Goosebuds

Welcome to Goosebuds! A podcast where your hosts Paul Ritchey, Chad Quandt, and Kevin Cole dig into the Young Adult Literature of Goosebumps by R.L. Stine and give these tomes the deep critique and respect they deserve. Sometimes they get too scared and cover other adjacent 90s books and culture instead. Come join us and re-discover the stories you grew up with or jump in for the first time.

The corn state is in trouble, listeners! Small robotic drones designed like metal wasps are terrorizing the youth. They are not being used for war. Let us make that clear: this is not a metaphor about drone warfare at all. Your hosts Chad Quandt, Paul Ritchey, and Kevin Cole cover Johnathan Rand's American Chillers: Iron Insects Invade Indiana. And we're joined by the wonderful Payton Whaley (WTIU's Flyover Culture). Payton's an Indiana boy like Chad and the two bond about their lives in the 'Crossroads of America', working for public television, and enjoying a time when there weren't metal menaces filling the skies. It was a simpler time. Anyway, this is a good episode! Enjoy.

Book discussion begins: 4:30

Sharpen your horns on the nearest elderwood, Goosebuddies! Your hosts Chad Quandt, Paul Ritchey, and Kevin Cole are reading a Choose Your Own Adventure: Deborah Lerme Goodman's The Magic of the Unicorn. Our kid heroes are on a quest to find a unicorn horn to purify their village's water supply. Presumably you put the horn in a water filter. Maybe you drink from it like a giant straw. Will we run into that tree hag on the cover? Or will something else more magical occur? Enjoy! Episode begins: 7:30 OFF TOPICS: Being overly familiar with Deborah, Referring to people by their profession, City streets and their relative twistiness, Wearing pain like armor, Getting your ear pierced at Claire's, additional literary material, The LotR BTS bonus features that Kevin somehow never saw You can support Goosebuds, get access to bonus episodes, join our secret Discord, and more at patreon.com/goosebuds Dress your skeleton with Goosebuds apparel at goosebuds.store Email: [email protected] Twitter: @GoosebudsPod Edited by Kevin Cole (@RealKevinCole) Music by Seth Earnest (sethearnest.net)

Beware of grues, Goosebuddies! Your hosts Chad Quandt, Paul Ritchey, and Kevin Cole check out another Choose Your Own Adventure book based off one of the first adventure games ever: Zork! This 'What-Do-I-Do-Now" Book is Zork #1: The Forces of Krill by S. Eric Meretzky. Is Krill the Ganon of this world? Would we be shaking in our +1 Boots at the mention of his lizard men if we had played the original game? It seems Krill just likes hiding in holes in the ground, which isn't that much different than Tears of the Kingdom. We also discuss how delicious 'dino damage' used to look on toys. Enjoy the episode and stay alive!

Book adventure begins: 12:00

OFF TOPICS: Daylight Savings Time, Bugs, Jurassic Park Battle Damage Toys, J. Kenji López-Alt, Bugs Part II

01/15/24 • 97 min

We're back in Horrorland, Buddies! Your hosts Chad Quandt, Paul Ritchey, and Kevin Cole cover R.L. Stine's Goosebumps Horrorland book 'Creep from the Deep'. We're reunited with Billy and Sheena Deep and their uncle Dr. D. What sort of doctor is Deep? A water scientist? He does not have respect for the ocean like he should and his children suffer once again because of it. But this book has some pretty fun stuff including ghost pirates! Or pirate ghosts! And we learn more about the shared book story of Horrorland. What are the Horrors planning? Do they even have a plan? Note: despite the cover there are not Shrek Eels.

Book discussion begins: 14:45

Goosebuds - Ep 167 - Adventure! - Flight of the Unicorn
play

01/22/24 • 92 min

Giddyup, Pegacorn! Your hosts Chad Quandt, Paul Ritchey, and Kevin Cole wrangle the Choose Your Own Adventure book Flight of the Unicorn by Deborah Lerme Goodman. In a previous episode we had a great adventure in Deborah's Scottish-ish fantasy world. In this book we're the apprentice to some sort of horse-mancer? It involves sewing wings onto cats to turn them into unicorns? There has to be a better method, right? Either way a dastardly royal wants to turn our beautiful flying horses into an unstoppable army! We can't have any of that. Thankfully we have the strongest weapon in the kingdom: pocket cat! What danger lies beneath our very feet? Could it be morlocks? C.H.U.D.s? Or something even worse: giant nightcrawler worms that have no real senses and just flop around crushing everything! Doesn't that sound positively spooky? We hope so, because Chad Quandt and Kevin Cole are reading Johnathan Rand's American Chillers series #15: Nebraska Nightcrawlers. Will these kids be able to shrink the subterranean assassins back down to size? Enjoy the episode!

Goosebuds - Ep 153 - Earth Geeks Must Go!
play

07/03/23 • 89 min

Blast off, Goosebuddies! Your hosts Paul Ritchey, Chad Quandt, and Kevin Cole read R.L. Stine's Goosebumps 2000 book Earth Geeks Must Go! It is a 'story' about young boy Jacob Miller who finds himself on an alien planet with strange differences than his own. For example, everyone here eats food with arm pit mouths! Gross! To be honest, it's mostly identical to Earth for some reason. People read books with their tongues; is that spooky? Also there are war crimes committed by sentient bugs. Enjoy the episode!

OFF TOPICS: Handclaps in songs, falling in love on the internet, Dianne Feinstein's Kid Talk, the Work Generation, why TikTok Homesteaders rely on the very Internet that they hate.

We swear we did our homework; a very nice A+ papier-mâché volcano but a galactic cruiser (stuck on shrink mode as often happens) crashed into our basement and things escalated from there.

Paul and Chad are joined by writer Marly Halpern-Graser (Thundercats Roar, Aquaman: King of Atlantis, Mad) to talk about beloved Bruce Coville's first book in the miniseries known as Rod Allbright's Alien Adventures: Aliens Ate My Homework. This book has it all: martial arts aliens, Star Trek paralells, surprisingly good discussion about gender and pronouns, the tempation one feels to shake the tiny people in your lunchbox...

OFF TOPICS: none really, we get into the book immediately!

This episode of Goosebuds sees Kevin, Paul, and Chad joined by guest Hadley St. Clair (Super Try Studios, Pretend Friends) to discuss R.L. Stine's Goosebumps 2000 book I Am Your Evil Twin. To paraphrase Hadley, this story has so many red herrings it should be tinned. It also has one of the craziest plot twists we've ever covered on the show: clone child trafficking! Scary indeed! They also discuss 90s allergy science, papier mache burdens, and piano standoffs. Enjoy! Book Discussion begins at: 09:45 OFF-TOPICS: live-action anime adaptations of our nightmares, heirloom hatchets, Timothée Chalamet the YouTuber. Goosebuds - Ep 159 - Revenge of the Living Dummy
play

09/25/23 • 91 min

Slappy' back, Goosebuddies! Your hosts Chad Quandt, Kevin Cole, and Paul Ritchey read through the first book in R.L. Stine's Goosebumps Horrorland series: Revenge of the Living Dummy. The Horrorland series promises an ongoing story connecting these spooky tales; does it start strong with the iconic puppet monster? What is Slappy's connection to a theme park? And who is Mr. Badboy? Is it Slappy? Oh yeah, it's just Slappy.
