5-Minute Focus: Joyful Expectation
Finding Focus with Kathleen Davenport
05/14/24 • 5 min
A few weeks ago I shared a story about a fellow golfer who always looked at her shots in a positive light. No matter where she hit it whether it was behind a tree, in a bunker or actually in the fairway, she always said, “That’s a good shot!” And she went on to make the next shot a great shot.
So the other day I golfed with a few friends. Among them is Dan who is a fighter pilot, a general, and just a great fun guy to play with. What was so fun about Dan is that whenever he was making a putt and the ball was rolling to the hole—whether it was on target or not—Dan would yell, “There it is!” He did this seven or eight times in a row and I think he only actually sunk one of them on the first try. But it was his joyful expectation of sinking that 5 foot or 10 foot or 20-foot putt that was so great. It didn’t matter if the ball actually fell into the hole or not—it was the expectation that it was going in that kept us all laughing and actually hoping the ball would go in. We were all upbeat, the mood was light and we had a great day of golf. I actually had my lowest round ever that day.
Joyful expectation is something I think we should all practice more of. It’s so easy after a little setback to let disappointment settle in, when instead the better thing to do is focus forward and anticipate a great outcome.
Listen in as I talk more about the power of joyful expectation and how you can use this to overcome overthinking and negative thoughts--and learn to expect the best!

5 Minute Focus: I Was Looking For Sympathy....Instead I Got Challenged
Finding Focus with Kathleen Davenport
02/22/24 • 3 min
I was complaining to a golf coach about how hard a particular course was. In fact, I would be happy to never play it again. There were trees that got in the way, water that took my ball, tight fairways, and sand traps that were just no fun at all.
I suppose I was looking to get some sympathy from him. Instead, he responded by saying, "That's a great course, I love it! It's one of my top 3! You have to go back and play it again. I looked at him as if he was crazy....
Tune in to hear how I didn't get any sympathy but instead got a challenge. And learn how you can learn to look at things from a different perspective.

5-Minute Focus: It's Okay To Make Yourself A Priority
Finding Focus with Kathleen Davenport
11/29/23 • 6 min
I recently asked listeners what they’d like me to talk about and this was one of the many responses I received:
The listener wrote:
"My issue is learning that it is okay to make myself the priority at times.
Example:
I can’t spend $5.00 on myself but won’t hesitate to spend $100.00 on my family or friends.
Or I don’t make time for myself to do the things I want to do, but will drop everything to help or do what another person wants to do.
And so on ......
I am afraid I will be like this until the day I die."
This is a great discussion topic as I know many of us can relate.
So why do we find it so hard to make ourselves a priority?? And what can be done about it?
I hope you'll listen in to today's 5-Minute Focus podcast and learn some quick tips about making yourself a priority and knowing it's absolutely okay--and necessary--to do so!

5-Minute Focus: Kosta and Penelope
Finding Focus with Kathleen Davenport
05/08/24 • 4 min
Things are never quite what they appear... sometimes you have to adjust your focus!
When I visited Florida a few months ago, I hired a taxi to take me to the airport for my return flight. A big black van pulled up to gather me and my luggage. The driver stepped out and I stepped back. He was this big, imposing-looking man, wearing all black and looking like he could be somebody's bodyguard--or a hit man.
I nervously got into the van (the service had been recommended by the hotel concierge, so I figured it had to be legit), and imagined what would be a nervous and quiet 30-minute ride to the airport.
As I got settled in my seat behind the driver, all of a sudden this little furry face turned to look at me from the front passenger seat. I couldn't help but smile and I asked the driver, "Who's this???"
He said, "That's Penelope. She's my co-pilot. And my icebreaker."
He went on to say that he knows he looks intimidating, so he brings his little Yorkshire terrier along while he drives.
Listen in as I tell the story of meeting Kosta and Penelope, how they were a bright spot in my day, and how I learned that sometimes you have to adjust your focus.

5-Minute Focus: Your Right Tribe...Will Bring You More Than Oreos and Jack Daniels
Finding Focus with Kathleen Davenport
04/26/24 • 6 min
A few years ago I decided to try my hand at dating. It’d been a few years since my husband had passed and I figured I’d give online dating a try. (I may do a whole separate podcast about online dating—that is definitely not for the feint of heart!)
Anyway, I had gone out with a guy, we’d hit it off great and dated for about a month. Things were going great, or so I thought. But then one morning I woke up to what was basically a “Dear Jane” email. An email breaking it off. Not even a phone call, just a cold, impersonal email.
Anyway, I got into a funk, I wondered what I’d done wrong. To this day I still don’t know what happened, but my self-esteem was shattered. I called one of my neighbor ladies, explained what had happened and said I was feeling very down and dejected.
Within 15 minutes there was a knock at my door and there stood four of my dear neighbor ladies--my tribe. It was as if they’d put out an emergency alert, gathered some supplies and headed over to my house. As they came in, I could see they had brought a good assortment of comfort items: Wine and cheese, Oreo cookies, chocolates from Japan, some BBQ chips, popcorn, and a bottle of Jack Daniels....
Listen in as I explain how my tribe held me up and held me together. And what you can do if you don't have a tribe yet.
I'm cheering for you!

5-Minute Focus: You'll Never Be Right for the Wrong Person--Three Keys to Finding New Focus
Finding Focus with Kathleen Davenport
05/23/24 • 5 min
No matter what age, no matter what stage of life you’re in, you need to remember this about people and relationships:
You’ll never be right for the wrong person.
I recently met a man whose girlfriend had just left him. He was agonizing over what he could’ve done differently and why he didn’t see the signs of any problems.
First of all, there’s probably nothing he could’ve done differently if she was already determined to leave the relationship. Her reasons were her reasons which may or may not have been as a result of his actions.
And why didn’t he see the signs? Well, it’s possible the signs were there, but he chose to ignore them. Or they were hidden very well. It could also be that the person he thought he was in love with, wasn’t really the person he thought she was. And oftentimes we’re more in love with the fantasy of what this person and relationship could bring to our lives-- than the actual reality. The dream becomes the lie that we choose to ignore. If you find yourself making excuses for and accepting a person’s behavior that’s actually unacceptable to you—then it’s time to reconsider the so-called relationship.
You’ll never be right for the wrong person. When things are out of alignment for you—the relationship will never be right. Unless you are both willing to make accommodations and have those crucial conversations to put things into alignment, things will always be out of balance. And when things are out of balance, the road is never smooth. And sometimes you’re just in the wrong relationship and it’s time to let go.
So what can you do to ease through the loss of a relationship and move forward? And to make sure that your next relationship is your best and last? Listen in and learn the three keys to finding focus and moving forward.
