The death of a Gen-X icon 30 years later. Memories of Old Country Buffet plus tips on how to be a meat carver. Some heavy-hitting stores that closed in the 1980s and 1990s. The legacy of TV Guide magazine.
Episode 139 of the podcast runs the gamut from heavy to light but is filled with nostalgia.
30 years ago this week the world of music, the world of pop culture, and a generation overall, lost a giant. Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, was found dead in his home. The moment sent shockwaves through Generation-X and changed the trajectory of Grunge and Alternative music forever. This week we will look at the death of Kurt Cobain and why it was such a massive moment in music history.
On the other end of the spectrum in nostalgia, we go way Back In the Day and reminisce about Old Country Buffet. Not only are we going to share some fun memories of eating until we nearly exploded, but we're also going to review a classic training video that features the ins and outs of being a meat carver at Old Country Buffet.
Giants of business that have faded away will be the topic of this week's Top 5. We will focus in on some famous stores that closed during the 1980s and 1990s.
In a new This Week In History and Time Capsule we will look back at the creation and legacy of TV Guide magazine.

Episode 68 falls the day before Friday the 13th and this spooky day is intertwined throughout the show.
It begins with a somewhat creepy tale, though more sad and unfortunate. The West Barnstable Brick Company was a giant of Cape Cod business for more than half a century. Today all that remains are the bricks themselves which are collector's items, an overgrown area hiding bits of the old factory, and the story of what happened.
The town of Hull, Massachusetts is a crown jewel of the South Shore. Though small in actual size there is so much packed in to every bit of it. Beaches, old forts, carousels, high-class hotels, beautiful ocean views, delicious food and so much more. Find out all about it on this week's Road Trip.
The Friday the 13th franchise has been scaring audiences for more than forty years. There has been a dozen films and Jason Voorhees has become a horror icon. However did you know that in the 1980's there was an early attempt at a Friday the 13th video game? Made for the Nintendo this game promised to bring the slasher series to the video game medium. We go Back in the Day to see if it lived up to the hype.
There have been many larger than life bands from the Grunge and Alternative genre in the 1990's. There have also been some that burst on to the scene and then faded away. This week's Top 5 looks back at some of those lesser known bands and the music they created.
There's also a new This Week In History and Time Capsule looking back at the eradication of smallpox.

Let's go back to the mall!
In Episode 173 we are traveling back inside the hallowed halls of the indoor shopping mall.
Back in Episode 129, we looked at some of the popular, beloved, and maybe some lesser-known mall stores that attracted customers, or perhaps at least hordes of wandering mall rats during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Well, now we're back for Part 2!
A visit to the mall was always a special and exciting time back in the day. Although the indoor mall is still a popular destination today, its heyday was definitely the '70s through the '90s.
You didn't need much money as the 'mall rat' identity only required you to be inside a mall hanging out with friends. Kids of the day could spend hours sitting on benches or wandering the corridors looking into some of the stores that will be mentioned this week.
How many of these stores did you spend hard-earned money at?
If you think any of your favorites have been left out, listen to Episode 129, maybe they're over there!

AI choosing the best 1980s professional wrestlers? Nostalgic grocery store trips? The internet is now retro? No, it's not a side effect of the Thanksgiving food coma, it's Episode 122 of the podcast!
We kick off the episode with a look back at a Southern New England staple of decades past. For those in the area of a certain age, Angelo's Supermarket was destination shopping. From its beginnings in the Tedeschi family and from under the thumb of Stop and Shop, Angelo's carved out its own legacy that is still fondly looked back upon even thirty years after its name was erased from history.
You've heard of middle children, but middle towns? This week's Road Trip showcases Middletown, Rhode Island. The actual 'middle town' on Aquidneck Island, it is passed through by thousands headed to and from Newport. However, it is filled with attractions, both natural and other, and is deserving of its segment this week.
Despite it feeling like it's still a new thing, the internet has been going strong for more than a quarter century. For all of the improvements that it has undergone, there were some major growing pains when it first came around. This week we go way Back In the Day to look back(fondly?) at some of the laughable, annoying, head-scratching, and downright baffling internet trends and fads of the 1990s.
Never has there been a Top 5 like this. A new wrinkle in this segment debuts this week. In addition to my own top 5 list, I am enlisting AI in the form of ChatGPT. We will battle it out in the first Me v. AI Top 5 as we look at the best 1980s professional wrestlers!
There will also be a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule featuring Alice's Adventures In Wonderland.

Episode 63 starts with a trip down memory lane. For more than four decades The Paddock in Hyannis was home to great food and great music. Whether it was in house singers and musicians, or celebrities filtering in from the neighboring Cape Cod Melody Tent, there was always something going on there.
Our Road Trip segment takes us to the Green Mountain State and Brattleboro, Vermont. Covered bridges, farms, farmers markets, beautiful scenery, and more make us this charming New England town.
We go way Back In the Day and learn the struggles of being a kid in the 1980's and 1990's and needing to use the telephone. Personal smartphones were a long way off. Back then it was typically one phone, mounted to the wall, with little to no privacy.
A brand new Top 5 showcases the movies that remind me of my sisters. We all grew up in the 1980's and 1990's so nostalgia will be high on this list.
There's a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule as well.
Be sure to watch for my livestreams called Without A Map Friday's at 8pm on Instagram which serve as a sort of postgame show for the podcast. Find them on IGTV after they've finished.

Lucky Episode 13 of the podcast begins with the story of The Outermost House in Eastham, Massachusetts. The tiny dune shack known as Fo'castle was where author Henry Beston lived for a year and wrote of life on Cape Cod's Great Beach. But what of the shack after the book was written? We explore that here.
Take a trip way Back in the Day to Chuck E Cheese's 'where a kid can be a kid.' Born from the mind of a video game pioneer this chain has had its share of tremendous ups and downs since debuting in 1977 and is actually as strong as its ever been currently. Reminisce about pizza and skeeball and horrifying animatronic animals.
The capital of Connecticut, Hartford, is the subject of this episode's Road Trip. Learn some of what makes this city a great spot to explore, and a few of the lesser-known attractions.
Finally This Week In History shines a spotlight on St. Patrick the man, Nevada legalizing gambling which gave birth to the casino hubs of Reno and later Las Vegas, plus more fun topics!

Episode 24 starts off with a special interview. Mason Pryme is a highly-rated, award-winning chef. He is now plying his trade at the Cleat & Anchor in Dennis Port. He shared why this is his favorite place he has worked thus far and why you should come visit(Hint: Smoked BBQ, a huge craft beer list, live entertainment)
For decades a looming hulk sat out in Cape Cod Bay. Though it is not visible anymore the SS James Longstreet still resides off the coast of Eastham, just underneath the waves. Learn all about Cape Cod's target ship, how it got there, and why the bombings of it stopped.
Most generations have a fairly common line of demarcation. Generation-X, Millenials, Baby Boomers, most know when these generations began and ended. However for Gen-X and Millenials there is a bit of an overlap. What of those born in that time period? You might just be something called a Xennial, and I'll explain what that is.
This Week In History includes the opening of the first drive-in theater and more. There is also a special birthday related Time Capsule as well.
Also be sure to check out my livestreams called Without A Map Friday's at 8pm on Instagram which serve as a sort of postgame show for the podcast. Find them on IGTV and YouTube after they've finished.

50 years ago in July 1974, Ruth Marie Terry, the woman who would be known as The Lady of the Dunes for most of that time, was murdered and left in the remote dunes of the Province Lands in Provincetown, Massachusetts on Cape Cod.
Longtime listeners of the podcast know of my connection to this case. I wrote a book, Searching for the Lady of the Dunes, which I released in February 2023. I was deeply connected with the Lady of the Dunes documentary produced by Frank Durant.
Before that, I grew up with the story of the Lady of the Dunes living on Cape Cod. I could never have imagined being even a peripheral part of the eventual solution to this infamous case.
As the 50th anniversary of this event has arrived, I wanted to try to give a crash course in all things Lady of the Dunes. For the last year-plus, I have been giving talks about the case, the documentary, and of course my book. This here is a sort of abridged version of what those who come to my speaking engagements hear.
For those who are unfamiliar with this case and my involvement. If you end up wanting more I have several videos I made during my time working on the book, as well as Frank’s documentary, all available on my YouTube channel.

Hello subscribers!
It's March, spring is arriving. The sun will bring some warmth and so will a new subscriber-only bonus episode of the podcast! This is the 6th monthly installment in the series where I review a blog I had written called Initial Impressions which I began in 2010.
For those who might be new here, this blog was meant to be a behind-the-scenes look at my travel trips but ended up as a fever-dream mix of random quotes, predictions, observations that would make Seinfeld proud, and some actual looks into the places I was visiting.
In February love was in the air as I navigated around such random topics as: why mosquitoes love me, celebrity MySpace interactions, quarter-life crisis issues, crying over sports, and a Rubik's Cube of a shower.

For March the wackiness shows no signs of slowing down as I look at subjects such as: dinner and a show at Subway, am I Jim from The Office, or am I the NFL, insects causing auto accidents, faux sports outrage, Crocodile Dundee in Rockport, MA, and more!
These episodes might be a unique and sometimes embarrassing look into my psyche nearly fifteen years ago, but they are undoubtedly worth sharing with you, my most loyal subscribers!
Thank you so much for subscribing to my channel and enjoy this sixth episode of the exclusive members-only podcast.
Check out the YouTube Channel of DJ Williams whose music is used in both the main and subscriber podcasts!

An AI Therapist? A Pixelated Talking Parrot? Ruining the Lives of Sims? These are just a few of the possibilities one could have found 30 years ago during the rise of the MS-DOS computer game. Episode 128 of the podcast will reminisce about some legendary titles that helped pave the way for the modern wonders of gaming.
Mill Hill in West Yarmouth on Cape Cod was a haven of entertainment for nearly a century. The Mill Hill Club is the most well-known establishment while the Mill Hill Pavilion was the original. Sandwiched in between was a spot that was both a novelty and a success story. The Mill Hill Arena spent nearly 40 years supplying Cape Cod with world-class professional wrestling and amateur boxing. Learn its story this week.
When it comes to fast food, not all chains are created equally. For every McDonald's and Wendy's that has become ingrained in society, countless others might have had success but ultimately faded away. This week's Top 5 looks at discontinued fast food chains. Whether as big as any chain ever, a relative flash in the pan, or too ahead of its time, many different roads led to these chains ending.
There is also a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule featuring one of the most infamous crimes of the 20th century. The Black Dahlia murder was equal parts sad and gruesome, and surprisingly Elizabeth Short has a connection to New England.
