The effects of Covid19 have been far-reaching and unexpected. With the sudden stop of international tourism to Africa, vast wilderness areas that would normally have a reliable presence of tourists and workers, have been left vacant. This vacancy, and its negative economic consequences, have left these areas vulnerable to wildlife crime. There are fears that poaching will become a pandemic of its own. Today's guest, Anna Rathmann, is the Director of the Great Plains Foundation and talks to us about their new endeavor, Project Ranger. Through it, they are helping to fund front-line conservation personnel who are protecting these important and fragile ecosystems.

Ep13: Making Lion Conservation About People with Resson Kantai Duff
Send Crystal a text letting her know what you thought about the show!
Did you know that at their current rate of decline, lions can become extinct in our lifetime?! With many of them living outside of protected areas, conservation solutions have to involve the people they live among. Today's guest is Resson Kantai Duff, the Deputy Director of Ewaso Lions based in Northern Kenya. The mission of Ewaso Lions is to conserve lions and other large carnivores by promoting coexistence between people and wildlife. They do this by involving individuals who, traditionally, have had very little say in conservation decision-making in the past- Samburu Warriors, women, and children. We have a great discussion about their projects, how to get included in governmental decision-making, and the importance of inclusion.
For ideas on how YOU can help to protect lions from wherever you are (and even the large carnivores in your backyard), check out this week's show notes at the Forces for Nature website.

Ep15: Working to Avert Another Covid19 with Onkuri Majumdar
Send Crystal a text letting her know what you thought about the show!
It is suspected that a wildlife market in China was ground zero for the Covid19 outbreak, but why? How did that happen? How has it happened in the past and why will it inevitably happen again unless we make some important changes? I talk about all of this with today's guest, Onkuri Majumdar of the organization Freeland. She has been working to strengthen the capacity of governments, law officials, and companies to recognize illegal wildlife trafficking and to bring culprits to justice in such a way that actually dismantles the whole illegal network. Onkuri, along with a myriad of other partners that work alongside Freeland, works tirelessly to make sure that a disease like Covid19 is not able to again bring the world to its knees.
You may not realize it, but you are witness to the illegal wildlife trade way more often than you think, which means there's actually a lot you can do to put an end to it. Want to know how? Check out this episode's show notes at www.forcesfornature.com!
