Finding Weird - Episode 15 - Fire-Spin to Win!
play

11/22/21 • 49 min

Show Notes:
Welcome back for Episode 15! Today, we are going to be talking about hula hooping, fire-spinning, and other flow arts. We talk with Courtney Bussard of the Journey to Limitless podcast about how she decided to take up the hoops, light them on fire, and find both fitness and fun in the flames. She recently received her certification for life coaching and now helps others find their joy and purpose in life and business.
Next week, we will be sitting down with Tom Morris of the Laust Saucecast – software developer, scuba diver, professional wrestler, sauce company owner (Laust Sauce), pilot, circus ringleader and performer, keyboardist... umm, there are like 14 other things I am probably forgetting, but let’s just say this guy has definite weird street cred. We talk about most of the things I mentioned, with a focus on professional wrestling, while I pander to him for free sauce.

Finding Weird - Episode 17 - Me and YouTube
play

12/05/21 • 66 min

Show Notes:
Welcome back for Episode 17! Today, we are going to be talking about starting your own YouTube channel as I sit down with Nathan Lockhart of the LockisLive Youtube channel and Expanded Thoughts Podcast. As I mentioned in last week’s teaser, he is literally half of my age, but has been working with YouTube for the last 7 years! He is a well of online media knowledge and a very impressive content creator. I’d say take a drink every time I mention his follower numbers, but I want you to be able to remember today and stay safe.
Next week, we will be sitting down with author N.Daniel while we talk about his new book, Burn This City to the Ground. As he describes it, an “endearing platonic love story is the gooey center of a turbulent world set aflame. Through the laughter and the tears, Samantha and Daniel play off each other like a tragic comedy duo that's hell bent on finding humor within the most savage aspects of their everyday lives.” It chronicles the continued recovery from his own mental health journey in the backdrop of living in Minneapolis during the riots, and we talk about how online roleplaying games helped him, myself, and many others begin making connections again in recovery from trauma.

play

01/03/22 • 70 min

Show Notes:
Welcome back for Episode 20! Today, we will be sitting down with plant-based nutrition coach and host of the Win the Food Fight podcast, Michelle Vilseck, as we talk about nutrition for physical and mental health, how you may have been lied to your entire life about food, and how eating more vegetables can give you superpowers... ok, maybe not superpowers, but at least uncanny abilities to heal yourself.
Next weeks topic is to be determined so keep a weathered eye on the horizon of our Instagram and Twitter for the announcement!

01/10/22 • 31 min

Show Notes:
Welcome back for Episode 21! Today, I want to talk a little bit about thinking errors or cognitive distortions and the impact they can have on our day-to-day experience of the world. I took a list from the internet of 16 common thinking errors and we’ll explore what they entail. I will bet that you will recognize some of the common barriers to a more positive mindset. Stay tuned... this might be my version of Pokémon as I catch them all!
Next week, we will be sitting down with the Queen of the Twin Cities herself Lala Luzious as we talk about dressing and performing drag, her new book of poetry, and how getting outside of yourself can be very liberating and great for your mental health.

Finding Weird - Episode 24 - Voice Act Your Age!
play

02/01/22 • 95 min

Show Notes:
Welcome back for Episode 24! Today, I want to share with you my interview with co-creator Chris Burnside and voice talent Stephen Gogol, and Jordan Lopez from Dayton Writer’s Movement’s The Hidden People audio drama. I have to be honest that this interview almost brought me to tears because there is nothing more fun than sitting around with a bunch of hilarious, creative people. This interview is, as always, included in its entirety and we let the clock run on entertainment. It is a long one and I won’t fault anyone for taking this one in chunks, but if you need to smile, this is the one. Stick around after the interview for some Dad Jokes of the Week. If your podcast player can see chapters, I’ll put some markers in so that you can navigate around the longer episode. Enjoy!

For next week, I am going to talk a little about self-love, no not that kind, and gratitude. Two things that can help us reframe out thoughts and give us a mood boost that may be the kick in the pants we need to get finding our new destiny! If you have some thoughts about this, email, tweet, or come to the website at www.findingweird.com and click on the microphone in the bottom right corner to leave me a voicemail message! I may even feature your audio in the next episode!

Finding Weird - Episode 25 - Practicing Gratitude
play

02/14/22 • 10 min

Show Notes:
Welcome back for Episode 25! Today, I want to talk about how to practice being grateful and how this can help turn a troubled mind toward a more positive light. We often get bogged down in the day-to-day stress without taking time or inventory of the things that may be going our way. To play on a line from the Paw Patrol – “No stress is too big, and no gratefulness too small.” We’ll discuss a couple of techniques that you can try in just a few minutes a day that can train your brain to find the rainbows in the rain.
**Dad Jokes, of course, are included.**

Finding Weird - Episode 23 - Jump into Skydiving
play

01/24/22 • 72 min

Show Notes:
Welcome back for Episode 23! Today, I want to share with you my interview with Dr. Kevin Payne, social psychologist, data scientist, author, teacher, and skydiver who took charge of his own happiness after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He decided to get back to a hobby that brought him joy and now has over 600 jumps in 3 years. He is an extremely knowledgeable person and very down to earth... ha!

For next week, I was able to achieve some firsts for the podcast. We have our first multi-paneled interview as I sit down with co-creator Chris Burnside and voice talent Stephen Gogol, and Jordan Lopez from Dayton Writer’s Movement’s The Hidden People audio drama. I listen to their show regularly and was super excited to sit down with them. I’ll admit that it is going to be a long one because that’s what happens when you get theatre people and writers into a space and let the jokes fly. If you need shenanigans in your life to cheer you up, make sure to visit again next week!

Finding Weird - Episode 1 - Aaaand How!
play

07/30/21 • 13 min

Show Notes:

In this episode we talk about the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of this podcast adventure. I give a little background about me and my hopes for the podcast and what you can expect if you join me on this exploration of what happens when we take a look at mental health/self care and the intersection of being weird.

Next week we will take a look at "What's in a Name?" - The role identity plays in our mental health and self-care and how our own personal values and perspectives can help us overcome our fears and doubts and take a walk on the weird side.

If you've liked what you've heard so far, please tell a friend or someone you know who would benefit from hearing about mental health, self-acceptance, and being weird!
