Kabir's Tech Dives
Kabir
I'm always fascinated by new technology, especially AI. One of my biggest regrets is not taking AI electives during my undergraduate years. Now, with consumer-grade AI everywhere, I’m constantly discovering compelling use cases far beyond typical ChatGPT sessions.
As a tech founder for over 22 years, focused on niche markets, and the author of several books on web programming, Linux security, and performance, I’ve experienced the good, bad, and ugly of technology from Silicon Valley to Asia.
In this podcast, I share what excites me about the future of tech, from everyday automation to product and service development, helping to make life more efficient and productive.

1-bit LLM Explained!
Kabir's Tech Dives
11/02/24 • 10 min
This episode discusses the emergence of "1-bit LLMs," a new class of large language models (LLMs) that use a significantly reduced number of bits to represent their parameters. These 1-bit LLMs, specifically the "BitNet" model, use only three values (-1, 0, and 1) for their weights, dramatically reducing computational cost, memory footprint, and energy consumption compared to traditional 16-bit or 32-bit LLMs.
This reduction in bit representation works through quantization, where the original weight values are mapped to these three values. This simplification leads to significant performance gains in terms of latency and memory usage while maintaining comparable accuracy to traditional LLMs. The video also highlights the potential of this technology to revolutionize the field of AI and make LLMs more accessible and efficient.

Is the Unplug Tag for You? | Regain Time from Screens
Kabir's Tech Dives
10/23/24 • 4 min
This episode is about a company called Unplug, which makes a tag (a small device) to control your smartphone addiction. The founders, Caroline and Yandri, address the growing concern about excessive phone use and its negative impact on well-being.
They argue that constant phone usage is impacting our mental health and the quality of our lives. Unplug's product, a physical tag that attaches to the back of a phone, helps users break the habit of mindlessly checking their phones. The tag restricts access to time-consuming apps, prompting users to engage with their devices consciously.
Unplug has seen significant growth and garnered positive feedback, with users reporting increased offline time and engaging in meaningful activities. The company is expanding its services to address family use and plans to develop a parental control feature to guide young people toward healthy digital habits.

Google Notebook LM Deep Dive: A Family Vacation Video
Kabir's Tech Dives
10/04/24 • 6 min
I wanted to see how Google Notebook LM does with videos. Knowing Google is behind both Notebook LM and YouTube, I figured it would have an easy time with this task. It did. It did an excellent job of analyzing the video.
The video is mostly Bengali, which was nothing for Google Notebook LM. It figured out the deep-down details of the family video and discovered the tonality of the video so well that it is shocking!
Here is the video:

Many of my friends—about 39 of them—were on a week-long group trip to Yellowstone. I shot the video and narrated the ending but used Bengali songs (generated by AI), and the Notebook LM just nailed my deep thoughts, which were embedded in the video.
I can not tell you how good of a job it did! It was awesome!

Google Notebook LM Deep Dive: Kabir's Own X Profile
Kabir's Tech Dives
10/04/24 • 3 min
The Notebook LM from Google is simply a game changer. It gives me reasons to believe that Google is ahead of everyone in the AI race. Sometimes, we techniques who know a thing or two about AI companies and their widgets think that Google and Apple dropped the ball when Microsoft led the race by joining forces with OpenAI. I was shocked in the early days—about two years ago—that OpenAI used Google's transformer technology to beat Google to its own tech dominance game.
Google has had many failures with AI. I do not use any of their AI products directly. I tried all the goodies like Gemini Advanced to Google Docs AI integration, and they all sucked severely.
However, a day ago, I discovered a killer app from Google: Apple Grade and Beyond. The poorly named product in the experimental stage—Notebook LM—is a game changer.
It allows any creator, like me, to validate what we have been doing with something we are passionate about. For example, I am building many tools for founders, from taking public notes to using AI to manage projects most passively. Users who have no idea where to find these tools must validate them. However, I can use Notebook LM to dive deeply into my product data/contents and see how the AI sees my offerings.
This will allow creators, founders, and marketers to have a third-party, deep-dive analysis of their offerings, from marketing content to actual product videos and pre-usage validation, which will allow more tweaking and refinement of the offering. This is a game-changer!
No, this is not just to paste my PDF to ChatGPT and get a read from it. It is beyond that. Google got the mojo!
Google: Go collect $200
OpenAI: DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT $6B
Microsoft: WAIT FOR OPEN AI

Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, proposes the concept of social business to address societal issues by creating businesses that prioritize social impact over profit. He distinguishes social business from traditional profit-making businesses and philanthropy. Social businesses are non-profit, non-dividend companies that reinvest their earnings back into the business to expand their reach and impact. Yunus argues that social businesses offer a sustainable and impactful way to address social problems compared to traditional philanthropy, which is a one-time act of giving.
He uses Grameen Danone, a yogurt company that provides fortified yogurt to malnourished children in Bangladesh, and Grameen Veolia, a water company that provides clean drinking water to villages in Bangladesh, as examples of successful social businesses. He believes that social enterprise can inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs to focus on creating positive change in the world.

Notebook LM: The Lean Startup | Build, Measure, Learn Loop
Kabir's Tech Dives
10/07/24 • 8 min
The book "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries, explores the principles of lean startup methodology, arguing that traditional business planning and execution methods are inadequate for navigating the uncertainty of innovation. The book emphasizes the importance of validated learning, rapid experimentation, and building minimum viable products (MVPs) to gather customer feedback and adapt to changing market conditions.
It outlines a process of "build-measure-learn" and introduces concepts like "pivot" and "innovation accounting" to help entrepreneurs make data-driven decisions and achieve sustainable growth. The book also explores the dangers of large batches. It highlights the benefits of small batches for faster feedback and iteration, illustrating its ideas with examples from companies like Toyota, Groupon, and Intuit. It concludes by emphasizing the need for a new kind of stock exchange focused on long-term value creation and advocating for a shift in entrepreneurial thinking to embrace uncertainty and continuous experimentation.
