S1 E23. From Player to Coach, A Wonderful Cycle Continues: Coaches Dave Webster & Scott Hacket-Dalgleish, Part I.
Get The Lax Scoop
08/09/23 • 24 min
In our first foray into the world of Division III Men’s lacrosse we are lucky to have two exceptional coaches to interview: Dave Webster of Dickinson and Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh of RPI.
Over the past twenty years Coach Dave Webster, a.k.a. Webbie, has established Dickinson into a perennial powerhouse in conference as well in the NCAA playoff picture. Interestingly, Coach Scott Hacket-Dalgliesh, or “Little Dawg” as our co-host and his big brother, Ron Dalgliesh, a.k.a. “The Big Dawg” likes to call him, is a Dickinson alum, and Scott along with his teammates, of the class of 2007, had a major impact in getting the momentum going while playing at Dickinson, in Carlisle, PA. Following in Webbie’s footsteps, Coach Hackett-Dalgliesh has established RPI as a force to be reckoned with on the lacrosse field. In the podcast you’ll hear how Coach Hackett-Dalgliesh has helped develop a winning culture as he led RPI to the NCAA tournament in 2019 and in the regular season of 2022, was the only team in the country to beat RIT, the eventual national champion.
Also, the two coaches have formed a very special bond over the years, as Webbie recruited, coached, and even mentored Scott as a coach and has been a major influence in his life. This episode is chock full of golden nuggets you won’t want to miss! Check it out and if you would, please leave a review and tell a friend about us so you can help our message grow!!

In this first portion, of our next three part series, we learn how the Johns Hopkins teams of the mid 1980s, with arguably the greatest defense known to Division 1 Men's Lacrosse, achieved greatness, winning two national titles with three finals appearances, and four final fours spanning the careers of our guests from 1983-1986.
Both players have been recognized as All Americans, national champions, and hall of famers, as well as youth, high school, college, and professional coaches.
We start off hearing of our guest's humble beginnings as High School multi sport athletes growing up on Long Island, and then progress to when these two freshman roommates met for the first time and how they have continued to be the best of friends ever since. And yes, we'll discover they've stayed not only connected to each other but connected to the sport of lacrosse, with their friends, with their families, and with just about anyone who shows an interest.
Enjoy the pure positive energy emanating from these two highly accomplished, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic lacrosse legends.

We’re so excited to release our interview with coaches and brothers, Gerry and Steve Byrne. The pair, along with their older brother and parents, grew up in Levittown, NY on Long Island with their older brother and parents in the nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighties. Steve, older than Gerry by five years, states in his understated, tongue in cheek manner, that he attended the local public high school, Levittown Division, so his parents could save up their money for their favorite son, Gerry. That way Gerry could attend perennial powerhouse Chaminade, the private Catholic school in Nassau county.
Gerry disputes whether or not he was the favorite son but is quick to point out there was no disputing what a great talent his older brother Steve was as the top recruited high school defensemen on Long Island back in 1979. Steve became a 3X All American at Virginia and eventually was a starter on defense for Team USA helping them win gold in Toronto, Canada in 1986.
Gerry states he was quite exceptional himself, as he was the only player at Chaminade who tried out for the lacrosse team in a thick Irish sweater. Despite his bewildering choice of apparel, he did make the team and enjoyed a solid high school career. He went on to play, also as a defensemen, at Umass Amherst where he was a 2X All New England selection and lead the Minutemen to the NCAA quarterfinals in 1986.
Gerry Byrne, of course, would go on to a stellar coaching career as the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame until 2019. Since 2020 has been the head coach at Harvard. Harvard is currently 6-0 and ranked #12 in the nation, one of the highest rankings the program has ever achieved in the NCAA era.
In this first episode, the brothers Byrne describe their upbringing and how lacrosse became a big part of both their lives growing up leading Steve to the University of Virginia and Gerry to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Steve describes his days on grounds in Charlottesville in raucous fashion as he and a number of Long Island lacrosse players clash with the local inhabitants. This is an enlightening, fun, and dramatic interview you won’t want to miss!

S2 E9. Acorns Don't Fall Far From The Tree; DIII COY, Steve Koudelka & Brandon Childs, Part III.
Get The Lax Scoop
04/17/24 • 32 min
In this third and final installment of our discussion with two DIII Coaches of the Year, Steve Koudelka of Lynchburg and Brandon Childs of York, we round out our interview series with several intriguing questions.
We start off hearing what exactly these two highly successful coaches look for when they are recruiting student-athletes for their programs. They review what skills, levels of athleticism, and intangibles they are looking for year in and year out.
Coach Childs discusses how he was fortunate to have a PLL All Star, Paul Drenner, on his staff for three years at York. What impressed him the most was how Drenner's teaching style was primarily focused on sound fundamentals and some other elements you'll want to learn about in this podcast.
After some prodding from co-host Ron Dalgleish-the Big Dawg, the coaches discuss the benefits of DIII lacrosse. The smaller school, the stadium right on campus, the exciting atmosphere. Letting players play in a more relaxed, free flowing environment and many more mentioned inside the interview. All this along with another round of our rapid fire recruiting questions. Yet again, another episode you will not want to miss.!

Outside of USA Lacrosse CEO, Marc Riccio, over our twenty eight episodes, we have interviewed coaches almost exclusively. But this time around we’re switching gears and interviewing two exceptional players from the collegiate and professional ranks: Dylan Molloy and Larken Kemp!
Molly, who plays in the PLL for the Atlas Lacrosse Club, was the 2016 Tewaaraton winner, leading Division 1 lacrosse in points and assists and was second in goals (with sixty- two) to his Brown teammate Kylor Bellistri who beat him by one goal with sixty three.
Kemp, who played for the Redwoods LC of the PLL, holds the record for most caused turnovers in a D1 men’s lacrosse game with eight, tied with three other players. He also holds the record for most points, goals, assists, and caused turnovers by a long pole in Brown Men’s Lacrosse history.
Both players were three time All Americans at Brown and leaders of the 2016 Brown Men’s Lacrosse that went to the Final Four. The team played in an exciting and memorable semi-final matchup versus the University of Maryland. The Bears came back, tying the score in thrilling fashion to force overtime before falling to the Terrapins in sudden death 14-13.
In this second installment of our three-part interview series we hear of Molloy & Kemp’s recruiting experience, their triumphs and some tribulations, their exciting high school careers, and what their playing days at Brown and their relationship was like. They also share some salient information for young players today. This is an interview you won’t want to miss!

Our first guest, Steve Koudelka, established the Lynchburg men's lacrosse program as a national powerhouse in his nearly three decades on the Hornets’ sidelines. Since his arrival prior to the 1997 season, he has recorded an overall record of 337-145, including 24 winning seasons. Lynchburg has advanced to the NCAA tournament 16 times with our guest at the helm and he has hoisted the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship trophy nine times. He was named the USILA Division III Coach of the Year in 2015. Coach K. played his college lacrosse at Gettysburg where he was a 2X All American goalie. He went on to become an assistant at his alma mater before taking the head coaching job at Lynchburg.
Our next guest, Brandon Childs, became only the fourth head men’s lacrosse coach at York College. In 12 years at York, he’s led the Green and White to a record of 176-51 and a .796 win percentage. The Spartans have advanced to the NCAA Tournament 8 times, including the school’s first trip to the “Final Four” in 2022. And with our next guest as their field general, York has advanced all the way to the National Quarterfinals four out of the last six years. He has been named the CAC / MAC Coach of the Year six times and in 2018 he was honored as The Division III Coach of The Year.
Brandon Childs was a 2X USILA All-American attackman at Lynchburg while he was also a Scholar All-American as a senior.
In this first installment of our interview series, Steve talks about his relationship with his mentor, Hank Janczyk, who was the head coach at Gettysburg for over forty years. Koudelka is also thankful for the strong and positive influence of Fred Opie, a Team USA defenseman and Syracuse All American, who was the defensive coordinator at Gettysburg.
Coach Childs discusses his early days in lacrosse, making the case for what he calls playing on the best U13 team of all time while growing up in Baltimore county. Listen in and see how your team stacks up against his roster! He also describes his playing days at St. Pauls and his warm first impressions of Coach Koudelka and his staff at Lynchburg.
Steve rounds out the segment describing a classic for the ages, “Top Star” summer camp where, as a young coach, he was able to learn from and interact with legends of the game such as Jim Berkeman, Dave Urick, and Sid Jamieson. This is an interview rich with history and the great camaraderie that’
