Turkey Hunting Primer with Mark Hall
John Schneider's Wild Life
02/09/23 • 46 min
Remember the episode of Schitt's Creek where they take David turkey hunting? I think I'm more prepared than he was, but perhaps not.
This episode is about me getting ready to hunt wild turkey for the first time in my life. I have next to no idea what calls I need or how to use them, and that's just the bare minimum of what I need to know.
It's about time I had Mark Hall on my show, and the timing is perfect as I begin to get ready for April 15, the opening day of the Merriam's Turkey season in BC. Mark is the host of the Hunter Conservationist Podcast and has been pursuing these birds in the hills around his home for more than two decades. He also offers a masterclass on hunting turkeys in the ponderosa pine ridges of southern BC. That course is available here. Mark's knowledge of turkey biology and behaviour, and how to put them on his table, is matched only by his enthusiasm.
The two of us will be hiking a pre-dawn rocky mountain ridge on opening day, shock-calling for roosted turkeys, and I simply cannot wait. There is much to prepare and this episode goes a long way to help with that task.
Part two of this episode will come out on Monday, Feb 13, 2023. Big announcement coming up shortly on a new way to reward subscribers with free Food Afield gear! Support the Food Afield Podcast, become a member subscriber today!

Lake Trout Ice Fishing
John Schneider's Wild Life
03/24/21 • 33 min
Kevin Kossowan and I head out to the Rocky Mountains in mid March to backpack, camp and ice fish for the elusive Lake Trout of Spray Lakes. Kevin filmed episode 1 of season 8 of his award winning series, From The Wild; and, then we recorded enough material for a decent little Food Afield podcast episode! Fishing for Lake Trout, and especially ice fishing for them is a difficult process at Spray Lakes. Actually, the process itself isn’t what is hard, being successful at harvesting any fish in this lake is the real problem. But, we seemed to figure it out near the end of the trip, in true fashion for most of our outings.

November Whitetails with Kevin Kossowan
John Schneider's Wild Life
12/25/21 • 54 min
Kevin and John spend November trying to connect on whitetails with their rifles. This is the Season 4 premiere episode! The hunts take place in both the agricultural fields surrounding Edmonton, and the familiar boreal forest ‘Bush Camp’. The wood stove crackling in the wall tent on chilly November evenings helped make this episode so memorable.

Fly Fishing Alberta’s Foothills with Tom Stewart
John Schneider's Wild Life
08/25/21 • 53 min
A quick overnight fishing trip to a favourite stream. 4 species hookups, and the best day of fly fishing I’ve ever experienced. I think we hit 41 fish landed between both of us. Interesting to note that on the second day, while euro nymphing, I managed to catch a couple more fish than Tom. His technique of nymphing was a definite game changer for me.

Traditional Bowhunter's Life with David Tetzlaff
John Schneider's Wild Life
03/06/23 • 66 min
David Tetzlaff is my guest on this episode of the Food Afield Podcast. David is the co-editor of Traditional Bowhunting Magazine and a heck of a nice guy! His work background and adult-onset hunting career are fascinating. We have a great conversation about getting started with the trad-life and the magazine.
You know it's going to be a good episode when Beka Garris, Ted Nugent, TJ Conrads, E. Donnall Thomas, and Tarzan's stunt double all come up in casual conversation! How to get started in traditional bowhunting and so much more on this episode.
