The Microsoft Modern Wireless headset is made by Microsoft and is a decent wireless headset when using Microsoft Teams. And by decent, I don't mean premium, because this isn't one of those headsets. But to be fair, it doesn't carry a premium price either, at just $99.99.
What it does is get the job done. And by that I mean, the microphone voice quality is fairly good, not great, but decent enough to use on any of your business calls. Truthfully, it's a middle of the pack sound, so expecting something more will only cause you to be disappointed. Similarly, the Microsoft Modern Wireless headset noise canceling ability is pretty much the same. That is, about average. We challenged it by subjecting it to noises that included office noise, dogs barking, and of course our signature Vitamix blender test. It did remove some of this noise, but you could still detect it quite often. And, the microphone voice quality wasn't stellar when it was dealing with those noises. All in all, I'd give the voice sound quality, and the noise canceling ability a C or C- grade. As they say, nothing to write home to Mom about.
Unfortunately, the microphone boom arm doesn't bend, or flex. Why is that a big deal? It has to do with microphone placement. Placing the microphone in that sweet spot, which is about two fingers width from the corner of your mouth, and just below your lower lip, gives you your best sound quality. Placing it too far away, or too close can result in some serious sound quality issues. You also have to consider that everyone has a different size, and shape, to their head. It would be far better if the microphone boom could flex so that it could be adjusted into the right spot.
Hand in hand with this same microphone flex limitation is that the ear speakers don't rotate. Ears, like heads, aren't all the same. They vary in size, shape and pitch. Having ear speakers that adapt to the ear is far better than having your ear adapt to the location of the speaker. Unfortunately, the Microsoft Modern Wireless headset ear speakers remain in a fixed position. This one of those examples that helps to illustrate that this isn't a premium wireless headset.
On a more positive note, the Microsoft Modern Wireless Headset comes with a battery that gives you a ton of battery life. When talking, it's rated up to 30 hours of battery, and when listening you get even more at up to 50 hours. That's pretty impressive, and you won't have to recharge all that often either.
Another nice feature on this headset is you can mute the microphone two ways; first, you can press the mute button located on the headset. You can also raise the boom arm to mute the mic. Lowering it unmute it. That's a nice feature you typically don't find on sub $100.00 headsets.
And while on all things positive, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that when using Microsoft Teams, you can answer and end calls when away from the desk. This too is a feature you seldom, if ever, find on headsets that don't break the $100.00 price point. This feature helps you to not miss calls when you're away from your desk, and as a result, your customers get better, more direct access to you, and you have fewer voice messages, and calls to return.
