Leah Jones 00:19
Hello and welcome to Finding Favorites. I'm your host, Leah Jones. I'm recording this on Saturday night, October 29, 2022. You're listening to it hopefully on Sunday, October 30, 2022. It is the big Halloween going out night in Chicago. And I had all the plans and preparations to hit the legendary Huffine Cooper Halloween party, which if you go back into my archives, I interviewed Cinnamon about how they host that party and everything that goes into it. And it's one of the best events of the year. And I have been getting stronger and stronger, and then today I pushed it too far. I went to Stretchlab in the morning, I went to a Meijer in the suburbs, I walked around the Meijer twice. I came back to the city. At some point, I went to third Coast comics to see my friend Terry, pick up a couple of books. And then I went to Target to get the last thing I needed for my costume. And as I was walking into the Target, I realized I didn't have my can with me, but that tonight was going to be a night where I wasn't going to be able to go up a flight up-stairs. And maybe not even after I found parking, walk to my friend's apartment. So sadly, I am at home editing a podcast. But I mean not sadly, I enjoy editing. I also interviewed Eden today. I'm talking to Eden Robbins about her debut novel, which is available called “When Franny Stands Up”. Cowboys give me scratches. I had some pizza for dinner, I'm drinking a huge water. So I'm just you know, I'm sad. Because I had wanted to go to this party for months and months really, since September 2020. When I was walking in my neighborhood and cross the street that my friends live on and I was like, “Oh no, there's not going to be a Halloween party this year”. So I'm sorry, I'm sorry, to the Huffine Cooper and to Veronica, for not being there tonight. And I know, I haven't done intros for a couple of episodes. Again, just trying to get back into the groove of editing®recording®editing®publishing. I love this podcast and the conversations that lets me have, but the work to get it out is not insignificant. And I started this podcast when I had 10 extra hours a week because I wasn't commuting and I'm commuting at least six hours a week. I'm going out and I'm seeing friends which is wonderful and I'm doing things other than sleep and go for chemotherapy. So I'm so grateful for how busy my life is. But also it eats into my time. What else is happening this week? I'm starting a whole new regimen of medicine. I'm starting Methotrexate which you've seen in the news because it's one of the drugs that women with arthritis couldn't get once Roe was overturned because you can't sustain a pregnancy when you're on Methotrexate, so I started that this week. I started Tamoxifen, which is as I understand it as estrogen pacman. Because my cancer was ER positive, I started daily folic acid, a weekly vitamin D. It just started a lot this we...

Hello, and welcome to Finding Favorites. I'm your host, Leah Jones. And this is the podcast where we learn about people's favorite things without using an algorithm. It's so good to be catching up with you. I was so thrilled when you send me your email. I'm like, How have I not had Liz on yet? You had a podcast before almost anyone I knew. And yeah, you I hadn't I didn't ask you to be on. That's on me.

Leah Jones 01:32
I'm so happy. So we were doing a little catching up before I hit record. And just reflecting a little bit we met in I think the summer of 2007 at a conference in Israel. Is that right? Is it like did you go in 2007?
Liz Nord 01:48
Did you know I think I was like the year after you. It might have been 2008. So it's been a while.
Leah Jones 01:57
And at the time, your documentary age, were you still working on Jericho’s Echo in 2008? Or was it just
Liz Nord 02:05
No it has been out in world, which I think is why I was invited to this conference with Jewish artists and Jewish innovators people creating Jewish things in the world. And my film Jericho’s Echo was not specifically Jewish, but it was about Israeli punk rockers. And so it fit the bill.
Leah Jones 02:27
Yeah. So we met then we see each other at conferences. We see each other at conferences, weddings, funeral when

Patty Morrissey love thrift stores AND decluttering
Finding Favorites with Leah Jones
11/22/21 • 60 min
Patty Morrissey, a New York-based coach and master Kon Mari consultant, loves to go thrifting on Long Island. She grew up thrifting and garage sale-ing with her grandparents and still goes to the same shops today. She's also a Kon Mari consulant and coach who knows a thing or two about how to help people find what sparks joy. (In fact, she's in my house helping me organize during the pandemic thaw).

Welcome to the Finding Favorites podcast where we explore your favorite things without using an algorithm. Here's your host, Leah Jones.
Leah Jones 0:29
Hello, and welcome to Finding Favorites. It's Sunday, November 21st. And then a hilarious, strange, wonderful world that I live in. I recorded this week's episode on Monday night with my dear friend, Patti Morrissey. In it, we joked about her coming to Chicago to help me organize. She texted me later and said, "What if I come on Saturday?" So Patty came to town yesterday, and has been helping me organize my house to get ready for the rest of chemo, getting my life set up, kind of a good reset as I head into the next 10 weeks of chemotherapy.
Leah Jones 1:06
It's been very funny this evening to step away from a friend to edit a conversation you had with that friend earlier in the week. Taking time out of precious in-person hours to do a digital task related to being with that same friend. So I will keep this introduction short, and let you enjoy Patti Morrissey and I talking about thrifting, and all the work that she does as both KonMari consultant and the owner of Clear and Cultivate, the Cultivate club, though there will be links to everything. She's based in New York, but the internet means she can be everywhere. And airplanes mean she can also be everywhere.
Leah Jones 1:53
I'm really grateful, again, to the support of my friends and my family this week, second week of chemotherapy. I got acupuncture, I slept for four hours, I came home and got a lot of energy from the steroids. So, I went to the car wash on Friday night, which is a normal thing to do after chemotherapy, I don't know. I still have my hair; I'm anticipating it coming out this week. So take care of yourselves, have a great Thanksgiving. If you got a 20 pound bird, take it out of the freezer. You got to start thawing now, if you're going to be able to cook it safely on Thursday. Wear your mask, wash your hands, and keep enjoying your favorite things.
Leah Jones 2:56
Hello, and welcome to Finding Favorites. I'm your host, Leah Jones. And this is the podcast where we learn about people's favorite things and we get recommendations without using an algorithm. I am joined tonight by my dear friend, Patti Morrissey. Patti is the founder and head coach of Clear and Cultivate. They facilitate fresh starts -- they have the Cultivate Club, declutter parties, training and coaching. I brag about Patty for a lot of things -- there's so many things. But I do appreciate the shine I get when I'm like, "Patti, she's Marie Kondo's go-to in the U.S." That's very fun to say. You're one of the very first certified Marie Kondo consultants in the United States and you have spoken -- there have been times when she hasn't been able to speak and they're like, "Patti, why don't you come to Hong Kong and give this presentation?" But, you do so much more than that, and I'm thrilled to have you here tonight. Patti, how are you doing?
Patty 4:03
I'm good. I'm good. I had a great Monday, reorganizing my basement, practicing what I preach, just hanging out. What was your Monday?

Why did you start this show?
I started Finding Favorites in part because I had so much free time during the early part of the COVID pandemic. I'd written a blog post exploring my journey as a podcast listener - how one led to the next, led to finding my favorite comedians, which lead to listening to even more. That's when I realized that the journey of finding your favorites is something anyone can talk about.
