Dr. Ginger Charles discusses "Police Pursuit of the Common Good"

06/11/20 • 68 min

Jason Zuk, The Social Psychic Radio Show and Podcast
Dr. Ginger Charles, a Retired Police Sergeant, discusses her book, "Police Pursuit of the Common Good: Reforming and Restoring the Police Community." In her book, Dr. Charles examines the current issues facing law enforcement and marginalized communities like the Black Community. She presents reasons why our police communities appear to be in constant conflict with marginalized communities for the last several years. In the book, Dr. Charles explores the behaviors in the police culture from a social psychological perspective, illustrating the importance of understanding police behaviors in order to change the culture of conflict. It is her experience as a police officer that provides the reader with a unique understanding from inside the police community and as an observer of that community. Dr. Charles concludes with potential solutions to reform and restore the police culture, as well as heal the divide between our communities and the police. Dr. Ginger Charles worked as a police officer in Colorado before retiring in 2013. Dr. Charles received her PhD in Health Psychology from Saybrook University in 2005, while working as a police sergeant. Her profession of policing and dedication to service lead her to explore how to help police officers build resilience and inner strength. Having worked as a police officer for almost three decades, she has a unique understanding, “living in the petri dish,” of the trauma and hardships that police officers and police leaders encounter daily. Her research is focused on identifying solutions to help police officers survive and thrive in their careers and beyond, while maintaining their mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. In addition to her research, Dr. Charles teaches psychology courses at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California.

Emadi Okwuosa, a Civil Rights Activist and a Leader of The Protests in Tampa Bay

In this episode, Jason speaks to Emadi Okwuosa, a recent 2020 graduate from the University of South Florida and a Civil Rights Activist, Civic Leader, and Champion for Social Justice and Reform. Emadi is a part of the new movement for change that we are witnessing across the United States and around the world which calls for an end to racism, police brutality, hatred, and discrimination. Jason met Emadi recently during a peaceful protest that Emadi organized in the city of Tampa, Florida. The Tampa Police Department (TPD) arrested Emadi during one of these recent protests, and TPD alleges that Emadi was using a bullhorn “to incite a riot," which is a Felony under Florida Law. A petition has been circulated on Change.Org to demand that these charges be dropped immeidately, since Emadi was merely exercising his Constitutional Right to tackle the problem of systemic racism as a citizen. This petition has electified an outpouring of support for Emadi online! In a few days time, Change.Org has gathered almost 57,000 signatures on Emadi's behalf. A copy of the Petition can be found online at: https://www.change.org/p/tampa-mayor-jane-castor-demand-emadi-okwuosa-s-charges-get-dropped. I encourage each member of our audience to review and sign this Petition. Even though it is 2020, if we close our eyes and review this information critically, we might feel like it's 50 years ago. Progress has been hampered and change is needed NOW. Join us as we discuss the importance of this Movement and its impact on the world today.
