Episode 21: Pot Noodle - Woodstock (August 14th 2019)
'Three Days of Peace, Love, and Pot Noodles
'
This episode:

We get stuck in traffic on the way to Woodstock, 50 years too late!

Jeremy reveals his superpower: being able to identify minor rock stars by a glimpse at the back of their heads, and Vince gets all misty-eyed about that time when he was thirteen and went to a Dr Who thing at Longleat. Jeremy remembers an obscure 70’s US sitcom that had John Travolta giving attitude to a teacher, Vince rages against Joe Cocker and unleashes the retributive ire of hardcore Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes fans, and both of us get on the phone to Operation Yewtree after deciphering the lyrics of a well dodgy Milf song.
As Jeremy hopes that Graham Nash will one day sing the theme to The Generation Game, Vince prematurely kills Jerry Garcia, and laments his certain lack of luck with sexually free young hippie women of the late 60s, had he been around then, which he wasn’t.

The artists we discuss and rate this show are Arlo Guthrie, Grateful Dead, John B Sebastian, Bobby Goldsboro, and Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young), with mentions of Woodie Guthrie, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Santana, Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, Manassas, Oasis, Frank Sinatra, The Sex Pistols, and The Clash.

play

06/18/19 • 77 min

Episode 20: Glen Campbell’s Existential Nightmare (June 18th 2019)
'The podcast with no regrets. Literally.'

This episode:

We tumble back in time to 1975, where we find Starsky and Hutch being politically incorrect on a voodoo island populated by porn actresses, and the Bay City Rollers in the grip of a tartan mania. Jeremy insults everyone in the north, Vince wonders if anyone named Glen could ever be cool, and we both fail to remember JD Souther.
As awfuls come over the phone, our supergroups go to war, and Jimmy Tarbuck begins his existential Jaques Brel phase, we liken the lead singers of The Eagles to the worst people in the world as chosen by Viz Comic, and express much appreciation for David Soul, the Alan Parsons Project, and bikinis.

The artists we discuss and rate this show are Pilot, The Eagles, Glen Campbell, and Scott Walker/The Walker Brothers, with mentions of David Essex, Jackson Brown, Linda Rondstadt, The Bay City Rollers, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Mick Jagger & Marianne Faithful, The Alan Parsons Project, Steve Harley, Phil Spector, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Episode 11: Keeping it Real (May 18th 2018)
'Much has been said of the Vince Stadons of yore
Of chat-fests and podcast shows by the score
But I sing of a Jeremy Wall we adore
The podcast overrater'.

This episode:
The Wicker Man:
Vince and Jeremy discuss the 1973 British folk horror classic, which they first saw thirty years ago, and keep returning to, and as Vince proposes a range of Wicker Man merchandising, Jeremy sets in motion a diabolical evil scheme to improve his home-grown rhubarb.
Vince wonders if Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen has ever used his celebrity status to officially endorse a punningly named Indian Restaurant; Jeremy explains why Britpop darlings Oasis are just too basic and way too madferitourkidlike to be taken seriously; we speculate as to what The Beatles might have played at Live aid; we ponder the appeal of Steve Winwood; and our Overrated supergroups do battle once again.
The artists/bands rated and discussed are The Pierces, Deep Purple, Oasis, and Nirvana. We also speak about Manfred Mann and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band (in Deciphering the Lyrics), Doves, Medieval Babes, Traffic, Blur and Britpop, Weather Report, Paul Giovanni, and Bruce Springsteen.

Episode 10: The Dickie Davies Fight Club - NYC SPECIAL (April 14th 2018)
'The first rule of the Overrated Podcast is: You don’t talk about the Overrated Podcast.'

This episode: NEW YORK SPECIAL!
We don fedoras and sunglasses, and scoff hot dogs and bagels as we are joined in the Overrated Studio by old school pal and New York resident Neil Barret, who chooses a selection of great songs pertaining to his adopted city.
As the three of us ponder the majesty of Daley Thompson’s Olympic moustache, and try to picture Sid Vicious attacking Whispering Bob Harris, Jeremy invents a new wrestling move, Neil gets annoyed at the egregious lack of specificity in America’s lyrics, and Vince confiscates the word ‘the’ from ‘the’ New York Dolls.
The artists/bands rated and/or discussed are Odyssey, Carole King, New York Dolls, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, and America, with passing mentions of The Sex Pistols, Crass, Fleetwood Mac, ELO, Television, Mariah Carey, The Beastie Boys, Free, and Breakestra.

Episode 5: Ghosts are Bullshit! (October 20th 2017)
'Listen to them, the children of the night'.
This episode: HALLOWEEN SPECIAL!
In this spooktactular edition of what’s been called “the scariest podcast ever recorded” by bull**** ‘medium’ Derek Acorah (not really; just like him, we’re making it all up), Jeremy adopts a new non de plume for his Rock and Roll Name and accidentally insults the state of Texas; Vince solves a centuries old murder case by identifying pretentious middle-class totty actor Martin Shaw as Jack the Ripper, and confesses he’s never been to Wigan (Vince, that is: not sure about Martin Shaw – perhaps he can let us know in the comments section); and both friends fondly reminisce about their school days at a mediocre Comprehensive when they bossed the second-rate teaching staff into letting them write and film a terrible video adaptation of Dracula, which nonetheless was considerably better than the one made by Francis Ford Coppola fifteen years later.
The artists/bands rated and/or discussed are Warren Zevon, R Dean Taylor, Talking Heads, Michael Jackson, and Classics IV.

Episode 27: The Power of Don Corleone Compels You! - Film (31st August 2020)
‘The Podcast, or El Podcasterino, that’s not into the whole brevity thing.'
As Jeremy takes his annual holiday to Summerisle, Vince and Neil stock-up on exorbitantly priced popcorn and drinks and sneak off to the movies to watch some old favourites. Vince discusses the eee eee eee eees and tinkly tinkly tinkly tinkly tinks of late 70’s/early 80’s horror film synth scores, and reminisces about being tangentially involved in a pirate film smuggling operation from Amsterdam, and as Neil finds himself in the middle of a Dudester cult that drink White Russians and abstain from bowling on the Sabbath, he rhapsodizes over Michael Mann’s blue colour wash, and the music revolution ushered in by the Sony Walkman.
Then, both men try to rate Paul McCartney on an LSD Spectrometer, and take a juicy bite of Forbidden Fruit.

The films we discuss:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The Big Lebowski

The Exorcist

Manhunter

Magical Mystery Tour

The artists we discuss and rate on this show are Burt Bacharach and BJ Thomas, The First Edition, Mike Oldfield and Iron Butterfly. As always, The Beatles are our final topic of discussion.

Episode 22: Interchangeable Lovelies - Numbers (October 27th 2019)
'Proud Supporters of Shepton Mallett FC'
This episode:

We hold up two digits to our listeners as we play the numbers game!

We determine the standard distance pop stars are prepared to walk to see their lovers; Jeremy explains why he automatically rejects any emerging or rediscovered artists who are popular and acclaimed until he’s had plenty of time to think about it; Vince invents a giant-slaying football team for a nondescript rural west country village; and as we reinvent Martin Shaw as a vet who blows the lid on global conspiracies involving injured field mice, we take bogus physician Dr Hook to task for his shallow values and tedious paranoid behaviour.

The artists we discuss and rate this show are The White Stripes, The Magic Numbers, Dusty Springfield, and Vanessa Carlton.

Episode 30: The Last of the Analogues - Christmas Special (December 30th 2020)
'The Podcast that looks to the future now, it’s only just begun'
This episode:

Vince fuses the growly voices of Jimmy Saville, Chris Rea and Barry White into a terrifying unholy trinity, and wistfully recalls the nose-biting, toe-nipping harsh winter of 1982 and the smell of his Dad’s single malt whisky as they watched together the Dave Allen Christmas Show late into the night; Neil reprimands Led Zeppelin for not being festive enough, ponders the weighty issue of the generation gap between the Analogues and Millennials, and muses on the currency of shared cultural experiences like the spectacular double-issue Radio Times, Christmas Number Ones, and getting plastered in pubs you otherwise avoided the rest of the year.
Jeremy finally returns from his mysterious sabbatical to immediately compare Johnny Mathis to Kim Jong-Il, Supreme Leader of North Korea from 1994 to 2011, wax lyrical about his childhood Christmases, and lament the melancholy ending of the season as symbolised by the remaining, unwanted and unwrapped hard and chewy golden toffee in the otherwise empty and forlorn Quality Street tin.

And we say goodbye to the old and ring in the new as we look ahead to exciting changes to the show in the coming year.
