Comedy writer, songwriter and actor

This week, Ira spoke with comedy writer, songwriter and actor Bruce Vilanch. In this eclectic (and hilarious) episode of Ira’s Everything Bagel, Bruce talks about his connection to the comedians of the Catskills; his move from the East Coast to Ohio and on to Hollywood; writing for the Academy Awards shows, Joan Rivers and Bette Midler; his relationship with his mother, who adopted him and just recently finding his birth mother; whether the deli will survive; raising funds for charity, including AIDS; why he loves writing and performing, but never wanted to be a producer; aging out in Hollywood; collaborative writing vs writing by yourself; and his new project (a musical), featuring an imaginary Dolly Parton (but with the real Dolly Parton music).

One of the most sought-after jokesmiths in the entertainment industry, Bruce has become a recognizable face in his own right, thanks to the feature-length documentary “Get Bruce!” (1999) and his one-time stint as a regular on “Hollywood Squares” (1998), for which he ( Bruce Vilanch ) also served as head writer.

He began contributing to Academy Awards telecasts in 1989, collaborating with the likes of Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and David Letterman, and graduated to head writer in 2000. He has roasted celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and President Clinton. His resume also includes “You Made Me Watch You,” the touching Emmy-winning valedictory Midler crooned as a send-off to Johnny Carson.

Author, Take a Shot at Happiness: How to Write, Direct & Produce the Life You Want

This week, Ira spoke with Emmy Award winning producer Maria Baltazzi, author of Take a Shot at Happiness: How to Write, Direct & Produce the Life You Want. In this happy episode of “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Maria talks about her epiphany while acting as supervising producer of “Survivor”; her journey in self-reflection and exploring her own happiness; everyone’s untapped potential; why she looked at the chapters in her book as a series episode; why action is important; the benefits of journaling; how her book differs from other books on the subject; why she wanted to write a book relevant to her background; how pictures of one thing a day brought her joy; why she considers herself a happiness explorer; how the key to happiness is choice, followed by action; and why happiness can also be defined as resilience.

Maria Baltazzi has climbed the 15,000-foot trail (46 miles) to Machu Picchu, led African safaris, and summited Mt. Kilimanjaro twice among her other adventures. But it was a small television stage lit by tiki torches in the middle of the jungle in the South China Sea, that gave her pause. As supervising producer of CBS’s Survivor for seven seasons, one of the longest-running unscripted series on television, Maria had a front row seat to this bold new era of television filled with drama, tears, machinations, and revelations. While watching the contestants, she had her own epiphany.

Utilizing her own experience as a producer, she channeled her energies into building a healthier state of being for herself and had fun while doing it. Her creative use of her cell phone to chronicle her story, a natural idea for a heartfelt storyteller who made her living envisioning life in snapshots, and her extensive studying, led her to develop a unique viewpoint and path to peace and happiness.

This week on Ira’s Everything Bagel Podcast, host Ira Sternberg sits down with Deviant Ollam, a renowned physical penetration specialist known for breaking into buildings, gated communities, and “impenetrable” server rooms to test their security. In this unlocked episode, Deviant Ollam shares his journey into the world of security, the intricacies of his profession, and valuable insights into the importance of both physical and psychological security.

From Curiosity to Career: Deviant Ollam’s JourneyBecoming a Physical Penetration Specialist

Deviant Ollam’s fascination with security began at a young age. Over the years, this curiosity evolved into a career as a physical penetration specialist. His primary role involves testing the security of companies and organizations by attempting to breach their defenses. Ollam explains that his goal is often to get caught, providing valuable feedback on the effectiveness of existing security measures. His work highlights how vulnerable many systems are, despite appearing secure.

The Importance of Locks in Society

Symbolic and Functional Roles of Locks

In this episode, Deviant Ollam discusses the dual roles that locks play in society. On one hand, locks serve a symbolic purpose, sending a message that certain areas are off-limits. On the other hand, they provide a tangible layer of security, protecting valuable assets and ensuring privacy. Ollam emphasizes that while locks are essential, they are not infallible and should be part of a comprehensive security strategy.

Low-Tech Security Solutions

When Simplicity Wins

Deviant Ollam advocates for low-tech security solutions, noting that sometimes simplicity is the most effective approach. High-tech systems can be vulnerable to sophisticated attacks, whereas basic, low-tech measures can often provide robust protection. Ollam shares practical advice on inexpensive and effective security tools, such as the best item to use for securing a hotel room.

The Difference Between Being Secure and Feeling Secure

Psychological Aspects of Security

A key topic in this episode is the distinction between being secure and feeling secure. Deviant Ollam explores how psychological factors influence perceptions of safety. He argues that true security involves both physical measures and a sense of well-being, emphasizing that individuals and organizations must address both aspects to achieve comprehensive protection.

Books and Resources by Deviant Ollam

President, 3 Axis Advisors

In this enlightening episode of Ira’s Everything Bagel Podcast, host Ira Sternberg delves into the complex world of prescription pricing with Antonio Ciaccia, the president of 3 Axis Advisors. Known for his deep expertise in the pharmaceutical industry, Antonio discusses the findings of a groundbreaking study conducted by his company, which explores how prescription prices are set. This episode uncovers the intricate role that Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) play in determining the prices consumers pay at the pharmacy counter and raises important questions about the transparency and fairness of the current system.

Read The Full Transcript Watch Full Podcast Video

The Role of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) in Prescription Pricing

Understanding PBMs and Their Influence

Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) are intermediaries in the healthcare system that manage prescription drug benefits on behalf of health insurers, Medicare Part D drug plans, large employers, and other payers. In this episode, Antonio Ciaccia explains how PBMs, which were originally introduced to help contain drug costs, have evolved into powerful entities that often do the opposite. The study conducted by 3 Axis Advisors revealed that the overwhelming majority of prices paid by consumers at the pharmacy are based on price points established by these PBMs. This means that rather than negotiating lower prices, PBMs often contribute to the inflation of drug costs.

The Broader Ecosystem: Overpaying for Brand Drugs

Why Are Consumers Overpaying?

One of the key findings discussed by Antonio Ciaccia is the phenomenon of overpayment for brand-name drugs. In the broader ecosystem of drug pricing, consumers are often forced to overpay due to the complex and opaque pricing strategies employed by PBMs and health insurance companies. Ciaccia explains that these entities frequently set higher prices for brand drugs, which can result in significant out-of-pocket expenses for consumers. This overpayment is further exacerbated by a lack of transparency in the pricing process, making it difficult for consumers to understand why they are being charged such high prices.

Health Insurance Companies and PBMs: Cost Containment or Cost Inflation?

The Role of Health Insurance Companies

Health insurance companies are supposed to act as a check on drug prices, ensuring that consumers get the best possible prices on their medications. However, as Antonio Ciaccia points out, the reality is often quite different. Instead of containing costs, health insurance companies, working in tandem with PBMs, often contribute to the inflation of drug prices. This is because PBMs and health insurers can benefit from the higher list prices of drugs through various rebates and fees that are not always passed on to consumers. This practice creates a perverse incentive for PBMs and insurers to prefer higher-priced drugs, even when cheaper alternatives are available.

The Call for Transparency and Ending the Anti-Kickback Exemption

Proposing Reforms

In response to these troubling findings, Antonio Ciaccia advocates for greater transparency in the drug pricing process and calls for an end to the exemption to the anti-kickback law that currently allows PBMs to receive rebates from drug manufacturers. This exemption has been a key factor in the misaligned incentives that drive up drug prices. By eliminating this exemption and increasing transparency, Ciaccia believes that the market can be reformed to better serve consumers, ensuring that they are not overpaying for their medications.

Antonio Ciaccia’s Background and Expertise

From Pharmacy Technician to Industry Leader

Antonio Ciaccia brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role as president of 3 Axis Advisors. His journey began as a pharmacy technician, where he gained firsthand experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He later pursued dual degrees in communications and political science from The Ohio State University, which paved the way for his career in research and association management. For several years, Ciaccia led government affairs for the Ohio Pharmacists Association, where he became a vocal advocate for drug pricing transparency.

Author (with Jess Oppenheimer), Laughs, Luck...and Lucy: How I Came to Create the Most Popular Sitcom of All Time

This week, Ira spoke with Gregg Oppenheimer, son of “I Love Lucy” creator-producer-head writer Jess Oppenheimer, and coauthor of his late father’s humorous memoir, Laughs, Luck...and Lucy: How I Came to Create the Most Popular Sitcom of All Time. In this “Splain that if you can” episode of Ira’s Everything Bagel, Gregg talks about why he left his law firm to finish his father’s memoirs; his close relationship with his father; how people came together from live television, radio, and film to create the sitcom, which resulted in new techniques adopted by the industry; how Jess Oppenheimer had the good business sense to negotiate to own twenty percent of the show; how Lucy and Jess formed a working relationship after a rocky start; Gregg’s father appearing in a “Hitchcock” cameo on a “Lucy” episode; and the moment Gregg realized how his father created what became the defining character for Lucy.

Gregg Oppenheimer, son of “I Love Lucy” creator-producer-head writer Jess Oppenheimer, got his start in comedy at the tender age of four, when his dad introduced him to Lucille Ball on the set of I Love Lucy. Kneeling down, a smiling Lucy asked Gregg, “Where did you get those big brown eyes?” Gregg’s deadpan reply: “They came with the face.” Lucy nearly fell over laughing.

In 1996, he left a successful law career to finish his late father’s humorous memoir, Laughs, Luck...and Lucy: How I Came to Create the Most Popular Sitcom of All Time. The book’s success led to Gregg’s 2018 hit comedy play, “I Love Lucy: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Sitcom,” starring Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy) and Oscar Nuñez (The Office) as Lucy and Desi.

Gregg also produced the multi-award-winning “I Love Lucy” DVDs for CBS. He has lectured on broadcasting history at the University of Southern California, Brown University, Hofstra University, Northwestern University, and the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago.

Gregg’s Facebook page and YouTube channel feature many of his own unique “Online Radio Theatre” video productions, including a Burns & Allen show starring Rich Little as Jack Benny, and “Playing Both Sides: Jack Benny vs. Fred Allen,” written by Gregg and featuring his father’s 1930s comedy routines.
