Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck

Do you have health + wellness questions? Don't worry; I've got you! Text me.

It’s no surprise that while we all love to treat our furry friends like family, in many cases they need and deserve the same healthy practices as humans in order to live their own good-better-best life!

Today, I got to interview Dr. Daniel Beatty, founder of Biohacking for Dogs. Biohacking for dogs is the same as biohacking for humans.

The foundation of biohacking is removing unnecessary chemicals and toxins from the environment: medications, vaccines, household air fresheners and cleaners - so that you thrive and not just survive.

Just as with humans, diet matters. Dogs thrive on the carnivore diet. Imagine feeding yourself kibble: essentially highly processed cereal sprinkled with protein powder. We wouldn’t do it. Dogs also can benefit from supplements like fish oil, collagen, and mushrooms. Our companions who help us through mental health disorders and bouts of loneliness deserve to live the life they were made for.

Dr. Dan has more than 25 years as an integrative veterinarian. We talk a bit about his professional pathway and what led him to establish Balanced Motion Veterinary Services which is located in Northwest Indiana, just a short drive from Chicago.

Fuel the Conversation! Loving the podcast? If you’d like to send a little cup of coffee my way in gratitude (and to keep me going!), I’d truly appreciate it. Because it’s the little things...

Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Hack Your Gut Health Documentary

Do you have health + wellness questions? Don't worry; I've got you! Text me.

My niece is starting medical school in a couple of weeks and she recently watched the Netflix documentary “Hack Your Gut Health: The Secrets of Your Gut”. She asked me to watch it and share my thoughts with her from a functional medicine and nutrition standpoint.

Though I do highly recommend checking the funding source of any documentary in order to spot an agenda, I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It is promoting an author’s book, but I actually plan to order a copy to have on hand and may refer patients to it, too.

Fun fact: If you’re lacking a certain strain of bacteria in your gut there’s research that suggests you’re more likely to become obese. Our gut is truly our second brain. A healthy gut means a more balanced weight and balanced hormones. Toxins are more often than not a contributor to bad gut bacteria. Chronic antibiotic use can also lead to an unhealthy gut. I loved how this documentary reiterated that we all need to eat seasonally and eat clean for a healthy gut.

There was some interesting research and a specific study shared that I feel may need to look into - in other words, the verdict is still out, for me. Overall, I enjoyed this documentary and I support a lot of the author’s findings. I think you should check it out and let me know your thoughts!

Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Imagine Heaven with John Burke

Do you have health + wellness questions? Don't worry; I've got you! Text me.

Spiritual well-being is something we often don't talk about.
A lot happened for me this past fall... my husband had an accident that led to a life flight, we found out we were pregnant with our third (which was a complete surprise), and then I decided it was time to quit my job. I found myself searching spiritually and somehow this brought me to John Burke’s interview on the Shawn Ryan podcast and seeking to read his book, “Imagine Heaven”. It was all life-changing.
John Burke is an engineer, the co-founder and former pastor of Gateway Church, a NY Times Best Selling Author, and has dedicated his life to studying over 1,000 near-death experiences (NDEs).
“There are about 40 commonalities in what people consistently say in these NDE interviews. I think that NDEs help people see this life with a new perspective - the good, the bad, the struggles, the suffering, and why love is so important and so hard.”
John shares specific NDE examples in this episode and of course, I requested more information on his research.
