But, seriously, healthcare in the US is no walk in the park. In fact, it’s more of a walk in a corn maze -- disorienting, confusing, and altogether spooky. To break down some of the basics, we had the honor of hosting Julie Oliver, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Ground Game Texas on this episode. Giving us the 411 on healthcare finance, citing a career in the industry and political know-how, Julie pulled back the red tape on medicare, medicaid, and everything else under the sun that has us scratching our heads.

What are worker’s rights? What is collective bargaining? What in the literal world is the Taft-Hartley Act? Okay, and what about the Pro Act -- is there a cheat sheet somewhere? For this episode, we tapped Melanie D’Arrigo, Congressional Candidate (NY-3) to give us the answers to these q’s, which had us scratching our heads and trying to hit the good ol’ Google machine. Giving us the 411 on worker’s rights from a policy lens, past and future, Melanie walked us toward the answers and away from the head scratching to provide us a comprehensive understanding of where worker’s rights and unions stand currently in the realm of politics.

Gender equality is a complex and nuanced topic, and discussing it at a global level is no exception from this qualification. In this episode, we begin the conversation around it, peeling back some of the many layers involved in what the status quo is at large, why in 2021 we are only so far, and how geopolitics play an important role. Only 25% of US workers have access to paid family leave through an employer. To flip it, 75% of US workers don’t have access to paid family leave through an employer, meaning the majority of people do not have access. Important to add here is the word paid, which is a part of our conversation which defines the differences between terms like maternity leave versus paid leave. Said conversation is with Dawn Huckelbridge, the Director of Paid Leave For All, and tackles more than the defining terms, but gets into the benefits and impact of paid leave – and how a national paid leave policy would help people coast to coast. We go into why we need it, how it would work, how businesses and workers would both benefit, and where we’re at in the fight for passing this policy. We also talk about what paid leave looks like around the globe, sharing the differences between where we are and where we need to be on this policy.
