Only 25% of US workers have access to paid family leave through an employer. To flip it, 75% of US workers don’t have access to paid family leave through an employer, meaning the majority of people do not have access. Important to add here is the word paid, which is a part of our conversation which defines the differences between terms like maternity leave versus paid leave. Said conversation is with Dawn Huckelbridge, the Director of Paid Leave For All, and tackles more than the defining terms, but gets into the benefits and impact of paid leave – and how a national paid leave policy would help people coast to coast. We go into why we need it, how it would work, how businesses and workers would both benefit, and where we’re at in the fight for passing this policy. We also talk about what paid leave looks like around the globe, sharing the differences between where we are and where we need to be on this policy.

Latino Victory’s Executive Director Sindy Benavides on building and protecting a more representative government
This week’s interview features a conversation with the one, the only, the amazing Executive Director of Latino Victory, Sindy Benavides. Our conversation looks at the work Latino Victory has done to increase Latino representation throughout elected offices across the country – from the strategies to the goals ahead in 2024. Naturally, the current status quo is discussed, and where the many areas for growth exist of enhancing representation, protecting representation, and enhancing voter engagement amongst this nuanced demographic. Speaking of nuance, we talk about the monolith myth and how pollsters get this varied and growing group oh so very wrong. For those listening that are considering a run for office, this episode is made for you – and that person in your life that you’ve asked several times to run for office, or to at least consider it.

Running against George Santos and electing young people to Congress with Zak Malamed, Founder of The Next 50 & Candidate for Congress
If you’re a long time listener of the Girl and the Gov, The Podcast, you’ve without a doubt heard us reference our friend Zak. But who is he? What does he do? Well this episode is his big reveal [minus the people at our last NY event, sorwz for the spoiler]. He’s been working to connect young philanthropists with young future political leaders at his PAC, The Next 50. To date, over 80% of the PAC’s endorsed leaders have won their general elections - love to see it. The work done has also made the PAC #1 in investing in young dems, which we need more of in office. Now for the plot twist, Zak’s work in getting others elected has turned into him now running for office, specifically for George Santos’ seat. In our chit chat we talk about his decision to run, the man he hopes to beat, and the need for an elected official that represents the people, not makes a mockery of them.
