New Horror Movies Ep. 007: Hung Like an Ingrown Hair
Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies
04/11/22 • 364 min
When you peer into the mirror, do you like what you see? What about when you just get out of the shower? That probably depends a great deal on your age... Here in Episode 007 of Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies, we talk about the increasing appearance of Naked Old People in Horror movies! Sure, we got that dilapidated “dish” in Room 237 in “The Shining” (1980). But the appearance of saggy and baggy bods has surely ticked up in frequency over the past decade with films like, “REC 2” (2009), “The Taking of Deborah Logan” (2014), “The Visit” (2015), “The Witch” (2015), “Hereditary” (2018), “Midsommar” (2019), “It: Chapter Two” (2019), “The Dark and the Wicked” (2020),”Amulet” (2020), and of course, that brings us to our big Feature Review of Ti West’s “X” (2022)!
In addition to the new Ti West flick, in Episode 007 your favorite Horror hosts also bring you reviews of The Exorcism of God (2022), Umma (2022), Off Season (2022), You Are Not My Mother (2022), and Bhoothakaalam (2022). And as part of our usual, genre-defining PSAs, we even briefly discuss a couple a couple of non-Horror movies, namely, Deep Water (2022), Beneath the Surface (2022). Also in Episode 007, Jay of the Dead reveals the unforgettable true story of how Dr. Shock earned the nickname, “Back-Door Becker.” We also read an email from Candela, our Norwegian high-school student friend, who responds to our hosts’ answers (from Episode 006) to her question about American Horror movies influenced by the Cold War. Some of the boys were “deep in their cups,” as they say, while recording this episode, so our coherence may waiver somewhat from segment to segment.
And of course, you will get seven, Horror-themed Specialty Segments from each host, including Jay of the Dead’s It Could Happen to You Horror, Dr. Shock’s Macabre Film History, Gillman Joel’s Horror Lagoon, Mister Watson’s Horror Hierarchy, The Dead Zone with Dr. Walking Dead, GregaMortis’s Monsters on the Mantle, and Horror in Black and White by Mackula! Join us! (P.S. Sorry this episode was so damn late in releasing.)

Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies
09/17/23 • 309 min
For those who aren’t aware, here on Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies, our nine Horror hosts record frequently (pretty much weekly, in fact) and throughout the year, as they are available. This dynamic recording process allows us review Horror films in various combinations of co-hosts, like a revolving door of renegade reviewers, resulting in a veritable Horror Magazine in Audio Podcast form! Plus, sometimes it takes us (read: Jay) awhile to release certain portions, so the segments here in Episode 064 were recorded anytime between the end of 2022 to present!
In this episode, we discuss Horror movies like Malum (2023), Death Spin (2022), Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023), Final Exam (1981), Urban Legend (1998), The Grove (2023) and Blood (2023)! During this show, you’ll also hear an in-depth review of Poltergeist (1982), with special guest Dahlia Schweitzer, author of “Haunted Homes.” We also bring you Mackula’s new Interview With Vampires segment, as well as our brand-new, Official Contributor Kagan “Fruit Brute” Breitenbach with his new segment The Midnight Music Society. Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies
08/08/22 • 120 min
Can Dan Trachtenberg’s new Predator prequel, Prey (2022), live up to or exceed the other installments in the franchise? We know about bone tomahawks, but is there a Patent Pending on a boomerang tomahawk? Can Dr. Shock hold his bladder long enough to review one movie? Did the lovely Comanche ladies of the 18th century wear Maybelline before hunting animals? Can Mackula live with the production company’s branding on the film’s title card? And will Jay of the Dead become the Armond White of his own podcast? You can find out by listening to this raucous Episode 014 of Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies, The Berserk Baboon of Horror Podcasting. During this episode we bring you a quick overview of our thoughts on the “Predator” franchise. We bring you a Feature Review of Prey (2022). (Unless you’re extremely committed to knowing as little about a film as possible, you can listen freely because we do not reveal major plot spoilers. However, we do speak about situations in the film, without revealing major story beats or outcomes.) Then we wrap up this episode with an extended Specialty Segment of Gillman Joel’s Horror Lagoon, where Joel discusses the charm of Nightmare in Blood (1977)! Join us!

Children mostly survive in movies ... mostly. Happy Halloween this month! Here in Episode 023 of Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies, the Halloween Horror Avengers fulfill a request by listener and friend of the show, Revolver_Benji (part-time musician, full-time badass), who asked if we’d Feature Review Alien3 (1992)! So, five of your nine hosts — Jay of the Dead, Dr. Shock, Mister Watson, Dr. Walking Dead and Mackula — spend about an hour giving you a SPOILER-FILLED, deep-dive discussion of the infamous, third installment of the Alien franchise. However, you might be as surprised as our hosts because this time around they found a lot more to appreciate about Alien3. Dr. Walking Dead leads the charge! Jay explains why Alien3 is by far the darkest, most brutal alien film. Mackula enlightens us on the differences between the theatrical cut and the “assembly cut.” And of course, we talk about David Fincher’s disenchantment and distancing himself from the film after suffering studio interference.
