199 - Protecting Kids' Plates: Battle for Better School Food w/ Congressman Mike Kennedy
Just Ingredients
04/22/25 • 62 min
In today’s episode, Congressman Mike and I dive into the details of the Healthy Lunch Kids Act, discussing its importance in providing healthier school lunches free from harmful artificial ingredients.
The Importance of Healthy School Lunches: Congressman Kennedy shares his passion for improving school lunches, emphasizing that the food our children eat directly impacts their focus, learning, and overall health. He highlights how many kids are consuming excessive amounts of sugar and artificial ingredients, which can lead to behavioral issues and hinder their academic performance.
The Legislative Process: We discuss how a bill gets passed in Congress. Congressman Kennedy explains the steps involved, from sponsorship to committee reviews and ultimately to the President’s desk. It’s a lengthy and often challenging process, but understanding it empowers us as citizens to engage and advocate for the changes we want to see.
Overcoming Opposition: One of the most surprising aspects of our conversation was the pushback that healthy food initiatives face, even when they seem like common sense. Congressman Kennedy discusses the financial interests that often oppose such bills. It’s a reminder that while we may think everyone wants healthier options for our kids, there are significant hurdles to overcome.

187 - Healing the Soil to Heal our Health w/ Rob Herring
Just Ingredients
01/27/25 • 57 min
In today’s episode, Rob and I discuss the connections between soil health and our personal health. Here are three key takeaways that I think you'll find interesting:
Did you know the health of our soil directly impacts our health? Rob explains how microorganisms in healthy soil are vital for nutrient exchange with plants. Prioritizing quantity in agriculture has reduced nutrient density in our food, but regenerative practices can restore its nutritional value.
Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, is not just harmful to the environment; it also poses risks to our health. Rob discusses how glyphosate disrupts the soil microbiome, which in turn affects plant health and ultimately our gut health. With rising concerns about gut-related issues and chronic diseases, it's crucial to be aware of what we’re consuming. Choosing organic and non-GMO foods can help reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals like glyphosate.
Rob highlights the concept of "forest bathing," which involves immersing ourselves in natural environments to reap mental and physical health benefits. Studies show that just a couple of hours in nature can boost our immune system and improve our overall well-being. In a world where many of us spend over 90% of our time indoors, reconnecting with nature is more important than ever.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! Tune in now to learn more.
