Chris rides solo for the first time ever as our good buddy Rob is ensuring the WooSox Ballpark is all set for Opening Day next week. If you have a moment, send him a message and let him know you are thinking of him with all the stress he is dealing with for the THIRD time. Chris speaks directly to the upcoming graduating class and congratulates them on their amazing accomplishment and reminds them to stay on course to land their dream role. Too many people succumb to the pressure from friends, professors, or parents to take the first role offered to them to appease others. Trust you gut, take your time, and let the good come to you. You've invested 22 years of your life to get to this point, don't start down the wrong path because someone has told you "this is the right way." Plus we are going to begin having volunteers join us to discuss their journey and share what obstacles they have encountered along the process thanks to a great suggestion from Sam Marteka. Chris also goes behind the scenes and provides the anatomy on a sponsorship deal that he was able to land today after TWO years of initial outreach.

Happy National Women and Girls in Sports Day! We start out with a huge shout out to all the women in our industry who do great work and are paving the way for future women. This leads us down a path of rehashing the 1996 USA Gymnastics team which uncovers another fun fact about Rob. He was a High School classmate with one of Chris's huge crushes, Dominique Moceanu, the star of the team. 14 year old Chris is super jealous! Big news out of EA Sports as they announce the return of NCAA football to their portfolio. This all ties back to the new rules around NCAA Athletes having the ability to monetize their likeness. Rob also nails the amount of money EA pays for Madden rights. Chris started watching the Tiger Woods doc on HBO which provides insight into the rise and fall of the planet's biggest sports star. Rob and Chris are blown away by Lionel Messi's contract... Almost $700M! Rob throws Chris for another loop when he shows him the pants he currently has on during the recording... ZUBAZ pants. Only Rob!

Chris and Rob wrap up 2020 with some positive perspective on everything that Front Office Features and the sports industry accomplished in our most challenging year ever. From Rob's staff becoming waiters and turning their Ballpark into a restaurant to the leagues entering a bubble and coming out with a Champion... It was a hell of a year from our resilient industry. We also dive into our Monday informational interviews and how impressed we were with the majority of the participants. Rob shares a great story on how an applicant for the WooSox job used a T-Chart to get himself into the YES pile. Be bold. Be different! A Happy Festivus to all of you out there and THANK YOU for being such great listeners. We can't wait to continue this journey with all of you in the New Year.

Rob and Chris delve into an alternate reality and banter on what they would do if they won the current Mega Millions jackpot of $975M. Rob would be "cheap" and rent houses instead of buying them while Chris would hire a driver to ensure he never sits behind a wheel again. Rob gives an update on the WooSox job search and how people separated themselves to make it onto Round 2. Chris gives details on the two new FSM roles that were posted that will focus on helping expand FSG's portfolio. Chris takes us behind the scenes of the NCAA sports business model from his previous time working on behalf of Boston College. All the inner workings on the financials, approval process, and sometimes red tape. Chris shares his disdain for IG Live but is thankful that Alina made them do it.

Robbbbbb! Another Crain Bomb dropped on Chris towards the end of this week's episode. An opinion so wrong you have to hear it to believe it. Chris is dealing with an E.Coli water outbreak in his town which might as well be Armageddon in a grocery store. Rob shares his experience while going under the knife to ensure no more baby Crain's are making an appearance. Somehow it was tied back to Alabama. Another must hear Rob story. Chris then takes us into a deep dive on the sports betting landscape and a true behind the scenes peak on the industry. We discuss the types of roles, their internal processes, and why DraftKings and FanDuel had such a head start on the competition. A must listen to educate yourself on how best to approach these companies and sound intelligent while doing so. Rob also likes a TV show.... surprisingly not one anyone else has ever seen. The Pandemic Burnout is Real

Front Office Features

play

01/28/21 • 50 min

Chris is having a rough week and shares his experience with "Pandemic Burnout." The little things at work that have been setting him off causing him to feel stress are outside his norm. The main takeaway is it's OK to not be OK but make sure you tell someone about it. Rob received a great email from a WooSox potential employee that people need to hear about. Looking to separate yourself from the pack? This is the way to do it. Chris and Rob agree that Craps is the best casino game out there because you all win or lose together. This leads into a GameStop conversation on how the stock is through the roof and manipulated by Reddit. This leads to another hot commodity going right now... Baseball Cards. Dust off your old cards because they may be worth a fortune on eBay. If you can't land your dream sports job you can always make money on the internet!

Happy belated birthday to our beloved host, Rob Crain! We've got an episode that runs the gamut this week. Chris recaps his intergalactic out of body experience while viewing a meteor shower this past weekend at Cape Cod. We also learned about his potential unhealthy infatuation with space that is aided possibly by extra curricular activities. Rob begins by digging a hole with his wife Amy around his hot takes on Wedding Anniversaries. In sports related content, Rob recaps the happenings around his job posting with the WooSox. With having already received over 100 candidates, Chris and Rob discuss the proper way to go about getting your name to the top of the list. One key point Rob touches on is the former interns who have reached out about the position. He was able to immediately separate the good from the bad stressing how important an internship performance can be. Rob highlights the candidate pool and how much experience some of the people have showcasing how important it is TO DO SOMETHING! Chris gets philosophical and gives Rob a pop quiz on post pandemic life. Rob once again showed off his pipes with a rendition of Semisonic's "Closing Time".

The train keeps rolling with SDSU Sports MBA alumni as Lauren Rojo, newly crowned World Series Champion of the LA Dodgers, joins Rob and Chris to discuss launching her sports career. We tackle the misconceptions she and many people have before accepting a ticket sales role and how those views changed as she performed her job. This is a GREAT peak behind the curtain on what life in a ticket sales role is truly like at a large sports team. Lauren provides insights on how she utilized her skill set to get promoted and take on more responsibility in a new role that focuses on Events. Lauren also dives into what helped shape her decision to pursue her Sports MBA from SDSU and how that experience helped guide her post graduation. Lauren goes into detail how personality aligns well the sports industry with the constant on the go responsibilities that are accompanied in our world. We again touch on the importance of data and how having a keen understanding of the inner workings of an organization are paramount in your success.

We preach the 2 main things you can control are effort and attitude. This interview is a perfect summation of how excuses are just that... excuses. Jake Olson lost his eyesight at a young age but did not let that deter him from chasing his and fulfilling his dream of playing football at USC. Jake preserved through the adversity of going blind to perfect his craft and actually take the field for the Trojans. You may have seen his story on ESPN but what you don't know is how he and his College roommate and friends turned this all into a thriving sports business. We are joined by the CEO, President, and COO of Engage, an online booking engine for companies to secure athletes and celebrities to appear or speak at their events. Engage all started in their college dorm after seeing the amount of requests come in for Jake to speak. We constantly talk about "do something" and these three have taken it to the next level. A must listen for numerous reasons but mostly for anyone feeling the effects of being stuck and using this as motivation to find your path.
