Friendshipable - 114: Friendship and leaders, with Jennifer Wilson
play

03/15/24 • 31 min

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff about the unique challenges of friendship for women in leadership roles, with leadership coach Jennifer Wilson.

And we discussed the joys of having work friends, and the boundaries one must create to maintain those two roles. We also talked about how work friendships are also generational--older workers may not consider friendships appropriate in the workplace, while many younger employees have specific expectations for finding friends in the workplace.

Jennifer Wilson is a leadership coach, writer and speaker. She recently stepped back from a 17-year career in her family’s business, The Canada Homestay Network (CHN) and now chairs their Board of Directors. Jennifer has worked as a registered midwife, is a certified Kolbe Consultant, and is trained in Crisis Intervention and compassion fatigue. She also holds an Associate Certified Coach credential with the International Coaching Federation.

The Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer and Friendships. We can all get outside more, it's warm, it's daylight into the evening and, whether we meet for a meal or a walk in our favorite neighborhood or nearby pond, lake or ocean, it can be a time to connect and visit with a friend or two.

Friendshipable - 34: Myths of modern friendship
play

03/25/22 • 25 min

From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about friendships in our current times.
There is a fear that friendships have changed, thanks to social media and our always-on culture. Is that really true? With Facebook choosing the word "friend" to mean our connections on the site, does that diminish the value of the word? Does online interaction with a friend have any impact on our relationship in real life?
There have been fears about technology impacting our relationships all through recorded history, including fear in the early 20th century that landline telephones were going to ruin social interaction.
We also discuss the Dunbar number and what are the limits on the number of friends we can have.
Resources we discuss:
The myths and reality of modern friendship, by Rebecca Roache
Why the Digital Age Is Not Destroying Friendship, by Lydia Denworth, author of Friendship

Friendshipable - 32: Friendship is the cure
play

03/11/22 • 21 min

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya talk about how friends can be the antidote to loneliness.
Humans are social animals, and that collaboration has enabled us to survive as a species. Loneliness "is an aversive state that has evolved as a signal to change behavior, very much like hunger, thirst, or physical pain, to motivate us to renew the connections we need to survive and prosper."
We all feel lonely at times. Profound loneliness is an issue that hides in plain site--we don't necessarily see it as a threat. Yet it can be as big as risk factor to premature death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Feeling disconnected from people puts us on alert to change that situation and look for meaningful engagement. Reaching out to others and building friendships can be the cure for loneliness.

Friendshipable - 28: Bye bye loneliness: the role of friendship
play

02/11/22 • 22 min

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff about loneliness and how having friends helps combat it.
We thrive when we are connected. And social connections are the key to happiness and health. "Loneliness can have long-term effects on health and is as lethal as smoking 15 cigarettes a day."

How to build a more connected life:

  • Get to know yourself, connect with yourself and your own instincts
  • Have/cultivate self-compassion. This can soften the blow of judgement and ridicule from people who don’t understand us

Obstacles to building friendships can raise the risk of loneliness. People skilled at friendship may have a natural defense against prolonged or severe loneliness. Those who are not yet as skilled can develop the habits and behaviors that support friendships.

Books and articles and resources we discuss:
Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World, by Vivek Murthy
Goodbye loneliness, Hello happiness - a prescription for healthier lives, in The Boston Globe
The Unlonely Project, The Foundation for Art & Healing
Emerging Together: The Tackling Loneliness Network Action Plan, UK government

Friendshipable - 41: How many friends can I really have?
play

05/13/22 • 24 min

From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about the so-called Dunbar number--that describes the numerical limits on how many connections an individual can have.
The conversation centers around Robin Dunbar, Emeritus Professor of Evolutionary Psychology at Oxford University. Based on his research, he believes the size of the neocortex in our brains is linked to the size of a cohesive social group--that ratio limits the complexity of the social systems we can handle.
According to his theory:

  • 5 loved ones
  • 15 good friends
  • 50 friends
  • 150 meaningful contacts
  • 500 acquaintances
  • 1,500 people you can recognize
