“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” Movie Review

Kevin says Bad Boys: Ride or Die kinda sucks!
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as wise-cracking Miami detectives in a new BAD BOYS movie.
The story follows the buddy cop duo facing midlife crises at home and getting framed as cartel operatives.
Fans of the BAD BOYS movies should enjoy this because it has all the expected elements: from explosive action and dripping machismo to sports car product placement and drawn-out comedic moments. I suppose that’s what you get with a generation of filmmakers who grew up on a diet of Michael Bay movies.
The problem with this film is its utter lack of originality. I know buddy cop films rely on formula, but there wasn’t even an attempt to put an original spin on things. We are left with a cliché smoothie of a plot interspersed with out-of-place comedy where Martin Lawrence seems to be auditioning for a new sit-com.
Everything from the worn-out dialogue tropes to Will Smith’s Tommy Wisseau dye job makes this movie feel like a relic of the 90s that should be called BAD MIDDLE-AGED GUYS.
BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE gets two Oscar slaps out of five. I’m Kevin Carr, and that’s the way I see it.

‘Mean Girls’ Review

Kevin says Mean Girls kinda rocks!
After twenty years, MEAN GIRLS is making its way back to the big screen, this time as an adaptation of the Broadway musical.
The story follows a home-schooled girl who has her first taste of public high school. She befriends the popular clique but soon learns these girls can be... well, downright mean.
The production is bright, vibrant and colorful, and the song and dance numbers are impressive for their creativity... though at times they threaten to overshadow the story.
This version seems more of a tribute to the original film than a remake or adaptation. The film is fraught with cliches and tropes that have become far too routine in films lately.
The updates pander to the social media generation, considering none of these platforms even existed in 2004. If I have to sit through another TIkTok montage in a high school comedy, I’m gonna lose it.
In the end, MEAN GIRLS is entertaining enough, and it should land well with its target audience. Though I’m doubtful if this will form a new clique. It will likely just be remembered as secondary to the original.
MEAN GIRLS gets three and a half pink sweaters out of five. I’m Kevin Carr, and that’s the way I see it.

“Nosferatu” Movie Review

Kevin says NOSFERATU kinda rocks!
Dracula has risen from his coffin again, this time as Count Orlok in NOSFERATU.
The original NOSFERATU was made in Germany without permission of the Bram Stoker estate, but it remains one of the most iconic versions of Dracula. Using different names and locations, the 1922 film lives on, this time with Robert Eggers (director of THE VVITCH and THE LIGHTHOUSE) in charge.
The film follows Stoker’s book closely, featuring a vampire traveling across Europe to bring death to a German city. Eggers borrows some plague imagery and story notes from Werner Herzog’s 1979 adaptation, and he loads the film with dark surrealism.
Lily-Rose Depp is the focus of the film as the target of the Count’s desires. She has improved her acting considerably and gives it her all in the emotional performance, though the writing still remains frustratingly one dimensional.
As an atmospheric take on the Dracula legend, it works. Though at times I wonder if Eggers’ talents aren’t the best with smaller budgets.
NOSFERATU gets three vampire shadows out of five. I’m Kevin Carr, and that’s the way I see it.

“Speak No Evil” Movie Review

Kevin says Speak No Evil kinda sucks!
Hollywood’s remake for this week offers a new presentation of a Danish thriller from two years ago.
SPEAK NO EVIL follows an American family who befriend a couple while on vacation in Italy. Weeks later, they accept an invitation to visit the couple at their out-of-the-way farmhouse. However, warning signs begin to mount, and the family realizes they might never escape.
The film is competently made with a healthy dose of suspense and atmosphere. And acting from James McAvoy as one of the antagonists is unsettling and nuanced.
However, this family in danger comprises some of the most insufferable and clueless people imaginable. I mean, it’s like a whole family of Skylars from BREAKING BAD.
Even if the trailers weren’t so loaded with spoilers that you could walk in on the third act and still be able to predict what will happen next, the action retreads so many other similar films that it just feels stale.
I love a good thriller, and there is one hiding in this movie. But to fully enjoy it, you kind of have to have never seen a movie like it before.
SPEAK NO EVIL gets two creepy couples out of five. I’m Kevin Carr, and that’s the way I see it.

‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ Review

Kevin says The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Kinda Rocks!
It’s another weekend, and another war movie is opening in theaters. But this one takes a more whimsical approach.
Guy Ritchie directs THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE, a somewhat true but greatly embellished story of a secret British plot during World War II.
Winston Churchill directs a rag-tag group of mercenaries to cripple Germany’s U-Boat capabilities. And along the way, a lot of Nazis get killed. I mean, A LOT.
Not since Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS has there been such a joyful display of Nazi grudge-killing, and I’m all for that. It’s what rockets this movie from a war film to an almost comic-book level of insanity. And its tongue-in-cheek attitude with a formidable cast makes it a lot of fun.
As expected from Ritchie, there’s plenty of action and punchy one-liners. He’s definitely back in his filmmaking element here.
Not to be taken too seriously as it revels in its own pulpiness, this is a silly film, but it’s still a great deal of fun.
THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE gets three and a half machine guns out of five. I’m Kevin Carr, and that’s the way I see it.

‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Review

Kevin says KUNG FU PANDA 4 Kinda rocks!
After a successful trilogy, DreamWorks brings another installment of the unlikely Dragon Warrior. The aptly named KUNG FU PANDA 4 follows Po as he battles a new villain, a shape-shifting sorcerer seeking the powers of the kung fu masters.
The first Kung Fu Panda was a pleasant surprise, and the sequels have been decent continuations of the one-joke story. This series manages to juggle the new characters picked up along the way, making it better than most for a fourth film.
The cast is good led by an always energetic Jack Black, with Bryan Cranston and James Hong showing a surprising amount of chemistry. However, Akwafina is a bit overexposed right now and wore on my nerves.
The animation continues to impress with slick anime-inspired action elements. And all the cuddly animal characters make it a good bet for families.
Still, the premise is a bit of a stretch this time around... and that’s saying something for a series based on a fat panda who learns kung fu. I’m not sure how many more of these the studio can milk out of the idea, but this one remains clever and fun.
KUNG FU PANDA 4 gets three dumplings out of five. I’m Kevin Carr, and that’s the way I see it.
