The Gathas, traditionally attributed to ancient Iran's Zarathushtra (Zoroaster) himself, is one of humanity's greatest literary and mystical monuments. Its author is on a mission to share the truth about reality and human's true nature and in the verses, preserved since the second millennium BCE, he sets down this profound wisdom from ancient Persia. While this meditation is not at all religious, it is Zarathustra's wisdom that undergirds and inspires this 20 minute guided meditation. The imagery and fundamental truths expounded in the Gathas are set here in the context of a personalized journey that allows you to experience and identify with your higher self, your true self.

No one likes to think about it but each of us has experienced the feelings of shame or humiliation or done something we deeply rgret. At one time or another, more frequently or less, everyone has had the fear that people will see you as a fraud, they will judge you as a failure, or that they will reject you because you are unreliable. That toxic cocktail of deep embarrassment combined with fear and regret and even self-loathing is not something anyone wants to taste.

So, if you’d rather not go there right now, I understand. Most of the Serena meditations allow you to bypass these dark places. The method is such that, without repressing or suppressing these darker passages of our history, we can free ourselves from them without directly addressing them. But sometimes the unpleasant moments of our past (we could even call them ghosts) haunt us with such persistence that it is helpful to have a technique to just go right at it and let go of these feelings and memories directly. So that is what we are going to do today. I am going to guide you through the steps to let go of your “ghosts” of regret, shame or humiliation.

As a side note, I should say that I will be using the words ghost and demons in this meditation. You should be aware that I use them as a device to focus your mind. If you prefer, you can call them habitual patterns of neurological activity that irresistibly manifest as unpleasant emotions and dysfunctional behavior. But those aren’t words we can work with very easily to effect a change in your life. They might please our intellect, but they do nothing for our emotional self. So, I’m going to stick with the ghost metaphor and (unless you’re someone that is really into ghosts), I ask that you just think of this term like a sort of brain hack or shortcut and play along with the metaphor.

We can claim an air of self confidence whenever we choose, and that is what this meditation is about. The truth is, however, that sustainable self confidence only arises when we realize that we actually have no control over anything and that there is a benevolent force that does have this control. Everything that happens is an expression of what the ancient masters might call the Divine Will, or as might be expressed today, what we could call the Physical Laws of Nature. We can't argue with what is. What has happened or is happening just is. You can stick a supernatural being in there as the prime mover or just call it physics or whatever but there is little basis to argue that any one of us individually as a human or even all of us collectively as a species can actually control what happens in every detail. I tell my arm to move, yes, and it moves, but the chain of causation that led to me having that thought and that ability I had nothing to do with and it is infinitely complex and goes back in time indefinitely. And modern neuroscience is producing more and more evidence supporting the claim that our actions emerge prior to us even being conscious of our intentions. So we don't control it. Our freedom of choice in the actions of bodies in the world of form is an illusion. A useful illusion for maximizing the propagation of our genes. Fine. But wait, there's more! There is this recipe for navigating through this life of ours, of adapting the electrical and chemical activity of the brain to create a sense of happiness and abundance and peace. We can short-circuit the more typical pattern of endless dissatisfaction. THAT is where we DO have control, where we CAN exercise our free will. We can choose to follow this recipe or we can choose to ignore it. Meditations like this one will help you along the path to realizing this true self-confidence; a self-confidence that is rooted in the notion that the Universe controls the Universe but you get to choose how you react to it and what emotions and thoughts you have in response.

It is in those moments that grounding yourself can be a true blessing. This guided meditation walks you through simple meditation to do just that. You will also find that it is a salve to the jet lagged body and will help accelerate your adaptation to the new time zone. You can even begin working on shifting your body's clock before you leave! One of the more confusing and seemingly wrong teachings from the ancient masters is this idea that the secret to a happy healthy life is 'non-doing' (Wu Wei). But what in the world can they possibly mean?! How is doing nothing (if that is what they mean) the key to happiness and health? The answer isn’t what you think. You first need to learn what the old sages mean by expressions like “The wise person does nothing, yet nothing is left undone” (Lao Tzu) or “Self, confused by the idea of an ‘I’, thus thinks, ‘I am the doer’" (Krishna). Or, if you prefer, you can look to the Islamic mystics of 12thcentury CE (such as Ibn ‘Arabi) for a solution. He made a distinction between “Divine Will” and “Divine Wish” which helps elucidate what these ancient teachings mean. Ibn 'Arabi might express it by saying that the truth of reality is that everything that happens, the world as it is and as it becomes each moment, is an expression of God's Will (or you could just say is an expression of the forces of nature of physics, if God isn’t your thing). This is what he calls the ‘Divine Will.’ In contrast, ‘Divine Wish’ is concerned with how each one of us individually as a human can reach "heaven" or "Nirvana" or discover within ourselves the underlying perfection that union with the all (what Ibn 'Arabi would call "Oneness of Being") allows to become manifest. You see, it quickly becomes complicated and overly intellectual. For those that like that kind of thing, I explain what all that means in my blog. But sometimes it is just easier to experience the lesson. That is what this meditation is for. To teach you how to let go, to show you what that feels like, to open you to the possibilities that emerge when you learn this lesson. Just relax and let me do the work for you.

Haunted by something in your past? Regretting something you did? You're not alone. But sometimes there are experiences so difficult that they require a special focus in order to reach a state of forgiveness. This meditation is going to help bring you to a place where you can experience forgiveness even with the toughest situations. Remember that forgiveness doesn't mean that you will allow yourself to be treated badly in the future or that you ever need to see someone that has wronged you again. This is an internal and private conversation that allows you to heal yourself and return to a place of integrity and peace. This is an exercise in opening your heart, in letting go, in finding relief, in leaving all bitterness and anger or shame and grief behind. If you are spiritually inclined, you might like to think of this as a method to break the cycle of karma or accept God's grace. There are two features of human consciousness that are superpowers most of us fail to take full enough advantage of: You have the power to move your awareness and you have the power to hold your awareness where you choose. Today we are going to employ these powers to help heal a situation in your past that haunts you today. It may be something you have done or it could also be something that has been done to you. It could be from an offence, a flaw, a mistake. It will be something that makes you feel angry or ashamed or trapped or misunderstood or sad. Often these forgiveness meditations need to be repeated sometimes more than once a day, for many days for the full effect to take hold. So consider that as an option for you.I should say here that am indebted to the Sufi poet Jalaluddin Rumi for inspiring much of my practice but this meditation in particular. Our Mid- and Upper backs hold the weight of the world, our world at least. And this weight can bring chronic or periodic pain. Fortunately we can use our bodies and minds to release this pain, to heal ourselves. We just need to know the code. Scientists have identified and synthesized the parts of marijuana that make people feel so good and along the way they have figured out the answer to the mystery of why all human brains would have evolved a specific receptor in the brain for a plant that until recently only grew in South Asia. It turns out that the cannaboid system is key part of our brain’s regulatory structure. So we didn’t evolve to respond to that particular plant. We, and every other organism down to the lowly sponge uses cannaboids to maintain balance in the body. Amazingly, the effect of our self-produced cannaboids in our bodies, while not as strong as the highly concentrated versions that people consume from the cannabis plant, is the same. Our bodies also produce endorphins and anyone that regularly exercises is familiar with the fact that these chemicals activate the same opioid receptors as morphine and heroin, albeit at a much lower intensity. The point is that we have the power to create these chemicals ourselves. In fact, producing these cannaboids might be the most important physiological system we have for creating and maintaining health in our bodies. These extraordinary compounds, while performing different tasks in different tissues, always have the same goal: the achievement and preservation of a balanced internal environment despite changes in the external environment. So we can synthesize the active agent in marijuana in our own bodies when we choose to and not have the costly side-effects from the over the counter or illicit kinds. But how? We can’t say to our brain “Okay, I’ll have some endorphins now.” We have to go exercise. The same goes for cannaboids. We have to speak the language of our bodies. We do that through movement, touch, music, attention, and love. We’ll bring these insights to releasing tension in our backs in this guided moving meditation. When we speak of chakras and energy and spirit this engages our brain in a conversation with our muscle tissues in a way that we can’t have using everyday language. So even if you don’t believe in a numinal realm and energy channels and chakras and so on, just play along and think of these ideas as simply ways to hack your brain, as ways to take command of the extraordinary chemical factories we have within us. If you enjoy these practical guided meditations, you may like to listen to the Serena Podcast (https://goo.gl/Dxu4eo) which provides the theory behind these practices and where we are headed by doing them. Obviously, if are having a serious traumatic episode and are suffering from whiplash or very real back pain, please seek the help of a professional.
