6. Dr. Google, Anxiety, and Sustainable Self-Care
Impostrix Podcast
08/23/23 • 31 min
It might be too early in the Impostrix Podcast journey to deviate from the plan, but it's happening anyway, and in this episode we are talking mental health. Specifically, Whitney recounts her recent experience with perfectionism, anxiety, and self-care. And a word of warning, Dr. Google is not our friend.
Recalling our conversation in Episode 3 on imposter syndrome and identifying Dr. Valerie Young's five types of imposter syndrome, Whitney finds herself living squarely within "perfectionist" one day, and "super human" the next. A reality experienced by many, and especially by Black women, and a reality that in this case led Whitney to experience persistent physical manifestations of underlying mental stress and anxiety. In hindsight, Whitney sees how her anxiety spiral developed and shares perspective on red flags that were present for her.
Grateful for the strong community of support that she has built around her, Whitney called on all of her resources to identify what she was experiencing, to calm her anxieties, and to establish a short term plan of self-care moving forward. Whitney shares how through this experience, she has a better understanding of how anxiety shows up for her and what physical signs of anxiety she experiences. She also walks listeners through her process of exploring and identifying sustainable self-care rituals to alleviate stress and care for her mental wellbeing.
It is so important that we, Black and Brown folks, protect their energy. And this means caring for their mental wellbeing, no matter what. If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or any other mental illness, please know that you are not alone, nor are you broken, cursed, or being punished. Communities of support are available to you and it's never to late to reach out.

What does racial aggression look like in a "professional" work environment? How can I protect my peace, my energy, and my mental health in work situations that involve racial aggression? How do we balance sticking up for ourselves with our professional duty to the individual causing us harm? In Part 2 of the Sista Circle Episodes, sister/friend Sarah shares her personal experiences of racial aggression and imposter syndrome in her legal career. She recounts a shocking incident in court and the challenges she faced as a woman of color navigating a predominantly white legal environment. Rhonda and Whitney share their experiences with white people commenting on their appearance, and the sisters/friends talk about some options we have when these situations happen.
Those options include addressing the behavior head on, making light of the behavior and keeping it moving, and ignoring it all together. Each response has it's own benefits and drawbacks. Which do you use?
The podcast discusses strategies to protect mental health and confidence while confronting racial biases and microaggressions in the workplace. Listeners will gain insights into conflict resolution, self-empowerment, and finding support in professional settings. The episode highlights the importance of self-advocacy, protecting energy when we can, and moving forward in our power. We are not alone, and we will not be gaslit!

3. What is Imposter Syndrome Anyway?! Learning How to Identify Imposter Experiences As We Navigate the Workplace
Impostrix Podcast
08/01/23 • 29 min
What is imposter syndrome? How can I identify it in myself? Are there types of imposter syndrome? Do People of Color experience imposter syndrome differently than White people? How do I overcome or leverage imposter syndrome?
In this solo episode, Whitney discusses imposter syndrome answering all these questions and more. Whitney draws on her personal experience to give examples of how imposter experiences show up for her and how it intersects with race. She explains the five types of imposter syndrome identified by Dr. Valerie Young: the perfectionist, the expert, the natural genius, the soloist, and the super person. Whitney highlights the consequences of imposter syndrome, such as anxiety, depression, shame, and procrastination.
In discussing the intersectionality of imposter syndrome and race, Whitney highlights the term "imposter treatment," introduced by Elizabeth Leiba in her book, I'm Not Yelling: A Black Woman's Guide to Navigating the Workplace. Whitney also discusses how the systemic exclusion of People of Color from opportunity creates present-day environments of non-belonging.
To overcome imposter syndrome, Whitney suggests leveraging it by never stopping learning, proving doubters wrong, dressing the part to boost confidence, preparing and visualizing success, releasing the ego, embracing imperfection, and avoiding comparisons with others. She emphasizes the importance of accepting oneself, celebrating achievements, and embracing individuality.
The Impostrix podcast offers valuable insights and tools to cope with imposter syndrome and promote self-validation and growth. 29. Building a Career After Incarceration with Waleisah Wilson
Impostrix Podcast
04/10/24 • 62 min
Whitney is joined by Waleisah Wilson, a friend and colleague, in this really real episode on what it is like navigating life and career after incarceration.
Waleisah Wilson is a dedicated criminal justice reform activist and organizer. She staunchly supports efforts that address disability justice, ending solitary confinement and mass incarceration, voter disenfranchisement, ending the stigmas associated with having a criminal record and eliminating the unjust barriers to reentry. Her passion stems from her personal struggles with reentry and is the reason why she founded NewLife Second Chance Outreach, Inc., a nonprofit organization that addresses the lack of direct employment services for those with criminal convictions.
In this candid conversation, Whitney and Waleisah discuss the systemic issues surrounding mass incarceration, the importance of language in humanizing individuals with criminal records, and the need for grace, forgiveness, and compassion in our communities. They highlight the impact of racial capitalism on employment opportunities for people of color and the barriers faced by those with criminal records.
Through personal anecdotes, Waleisah sheds light on the need for change in how we view and support individuals reentering society. This episode challenges listeners to rethink their perceptions and consider actionable steps to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community.
Waleisah holds two Master’s degrees, one in Human Services and one in Nonprofit
Management, and a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice. She is the owner of two small businesses, Phoenix Recruiting & Employment Services, LLC., where she provides recruiting services to employers, training and business consulting services to those seeking to start their own small business or nonprofit organization, and Beautiful Pride, an ecommerce apparel store that allows its customers to support grassroots social and criminal justice organizations through its collection purchases.
Tune in to this thought-provoking episode of the Impostrix podcast to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by formerly incarcerated individuals and the importance of providing opportunities for successful reentry and employment.

43. Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Audacity: Lessons from a Legal Tech Entrepreneur
Impostrix Podcast
08/28/24 • 57 min
In this episode of the Impostrix Podcast, I sit down with Kisha Brown, Esq., the founder and CEO of Justis Connection, the first black attorney referral network in the country. Kisha shares her journey of being a practicing attorney to transitioning into the world of legal tech entrepreneurship. We discuss the importance of creating a community, the challenges and unexpected positives of being an entrepreneur, and the significance of seeking professional support in the business world.
Here are three key takeaways from our conversation:
1) Having the Audacity of White Men: Kisha and Whitney marvel at the audacity of white men who are totally fine faking it until they make it and compare to the critical eye and high standards Black women face from ourselves and others. What if we had the audacity of white men? How would we move in our careers and what risks would we take?
2) Creating Community and Identity: Kisha highlighted the importance of creating a supportive community in any space you choose to be in. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who understand your journey can provide comfort and confidence in the identities you've taken on.
3) Balancing Motherhood and Entrepreneurship: Kisha shared how being an entrepreneur has given her the flexibility to balance motherhood and work. The ability to own her time and make decisions that align with her family's needs has been a significant positive outcome of her transition.
4) Fortifying Yourself as an Entrepreneur: Kisha emphasized the need to fortify oneself as an entrepreneur, especially in the face of challenges and uncertainties. Building resilience and self-support is crucial for navigating the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

We are continuing the conversation with guest Karla Garcia! Karla is a bicultural and bilingual mental health therapist from Washington state. In Part 1, we discuss Karla’s personal experiences with imposter syndrome, racism, and colorism within immigrant communities and other communities of color. We also discussed how Karla’s cultural values inform her business model.
What is your racial or cultural identity? In this episode, Whitney and Karla discuss the complexities of identity and how labels can be used to categorize people. They explore the racial gaslighting and the erasure of experiences and identity that can happen as a result of racial stereotypes and societal expectations around what a ______ [insert racial or cultural group here] looks or acts like. We are reminded that white supremacy does not need white people.
What does success look like in your culture? Karla shares about how her mother's view of success included her education, marriage, and family. However, others in her community sometimes attribute her success to her husband's achievements, undermining her individual accomplishments. Whitney shares her perspective on success within the Black American community, where Black American women often carry all the family responsibilities in part due to the over policing of Black and Brown bodies leading to the absence of large numbers of Black American men in the household. Both hosts discuss navigating the sometimes-present conflict between individual success and cultural expectations, and reveal challenges of finding individual ideals of success.
What does success mean to you? For Karla, success involves her ability to maintain freedom of thought and a sense of self not attached to friends, family, or career. For Whitney, it involves self-awareness, alignment with values, and striving towards personal goals.

Black women encounter unique challenges in the workplace, particularly concerning likability and stereotypes that can significantly impact their professional experiences. In this episode, Dr. Katrina Gipson joins Whitney to explore how Black women are often forced to navigate misogynoir - hatred or prejudice against Black women - and how this shows up in the workplace.
Pulling from personal experience with health care in Georgia, Whitney and Dr. Gipson start by discussing medical racism. The conversation then shifts to the subject of one of Dr. Gipson's article titled "Black women don't owe you likeability," and the pair explore how Black women are expected to be likable in the workplace. They are judged based on their friendliness, approachability, and ability to make others feel at ease.
Black women face penalties for not meeting these likability criteria. Penalties that become apparent in performance reviews and promotion decisions, and are noted with coded language like "not being a team player," "needs improvement in proactivity," and "could show more enthusiasm for her job." This can create a hostile work environment where Black women feel pressured to conform to certain expectations to avoid negative outcomes.
The episode underscores the importance of allyship and solidarity in addressing the challenges faced by Black women in the workplace. It is crucial for individuals, especially those in positions of power, to actively support and advocate for Black women, challenging stereotypes and biases as they arise.
Dr. Gipson emphasizes the necessity of creating inclusive work environments where Black women can be themselves without fear of judgment or backlash. By prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and ensuring that all voices are valued and respected, organizations can work towards dismantling harmful stereotypes and fostering a more equitable workplace.
Dr. Gipson's message to listeners: you are enough and you are worthy.
