Booth, Commonwealth Infield Terrace, The Draft Room and value-item pricing at concession stands and Team Shop locations throughout the ballpark.
He and Amy reside in Arcadia and have three children, Logan (a Spectrum News reporter in Los Angeles), Hayden (leading a startup business in Salt Lake City that he created with friends, and a graduate of Duke University) and Kylie (a soccer player at Emory University), and two dogs, Ivy and Mayzie.

Episode 39: Rod Wood - Detroit Lions/NFL
Kickin' it with Krish
09/05/23 • 25 min
On this episode, Host Krish Kumar sits down with Rod Wood, the President and CEO of the Detroit Lions.
As Detroit Lions Team President and CEO, Rod Wood oversees all football and business operations of the Lions organization and reports directly to Principal Owner and Chair Sheila Ford Hamp. He was originally appointed Team President on Nov. 19, 2015.
Following organizational changes at the end of the 2020 season, Wood and Mrs. Hamp set out to establish a new leadership vision for the Lions. On December 15, 2020, Wood welcomed Lions Legend Chris Spielman to a formal role in the organization as Special Assistant to President/CEO and Chairperson. Together, along with Chief Operating Officer Mike Disner, the group began the process of bringing the right general manager and head coach to Detroit.
The thorough search for the Lions' new leadership tandem resulted in the arrival of Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell. Holmes was named executive vice president and general manager on January 14, 2021 after spending 18 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams (2003-20) in a variety of roles, including most recently director of college scouting. That same week, Campbell, a former tight end with 22 years of NFL experience, including 11 as a coach and 11 as a player, was named the team's new head coach.
Upon his initial hiring, Wood immediately began evaluating all business functions within the Lions and Ford Field. Concurrent with his organizational evaluation, Wood's "everything is on the table" approach to shaping the business affairs of the franchise has made a tangible and positive impact on the business operations for both the Lions and Ford Field on and off the field.
In his six years, Wood has implemented significant changes that range from day-to-day operations to new branding and has done so guided by a mission to improve the team's competitive financial position, fan engagement and overall customer experience. Wood has strengthened the Lions and Ford Field brands with improved business partnerships and more strategic alliances that positively influence business initiatives and provide necessary financial support to the club's football operations.
In February 2017, Wood unveiled plans for the first major renovation to the Detroit Lions' home stadium, Ford Field, since it opened its doors in 2002. The $100 million investment incorporated a complete overhaul of the audio and visual experience that featured new videoboards as well as a new state-of-the-art sound system. The stadium's premium spaces also received a complete makeover with expanded offerings to fans.
With the fan game-day experience a primary focus for Wood, his team also implemented a significant upgrade to the stadium's Wi-Fi and oversaw the return of a team cheerleading squad for the first time in four decades.
During this time, the team also unveiled a comprehensive rebranding initiative that emphasized the classic colors of Honolulu Blue and Silver. At the forefront of the team's rebranding and perhaps its most visible assets, the Lions' new uniforms, revealed in April 2017, now feature Home, Away, Throwback and Color Rush combinations. In 2021, the team also unveiled a white pant that is now included in the uniform combinations.
At the League level, Wood was appointed to and serves on the NFL's Investment Committee. For the eight years prior to his appointment as team president, Wood worked closely with the Detroit Lions organization and the Ford Family in his role as President and CEO of Ford Estates.
Prior to joining Wilmington Trust, Wood held an executive position with Comerica Bank where he oversaw 12 offices in four states
Wood graduated from Goodrich (Mich.) High School, and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan and a graduate degree from the ABA Graduate School of Commercial Banking.
