GITM 118: The 'Forgotten' Anime of 2022 | An Analysis
Get In The Mecha
07/10/23 • 39 min
Get In The Mecha is officially back! In this episode I'm catching up on some of the analysis that I missed by talking about some of the sleeper hits of 2022 that I think are worth going back to. How does Tatami Time Machine Blues differ from The Tatami Galaxy? How does The Girl From The Other Side configure into the current anime landscape? What can music videos teach us about storytelling? All this and more in this episode.
Thanks so much for your patience over the first half of this year (and before that) - I'm graduating this month which means I finally have the time to produce the podcast consistently again. I can't wait to share all of my thoughts on a regular basis like before!

GITM 52: Fire Force | An Animation Analysis
Get In The Mecha
07/10/20 • 43 min
Fire Force (2019) (Enen no Shouboutai), even prior to it's release, was an anime that I was excited for, primarily because I saw a lot of potential in it's production values. Fast-forward to today, the second season of the anime is now airing with a strongly animated first season in the bag; I think that there is no better time to analyse the animation & techniques of various animators who participated in the first 24 episodes! In this episode I look at how the direction of Fire Force indirectly influences how it is animated, why the anime is much more than beautiful looking fight scenes and more. On the side, I discuss my experience with Mamoru Hosoda's film, One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (2005).
Animators mentioned: Kazuhiro Miwa, Hiroyuki Ookaji, Yuki Sato, Nozomo Abe, Taiki Konno, Yasuyuki Kai, Riki Matsuura, Yuki Matsuo, Yasuto Hirohara, Yutaka Nakamura, Arifumi Imai, Norio Matsumoto, Hiroyuki Imaishi

Tsurune's Second Season was a blast and an improvement to its predecessor in almost every conceivable way. But what exactly is a sequel and what makes a Tsurune: Tsunagari no Issha a great one? In this episode I try to wrap my head around anime sequels in the context of the show and make some conclusions as to what they are.

SSSS.Dynazenon has been a wonderful experience and so I thought it would be worth taking the time to talk about my favourite moments from the series - the awkward & uncomfortable moments. In this week's episode, I talk about the funny, yet quite important 'Churro Scene' and then speak more widely about why these moments are so valuable for humanising the anime and much more.

GITM 50: The Bitter End (Neon Genesis Evangelion Analysis)
Get In The Mecha
06/26/20 • 43 min
Neon Genesis Evangelion is currently my favourite anime of all-time, partially due to the way that Anno is able to take apart his own story, reducing it to the fundamental question, ‘Who is Shinji Ikari?’ Although there are various other reasons for why I love the series, this is the main focus of ‘The Bitter End’, a name given to refer to the final episodes of the series. In this episode, I discuss how the arc portrays the absurdity of the world as well as the theme of liberation. I also try to think about whether value (plus everything else) is construct-able and what exactly ‘reality’ is, in the context of the anime.

GITM 2: Return of the Ghouls (Tokyo Ghoul:re Analysis & Review)
Get In The Mecha
08/22/19 • 25 min
Tokyo Ghoul:re was... an interesting one. With a questionable pace, tone and narrative, I left the show quite confused and unsure on how I felt about it. In today's episode, join me as I do a mini-dissection of what I thought were the 'goods' and 'bads' of the first season of the series. I will be going through what made it so different to its counterparts, why it was truly 'an interesting one' and if the show is worth your time (you can probably guess by now.)

GITM 1: A Demon Emerges (Blue Exorcist Analysis & Review)
Get In The Mecha
08/22/19 • 30 min
Ao No Exorcist is an anime that I have held dear to me for quite a while, so I thought this would be a great way to kick off the show! In this episode, I will be looking at how the anime had to fit into a very crowded market, how it conforms to the 'shounen model' or 'formula' and if it is still worth watching to this very day.

In the beginning... there was Rebirth! DC Universe: Rebirth #1 is what I like to label 'the book that started it all', in the sense that it allowed new narrative threads to emerge from it, while still embracing what was most important about the DC Universe prior to the New 52. In this episode, join me as I dive into how successfully did the graphic novel set up what came after it, who are the key players in this story and how impactful are they.
