Us when talking about healthcare in the US and singing our favorite Avril Lavigne throwback: “Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated?”

But, seriously, healthcare in the US is no walk in the park. In fact, it’s more of a walk in a corn maze -- disorienting, confusing, and altogether spooky. To break down some of the basics, we had the honor of hosting Julie Oliver, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Ground Game Texas on this episode. Giving us the 411 on healthcare finance, citing a career in the industry and political know-how, Julie pulled back the red tape on medicare, medicaid, and everything else under the sun that has us scratching our heads.

What are worker’s rights? What is collective bargaining? What in the literal world is the Taft-Hartley Act? Okay, and what about the Pro Act -- is there a cheat sheet somewhere? For this episode, we tapped Melanie D’Arrigo, Congressional Candidate (NY-3) to give us the answers to these q’s, which had us scratching our heads and trying to hit the good ol’ Google machine. Giving us the 411 on worker’s rights from a policy lens, past and future, Melanie walked us toward the answers and away from the head scratching to provide us a comprehensive understanding of where worker’s rights and unions stand currently in the realm of politics.

Gender equality is a complex and nuanced topic, and discussing it at a global level is no exception from this qualification. In this episode, we begin the conversation around it, peeling back some of the many layers involved in what the status quo is at large, why in 2021 we are only so far, and how geopolitics play an important role. Joined by the amazing mind that is Dania Gharaibeh, Team Lead, Gender Equality at the IRC, we also brought clarity on terms and concepts commonly a part of the equality equation, including defining what child and forced marriages are, the differences between the two, and so much more.

If you’ve been scratching your head about what on earth is going on with the Build Back Better bill, this episode is going to be your bread and butter of reference points. We go IN on the bill with Brian Derrick, Political Strategist & Founder of Oath to get a grasp on what’s included in the bill, what’s not, and what the process looks like for potentially passing it. Naturally, since we love abbreviations, we also get into the confusion around BBB versus the BIF, and even define what the CBO does. And, if that also has you scratching your head, do not worry, just head to wherever you get your pods and listen in and learn what all of those fun bits and pieces are.

Best yet, this episode contains tons and bunches of q’s from the audience. Shoutout to all that submitted those bad boys. As per usual, if you have a q or a topic you’d like to learn more about in politics, slide into our DMs.

Only 25% of US workers have access to paid family leave through an employer. To flip it, 75% of US workers don’t have access to paid family leave through an employer, meaning the majority of people do not have access. Important to add here is the word paid, which is a part of our conversation which defines the differences between terms like maternity leave versus paid leave. Said conversation is with Dawn Huckelbridge, the Director of Paid Leave For All, and tackles more than the defining terms, but gets into the benefits and impact of paid leave – and how a national paid leave policy would help people coast to coast. We go into why we need it, how it would work, how businesses and workers would both benefit, and where we’re at in the fight for passing this policy. We also talk about what paid leave looks like around the globe, sharing the differences between where we are and where we need to be on this policy.

You’re going to want to sit down for this. No, seriously, this episode requires being seated. It’s powerful, it’s moving, and honestly much of this discussion had us all choked up. On this episode – one of our very first recorded in person – is a sit down with FL State Representative (D-95) & Former Parkland, FL Mayor, Christine Hunschofsky. This incredible leader walked us through what happened in Parkland, specifically the aftermath of the violent day that put the city on the national map. We discussed how towns and cities are or are not prepared for mass tragedies. We discussed the mental toll and impact on the communities in which these tragedies occur (a piece of the puzzle and mental health discussion that’s often omitted from the narrative around gun violence). We discuss Florida’s red flag law and its effectiveness. And, we also talk about leading with a humanity-first outlook. There’s a lot to unpack, and a lot to learn from this conversation.

The last few weeks have been headline city as it relates to the US’s longest war -- the war in Afghanistan. A departure from the past 20 years, where the war received little to no press coverage, the past few weeks had many of us constantly at a loss for words and left with many questions as to how on earth we got to this place. Cue, this week’s episode where we were honored to be joined by Veteran and Congressional Candidate for NY-11, Brittany Ramos DeBarros. Brittany, in our conversation, walked us through the many realities of this war, from how we ended up there in the first place to what being on the ground actually was like, the corporate interests involved, and so much more. If you’ve had questions on Afghanistan, this is the episode for you.

In November, we’ll all go to the polls (seriously this is your reminder to vote) to decide who will have access to the nuclear codes. Insane right? We thought so too, so we got the details on the lay of the land when it comes to nuclear weapons around the world and what it really means for a prez to have the codes. And we got those deats from our gals the Federation of American Scientists [FAS], Eliana Johns & Mackenzie Knight. If you’re not sure what’s on the line this year, this episode will make it clear as day.

Will Rollins is running for Congress in SoCal with the goal of thoughtfully escorting the current Republican incumbent to the curb (of one of the buildings that said incumbent allegedly owns and has raised rent prices on for residents during a housing crisis). In this episode, we chat with him about this race, his prior run, and the critical nature of name recognition. We also zero in on the need to stop the clown show in Congress and a desperate need for more normal people to run for office. There’s a lot that can change with this seat, and we get into it all.
