James Connolly is a stand-up comedian and former marine who attended Harvard. He and Dawn have a remarkably jovial time HILF-ing the history of Dooms Day. Because we have been predicting the End of the World for time immemorial, Dawn breaks it down into:
- The Faith-based Theories on the end of the world.
- The Science-based Theories
- The Great Take-Backs - Not only those very specific predictions through history (IE: Y2K, Mayan Calendar) but the stories of those who pin-pointed a specific date for the End, and then ventured second, third and even more guesses when existence stubbornly persists. (There are more than you think.)
---SOURCES & LINKS---
Read more about ancient cuneiform tablets. See what they look like and how we were able to read them.
This will tell you more about human's endless obsession with the apocalypse.
This will tell you more about The Millerites and The Great Disappointment.

HILF 31 - Jack the Ripper with Peter Vogt
Dawn and guest, Peter Vogt, have a bloody good time revisiting the mysterious series of unsolved murders in Whitechapel, 1888. They cover the "canonical five" victims attributed to the unknown killer known as 'Jack the Ripper' - as well as the many theories from both then and now. [Episode transcript]
- 00:00:00 - An introduction of Peter and the general history surrounding Whitechapel, a poor slum where many were regularly resorting to desperate measures to survive. We discuss the five murders attributed to Jack, and his letters taunting the police, and the problem with sussing out the "truths" of the case.

- The Complete History of Jack the Ripper by Philip Sugden
Documentaries:
- The Enduring Mystery of Jack the Ripper (LEMMiNO. Published, 2021) It has a dynamic VO and some great overhead map graphics that give a comparatively emotion-less and conspiracy-less version of events. Nothing graphic of the murders - a play-by-play. Entertains 4 suspects: Charles Cross, Joseph Barnett, Aaron Kosinski and Francis Tumblety.
- UNMASKING JACK the RIPPER (electrictheaterco. Published, 2020 ) This one has some great period photography and less-cringy re-enactments. They interview several experts and discuss some of the favored suspects - including Kosinski. They interview one of his elderly surviving descendants.
- The Missing Evidence: Jack the Ripper (Smithsonian Channel. Published 2018) What really compelled me about this one is that it purports just one suspect and certainly makes a convincing case by the end. In fact, since watching this one and then encountering the story repeated times since - I wonder how no one else sees it... Charles Cross. The investigator is Swedish Journalist Christer Holmgren.
This comprehensive site is for the die-hard Ripperologists... you know who you are.

HILF 33 - Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) with Jason Ryan
Jason Ryan is an actor and comedian based in Los Angeles. He assigned Dawn the history of AA, in part because his own journey with the organization was complicated and he didn't leave feeling particularly good about it. Together we dissect not only the origin of Alcoholics Anonymous, but the individuals at it's core, and how it has evolved over the last 88 years to become what it is today.

Here is the zoom lecture I mention (I watched it twice). Professor Tolly Merrick is a babe. SOURCE: The Center at Belvedere - Charlottsville, VA.
This is a lovely documentary about one of the founders of AA, Bill Wilson. It includes a lot of anonymous members of AA, many of whom knew him personally.
