Episode 026: Knife+Heart (2018)
Genre Exposure: A Film Podcast
02/02/22 • 109 min
In this episode, our #GialloJanuary celebration kicks into overtime as we spill into February to wrap everything up. We've checked out gialli in its heyday of the early 70s and followed it up with a look at its waning days in the late 80s. Circling our discussions has been this idea about modern interpretations of the genre and the concept of the neo-giallo. We finally bring that center stage by checking out Yann Gonzalez's Knife+Heart from 2018. Jason charts a lot of the loving influences the movie pays homage to. Dustin champions the story's weirder more surrealist elements. Michael dares to dub the film and its emotionally charged plot elevated giallo. But before all that, Dustin hops on the soapbox and delivers some blazing hot takes about the new Scream and the era of the rebootquel. And so much more!

In this episode, our #GialloJanuary celebration continues. Leaving behind the explosion of the genre in the early 70s, we advance into the late 80s to check out how things have evolved by focusing on Lamberto Bava's rather steamy erotic giallo Delirium (aka Le Foto di Gioia). Jason comes out swinging in support of the film. Dustin draws some comical parallels between giallo and soap operas as evident in the movie. Michael notes some interesting throughlines with our prior film. We also spend some time celebrating just how awesome George Eastman is. And so much more!

Episode 024: Death Walks at Midnight (1972)
Genre Exposure: A Film Podcast
01/05/22 • 79 min
In this episode, we kick off 2022 and our first theme block of the year by returning to one of our favorite genres to celebrate #GialloJanuary. We start off by leaving the beaten path of the most popular gialli directors to check out Luciano Ercoli's Death Walks at Midnight. Michael finds himself lost in the labyrinthine twists and turns of the film's many red herrings. Dustin becomes enamored with Nieves Navarro. Jason ponders the film's low kill count and other elements that might hold this one back from perfection. But before all that, we briefly revisit our genre breakdown on giallo from our episode on The Fifth Cord and drop some hot takes on the recent trend of newer films being categorized in this subgenre; perhaps unwarrantedly. And so much more!

Genre Exposure: A Film Podcast
12/31/21 • 62 min
In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, we usher 2021 to a close with a final look back over the year. First, we reflect a bit on launching the podcast itself and go over some of the things we learned and struggled with during the year as well as highlight some of our favorite moments and share just a few regrets. After that, we leave the best of 2021 top 10 lists to the experts and instead go over some of our favorite film discoveries we made this year. That is, specifically, any movie that we watched this year for the first time regardless of its release date. Finally, we wrap up by laying down some plans and wishes for the new year.
As our intro suggests, this podcast is really more about the journey than the destination. To everyone that has tuned in, left a comment, or even reached out with feedback thank you so much. We really appreciate it and it means the world to us. Here's to 2022 and another year of exploring (and celebrating) the wide world of cinema.

Episode 023: Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021)
Genre Exposure: A Film Podcast
12/22/21 • 94 min
In this episode, we wrap up the year with a post-apocalyptic blast by checking out the latest feature from acclaimed Japanese director Sion Sono: Prisoners of the Ghostland. Dustin opens the floodgate and bleeds his heart out with love and admiration for the works of Sono. Jason finds himself less than enthused and questioning a lot of the decisions that may have been made during production. Michael, unsurprisingly, gets lost in the plot but manages to steer around enough to level some criticism on the action choreography. We also tackle the film's own marketing stunt and ponder what is the wildest movie Nicholas Cage has made. And so much more!

In this episode, we get into the spirit of the season with Tom Shankland's The Children from 2008. That means a bit of snowbound horror, insufferable family drama, and plenty of killer kids to go around. Jason is forced to reckon with the realization that his Christmas-related pick actually has more to do with New Year's. Michael comes to terms with hating every character in a story. Meanwhile, Dustin struggles to find nice things to say about the film. We also spend a bit of time running down some of our favorites in the killer kids subgenre. And so much more!

In this episode, we welcome the wintery season and dive into Jeremy Saulnier's most recent film Hold the Dark from 2018. It's another heavy movie with quite a lot to discuss and dig in on. Michael breaks out the whiteboard to chart some of his own personal theories and interpretations of the plot. Jason questions one of the elements made significantly more vague in the translation from book to film. Dustin self-reflects about his hangups with Netflix Originals. As big fans, we also spend a bit of time celebrating the general filmography of Saulnier as well. And so much more!

Episode 020: Occult (2009)

11/10/21 • 106 min
In this episode, we dig back into our archive of listener submitted films and have selected one that marks a return to many of our favorite themes on the podcast. We're back to Japanese cinema and back on the Found Footage train to check out Koji Shiraishi's Occult from 2009 which surprisingly traces us back to some concepts from earlier episodes throughout the year. Jason levels some pointed criticism on the film's flaws, Dustin geeks out over Shiraishi and his filmography, and Michael finds himself struggling with the darker themes tied up in the narrative. But before all that, we have some parting thoughts on October and try to settle the debate on how to pronounce Ouija. And so much more!
You too can get in touch and suggest a film for our listener episodes. We want to cover it all. Episode 027: The Beast of War (1988)
Genre Exposure: A Film Podcast
02/16/22 • 101 min
In this episode, we put away the black gloves and cool down from our #GialloJanuary insanity with a listener suggested episode. From the dark streets of the world of Giallo, we carry on to the field of war to check out Kevin Reynolds' The Beast of War (aka The Beast) from 1988. This is an incredibly special film that was criminally buried during its release. We dig in not only on the film itself but also the crazy story of its production and unfortunate fall to obscurity that is an interesting tale in its own right. Special thanks to Nick for suggesting we check this one out and giving up some links to set us off on our research. And so much more!
