How I Got Hired - 59. Alex B Sheridan: Create lasting Impact
play

11/22/21 • 48 min

Send us a text

If you are not following Alex Sheridan on LinkedIn, you are seriously missing out. Like seriously. We’ve all heard the term edutainment: combining education and entertainment, but Alex takes it to a whole new level, with a hard-hitting message you don’t want to hear, but need to hear, all the while laughing out loud amidst some stomach cramps...because Alex is funny. And very intelligent.

Alex helps both entrepreneurs and organizations generate consistent revenue and build their brand on LinkedIn through proven and field-tested content marketing & social selling strategies.

In today’s episode, we talk about how Alex went from working in a Sales role in a staffing company, to starting his own, highly successful company in the middle of a global pandemic.

Alex leaves nothing out. We talk about:

What made him stand out and get hired at one of the top staffing firms in the US, first as a recruiter and then as a salesman

What made him leave a cushy position with a 6 figure salary and start his business called Impaxs Marketing, all at the height of the pandemic

How he pivoted his business while selling A, when people started asking for B

The role and impact that a deeply personal challenge (divorce) played in starting his business

Why not creating content on LinkedIn is a big mistake and how to get started

What to post and how to post: whether you are a job seeker, business owner or employee, so that you attract the attention from the right people

How he found his own distinct style of combining humour, entertainment and education and how you can find your own

There are so many lessons you can apply to your own career, I hope you enjoy the listen as much as I did!

How I Got Hired - 66. Rupert French: How to Keep Winning at any Age
play

“I dropped out of high school in the 10th grade. I was a total failure at school. Subsequently, I joined the army and stayed there for 7 years. Then, I transitioned to becoming a journalist and was all over the place during my journalism career, and ended up at the Sydney Morning Herald. Great job, terrible hours.

Then somehow, I got a chance to go to University in my 30's. That's what I did, came away with a honours degree and a wife.”

Today I am speaking with Rupert French who is a Job Search Specialist and author of the book ‘How to get a good job after 50’. But Rupert is not like other coaches. Firstly, Rupert has been helping disadvantaged job seekers for over 40 years! Secondly, he’s my first guest from the beautiful island state of Tasmania in Australia, and third, Rupert is my first octogenarian guest! Rupert is 83 and continues to work tirelessly to help those who need it the most.

In this powerful and fun conversation, Rupert and I talk about:

How he moved at an early age from England to Australia
- The unforgettable reason that made him start work as a job search coach

His words of advice for anyone who is doing their best but sees a lot stacked against them (circumstances, discrimination etc)

His three timeless job search strategies that he has seen work over and over again, whether in 1982 or 2022.

We had a lot of fun and laughs too, hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did!

There are so many LinkedIn trainers and coaches out there, a basic search generates over 1 million results. Very few of these trainers are actually good. And in that tiny pool of good trainers, you have excellence. And then, you have Richard.
What makes Richard different is that he has been a professional LinkedIn trainer since 2009 and has worked with 750 companies worldwide. Richard has a well known LinkedIn algorithm report that is carefully prepared with a tonne of research but...there’s more to Richard.
Today let’s learn about Richard’s very international career, what made him start his company ‘Just Connecting', move to Spain, after working at very different jobs like at a high school in the Netherlands, at a diving center in Zanzibar and now serving clients in the art of social and virtual selling around the world.

In this episode, Richard and I talk about:

How a short summer job resulted in an entry into the lucrative world of Sales in the Staffing industry

The juicy story behind how Richard started his own firm ‘Just Connecting’ and how he got hired by his very first paying client

How and why his firm started the now famous Annual LinkedIn Algorithm Report (the answer will likely surprise you!)

How the pandemic caused total stress and chaos for many months, yet resulted in multiple silver linings for his business

Snippets from the LinkedIn Algorithm Report to help a job seeker who wants to attract the attention of a recruiter

...and so much more! Hope you enjoy the conversation, and tag me on LinkedIn, I'd love to hear your takeaways!

My guest today teaches people how to fall in love with their work, just like they fall in love with their life partner. It doesn't always happen overnight, but the effort it takes to get there is worth it.
Dr Benjamin Ritter has a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership with a focus on value congruence and job satisfaction, and knows a thing or two about our topic today.
In today's conversation on the How I Got Hired Podcast , Ben shares his own squiggly path and how that has led to his current success:
- Knocking on doors and got hired to work as a Graduate Assistant to finance his graduate program
- Turning a voluntary opportunity into a paying gig. What?
- Dealing with rejections for 2.5 years after graduation
- Getting hired for unusual jobs over the years, because he chose to say 'yes' to everything, make unforgettable memories and saved money for studies.
(Think zombie, mannequin at the museum etc!)
- His 3 step process to fall in love with your work
.. and so much more.

My guest today is Deepa Purushothaman who worked at Deloitte for over 20 years and was the first Indian American woman and one of the youngest to make partner. While that is impressive in and of itself, that is not the only reason Deepa is on the show. Deepa wrote this on LinkedIn a couple of years ago: I left my 22 year old job and felt like I was jumping off the cliff of uncertainty during COVID, to write and launch a business. It felt scary, uncertain, and even a little frivolous at the time. Less than a year later, Deepa released her best-selling book ‘The First, The Few, The Only, How Women of Color Can Redefine Power in Corporate America’, and this is a conversation that we can ALL weigh in on, not just women or a certain race, we have a lot to learn from Deepa’s experience and work.
We cover a lot in this conversation:
-Deepa's journey to making partner,
-How there are so many Indian origin CEO's in the US but not near as many Indian women
-What 'work on your executive presence' meant as feedback for her
... and much more.

My guest today is LinkedIn Top Voice Mita Mallick. Mita has headed consumer brands at places like Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Unilever. The following excerpt from her linkedin bio brings us to what Mita is doing today:

“As a kid, I loved watching commercials instead of actual tv shows (still do!) and going to the store with my mom, studying all the new packaging and products on shelf, testing and trying new things. But as a kid, I didn’t see many stories being told that included people who looked like me. I was the funny looking dark skinned girl, with a long funny looking braid, whose parents spoke funny English. Until it wasn't funny anymore. I was bullied by my peers for years. And I just desperately wanted to fit in. I wanted to belong.
I have spent over 15 years as a storyteller. Leading iconic brands like AVEENO, AVON Color Cosmetics, Chapstick, Vaseline, Suave and Dove. Throughout my career, I have fought hard to ensure people like me are included. Ensuring Black and Brown people were represented in campaigns. Ensuring products we created were for all skin tones. Ensuring we were not reinforcing stereotypes.
I believe diversity of thought doesn’t happen without diversity of representation. When you have all those points of views, life experiences, and cultural backgrounds coming together around a table. Colliding, clashing, and collaborating- that’s when magic happens. That’s when we come up with that one break through innovative idea, campaign, innovation- to authentically and purposefully serve customers and communities.”
In this conversation, Mita and I chat about how she got hired at her dream companies Johnson & Johnson and Unilever and how she transitioned to the DEIB space. We also talk about what it means on a day to day basis work in this space, and how we can all become allies.
If you enjoy honesty and clarity on a difficult subject, you will LOVE this conversation!
