345 Samhain and the Change of Seasons with Jenny Mulak and Beth Carestia of The Goddess Party
i want what SHE has
10/22/24 • 107 min
Today I got to sit down with two of the Goddesses from The Goddess Party, Jenny Mulak and Beth Carestia. We talk about the turn of the seasons and what arises for us as we move through Autumn into the dark of Winter. Other topics on the show today, piercing the veil, Samhain meaning and rituals, Goddesses, Divine Feminine, ancestors, tarot and archetypes. Get your tickets for the next The Goddess Party performance on November 1st at Basillica Hudson before they're gone...
Jenny Mulak is a healer, a problem solver, an herbalist, flower practitioner and energy worker, a writer, a recovering rule follower, and a curious student of spiritual teachings. Jenny is the founder, alchemist and earth steward behind Cosmic Mother - a botanical skincare and herbal potions line - handcrafted with plants from her garden and local farms. She is delighted to make her home in Shokan, NY with her partner, Ariel, and their two rescue pups.
It is here that she recovered from her years of corporate life - where she was good at her job as a program manager, but never satisfied as she wasn't even close to being aligned with her life’s purpose. As she continues to strip away years of programming and societal and familial conditioning, the plants support her every step of the way.
Nature has been Jenny's greatest teacher and healer. She is passionate about sharing with others how living in harmony with the cycles of Nature can connect us back to ourselves and the embrace of the cosmos and Mother Earth.
Beth Carestia has been living in the Kingston area for over a decade and has come to love our sweet community. She’s a proud Rosendale Ukulele Group member and an O+ alum with The Goddess Party. Most recently she hosted the O+ Comedy show, a major personal highlight. Also know as a local Tarot Reader and an all around shenanigan having woman, she brings joy wherever she goes.

337 NeeNee Rushie "Big Takeover Band"
i want what SHE has
08/27/24 • 106 min
NeeNee Rushie grew up in Jamaica where her mom and her 3 sisters raised her. She’s always been very touched by music and songs from a very early age. She sang in church and school choirs since the 4th grade- when she discovered that she had a talent for singing and performing.
NeeNee moved to NY in 2003 and went to college in New Paltz in 2005 where she met the original drummer and Rob (their current bass and musical director) that same year. The band would form in a couple of years. Since then, they have released 5 full length studio albums, a couple live EPs, performed all over the country and experienced countless strange and unforgettable moments. The band has had some line up changes over the years. Some wonderful musicians have come and gone. Rob, Chas and NeeNee are original members. Guthrie, Manuel, Roger and Ryan have been on board for several years now. The band operates like a family. They play reggae-ish, ska-ish, world-ish grooves, sprinkled with some soul-ish nuggets.
When NeeNee became a mother, their strategy changed from playing tons of shows, to being more picky about the shows they play. She realized that she was going to have to make the same or stronger impact, but by playing less shows. NeeNee’s daughter really regenerated a new love for the band in her. Her daughter has taken a major interest in the band and their music, and that has given NeeNee a new perspective. She’s never felt more passionate about the band and is feeling prouder of what they have done, and more confident about what they are working on.
https://www.bigtakeoverband.com/
On today's show NeeNee shares about her childhood and the music that she was surrounded by while living in Jamaica and what it was like leaving her home and her mama. We talk about her process for writing and collaborating with the band, being a woman in a male dominated industry, and listen to a few songs and hear what they mean to NeeNee. Of course, we also talk about motherhood, how that's impacted her and the band, and how they are evolving as a result. They have two local shows coming up. First up is at The Falcon on September 28th and then The Linda in Albany on October 26th.
Here's the Tarot reading that I shared from Nikki Foggerty. "I bring love and compassion to myself and embrace all the possibilities that lie ahead.. "
We listened to a song from Amber Rubarth who will be a guest on the show Sept. 9th. She's also playing this benefit...Neighbors for Neighbors on September 14th supporting People's Place and the O+ Festival.
Here's a link to today's playlist.

#136 Gentrification
i want what SHE has
09/11/20 • 102 min
The subject of gentrification in our area has been an important one for several years and is reaching peak crisis now that there's a great migration to our area from New York City. I wanted to better understand gentrification and how we can prevent its harmful effects and this show is highlighting what I've learned in pursuit of a better understanding of the situation. We hear from many women on this show via speeches I was able to source from the internet.
Stacey Sutton, Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Policy in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA) at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her research focuses on worker cooperatives, economic democracy, equitable development, and racially disparate effects of place-based policy and planning. In a forthcoming study, titled “Cooperative Cities,” Stacey examines how municipal leaders are creating enabling environments for starting and sustaining worker-owned cooperatives and limitations of the local state in the cooperative movement. Other bodies of work focus on “Punitive Cities,” meaning the disparate impact of urban policies and place-based initiatives. This includes examining the impact of business improvement districts (BIDs) for small businesses in NYC and the impact of red light and speeding camera tickets on drivers across Chicago. Finally, Stacey examines interplay among race, gentrification and neighborhood change. This is reflected in an article on gentrification and racial transition in the Journal of Urban Affairs. It is also the premise of her book project titled, Buy Black: Race, Retail and the Politics of Neighborhood Business Survival, that examines neighborhood change through the lens of Black small business-owners. Stacey tells how business-owners were instrumental for revitalizing a Brooklyn neighborhood and how processes of gentrification, including the enactment and enforcement of land-use rules, building codes and other regulatory apparatus, hasten shop closure and upend community cohesion. Sutton holds a joint PhD in Urban Planning and Sociology from Rutgers University, and a MBA from New York University. Stacey Sutton, TedX NY 2015

i want what SHE has
01/30/19 • 118 min
Hello People!! Girls will be girls Talking and DOING a lot!
We are giving a shout out to the film "No Choice" by Bill Moyers, it is screening here in NY at Upstate Films followed by a panel talk with these amazing humans: Ruth-Ellen Blodgett, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley; Robin Marty, author of Handbook for a Post-Roe America; and Susan Wong of the NYCLU.
Lea Garnier is our first guest today. Lea has worked in the healing arts for over 20 years and is an accomplished practitioner in this field. She began her healing journey by making paintings that have been displayed, sold and published in Europe and New York State. Lea found Craniosacral Therapy in NYC after suffering neck and back injuries sustained in an auto accident. The relief she found from this work was so profound she put down her painting brushes to pursue training. She is trained as an Upledger Craniosacral Therapist and has a private practice at Sage Academy of Sound Energy / Sage Center for the Healing Arts in Woodstock, NY, a center she co-founded in 2007, and now directs. In 2008 she became a certified yoga instructor trained in the Desikachar linage, and specializes in teaching the integration of sound healing and sound awareness (nada) in a yoga class setting. Lea shares her thoughts on the feminine, how she was exposed to the strength of the feminine via her mom and sisters. Her deep wisdom of sound and how the body heals comes through in all that she shares. She hosts monthly sound baths in Woodstock, NY at Sage as well as her annual retreats at Menla and Ananda. She is like the legit embodiment of the Goddess, for reals.
Dee Solin is our second guest today. Dee is An award winning American Abstract Color Painter. She is known for her highly charged chromatic oil paintings. Her work is in collections in Europe, Australia and the US. After living and painting in the South of France for 20 years, she returned home to New York to pursue her art and to become more involved in the New York art world. When she first arrived, she painted at the Art Students League. After leaving the league she opened a studio space in midtown Manhattan. Presently, she divides her time between her New York City and her new ‘barn’ home in Rhinebeck. She is also the creator of several fine art Colour Guides that are distributed through artist material stores world wide under the name of “MAGIC PALLETTE.” Dee talked about the importance of staying in the place of positivity versus anger or frustration, and how that helps her to keep moving forward.

#45 Sarah Bisceglie (Renaissance Woman) / Jeanne Brooks (Pleasure Activist) "Working Towards Humanity Centered Design"
i want what SHE has
11/28/18 • 119 min
Theresa is flying solo today while Shana is out on tour and winding her way back east!
Theresa welcomes guests Sarah Bisceglie founder of SEB Visions and Jeanne Brooks founder of Virago Futures for a lively show about anger, energy, healing, design thinking and truth telling. Sarah's work can be summed up as striving to make the world a better place by scaling great ideas. As a trained artist and healer, she integrates her many talents and passions into her visioning work to build mission driven organizations. Jeanne Brooks describes herself as an earth healer, energy worker, pleasure activist and community organizer who works in a heart-centered way to shift the systems of oppression and misogyny that exist within the "distressed patriarchal" world we currently live in. The two are collaborating on Truth Telling Playshops intended to help us live more fully in our authentic selves. We talk about the power and importance of feeling and seeing our anger (particularly as women), the need for greater safety and appreciation in our society, self care and speaking of...why social media is bad for all of us (maybe that's a Theresa characterization). It was hard to slow the conversation down. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

#50 Meghan Don (The New Divine Feminine) Elly Swope (Recording Engineer, Destination Universe) "Finding the Feminine and Loving the Process"
i want what SHE has
01/02/19 • 119 min
Happpppppy New Year listeners! We're Girl Talking about What did you do for New Years Eve? What does New Year's mean to you? Do you set intentions for the year? We did, sort of.
Our first guest today is Meghan Don, is an Award-Winning Author, Multi-Faith Minister, and an Initiate of the Sophian Lineage. She has worked extensively with the Christian mystics, the Kabbalistic teachings, and Jungian psychology. She is renowned for her work in helping to raise the feminine consciousness and confidence in our world. Meghan talks about us (people) as mythic beings, and why it is so difficult for women to come forward, why is there that nagging feeling of not being 'enough', and why is it a struggle to be confident? Theresa interviews her about the seven faces of the feminine which goes deeply into into her latest book "The New Divine Feminine". Check out her upcoming events happening in the Hudson Valley.
Our second guest today is Elly Swope. Shana met her on her last tour to the west coast. Elly is a recording engineer working out of Destination Universe in Portland Oregon. She moved to Portland 8 years ago to find her people, which she did immediately. She is a multi-instrumentalist, self taught guitarist and professional drummer. The interview deep dives into the challenges of staying positive in the music industry and how she decided to fall in love with the "process and the journey". She's been touring with bands out of Portland and also just released her new EP: It Feels The Same Everytime. ** There was some technical difficulty with this recording software, you may hear some wifi disfunction on Elly's end and some echo on Shana's end, but it came out beyond that so we aired it!
Self Care...it's that time to talk about how we are taking care of ourselves!!! Shana talks about finding herself in a mild state of depression, allowing herself to be in it and then how trusting herself helps her move through it. Theresa talks about feeling the fire of 2019! It seems to be the theme coming through for 2019. To quote her We'moon calendar book, it's time to "crank up the heat. We need to be on fire this year, but whether we feel the hearth fire of the gathering collective, the fire of a combustion engine, or just burn the house down--that will be up to us and how we use the aspects." Feel the fire, use that energy for good, and have an amazing 2019!

#48 Lavender Suarez (Sound Healer) / Dana Ronnquist (Miss Hudson Valley) "Healing and Deep Listening"
i want what SHE has
12/19/18 • 119 min
Hello Hello!!! How has your week been? We're gonna guess BIZZY!!!
OK!
Today on the show we wanted to talk about volunteering... it seems like this time of year folks come out to help those less fortunate, which is WONDERFUL but we also wanted to let you know that we can think about helping out all year round!
We are also giving a shout out to our listeners to tell us: what topics do you want us to cover in our next season? who do you want us to interview? what round-table discussion would you like us to have? Feel free to send us some ideas! We've been getting alot of good ideas from you already :)
Our first guest today is Dana Ronnquist who is a massage therapist and recent graduate of Wild Gather, Hudson Valley's School of Herbal Studies. Dana has taken her herbal skills to another level in opening Golden Hour Botanicals, a line of herbal body products and tinctures. Dana shares the challenges of working through several health crisis and the disappointment she experienced in the medical profession. After being diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, and receiving that diagnosis via a voicemail, Dana sought out the care of New Leaf, a Kingston and Vermont based naturopathic practice who really provided the care she was seeking. Her Crohn's diagnosis was followed up by a discovery of a large ovarian cyst which she learned later was actually due to endometriosis. This journey led her through challenging diets with limited food options as well as major weight fluctuation, the public's response to her losing weight, and a deeper understanding of what healthy really looks like.
Our second guest today is Lavender Suarez, a sound and energy healer based out of the Hudson Valley. She loves exploring music, even as a kid she played instruments quote un-quote 'wrong' just because she was just very curious about the way that sound worked. She worked with sound in abstracts all through her early life, she studied Art Therapy in college, and after she moved to the Hudson Valley she started working with Pauline Oliveros at the Deep Listening Institute. Did you know that there are tuning forks that work with acupressure points in the body? Through vibration you can reach the nervous system in the body, it helps to quiet the mind and relax the body, and this is what starts the therapeutic process. It's so amazing to hear her explain how her exploration has completely opened her up to a never ending world of vibration!
